View Full Version : Who do you think Mary should've married
pandora_spocks 01-29-2003, 12:32 AM I don't know if anyone has discussed this on this board or not, but it's dead and people need to post!
Who do you think Mary should have married or would've been a good match for her?
I think either Robert Brand (Mary's tax auditor) would've been good. Lou (don't go eww! ;)) would've also been a good candidate. I really liked Joe Warner and Dan Whitfield, but Joe cheated and Dan left her. I also liked Tom Vernon, but that episode was really self-explanitory. What do you think?

You know you've touched a nerve with me here, don't you? ;)
I agree with everything you've said here. I don't like either Joe or Dan, for the reasons you've stated. Robert Brand was just adorable, but I don't know if he could sweep Mary off her feet. If Mary weren't such a "height bigot" I could see her with Eric Matthews, though!
I know I could see Lou and Mary though! He was always so protective and caring when it came to her. They had a real friendship, and I think it could easily have evolved into something more.
Just my 2 cents.
Kristen
TVgen62 01-29-2003, 04:18 AM Please don't write this off as a cop-out just yet. I can't endorse any of Mary's dates as the next (first) "Mr. Mary Richards". ;) However, these came the closest (IMO):
Dan Whitfield -
I thought he was very charming (especially in his first appearance), handsome and intelligent. He had a subtle wit and seemed very self-assured.
Matt (I'm-sorry-but-I-forgot-his-last-name-but-he-was-the-architect-who-had-a-son-with-the-same-name-Come-on-you-know-who-I-mean!) - <Whew>
He deserves consideration because...<gasp> JUST LOOK AT HIM!! Bradford Dillman was hot! :eyes:
(Forget his scrawny son with the wire-brush hair. Yeech!)
Joe Warner -
How can you say "no" to Donald Hollister?!

I agree. Lou and Mary were so cute together. I always wanted to see a romance kindled between them. They seemed like they would make the perfect couple.

Actually, I do like Dan and Joe, but Kristen has gotten on me so much about how both of them did those things to her that I've decided just to go on her side. But yes, time and time again I've tried to tell her that even though Joe cheated he was still a great guy! I liked Dan in the first episode 'Room 223'. It's one of my favorites, but I didn't like the idea that he left. It just wasn't right. In MY personal opinion either Joe or Lou would've been terrific! And how about that kiss in 'Lou Dates Mary'? Too bad they started laughing. Would've been cool if they started laughing then paused looked deep into each others eyes and started to kiss again and fade to credits. What a wonderful ending that would've been! I know I'm such a romantic.

I will keep telling you about those two till you see the light! j/k!

As I've said before, I cannot agree more with this issue. I wouldn't have necessarily wanted to see them "do it", but I would have liked to see them as a couple. I love the scene in "Mary's Three Husbands" where they talk about consummating their marriage (In Lou's fantasy of course!)
I also agree with the point that TV Gen brought up, that there wasn't really one of Mary's dates that you could look at and go, "Yeah, he's the one! He's Mr. Right!" But I think some of them were better candidates than others.
Another 2 cents from me.

Who doesn't?
I really like the episode 'Not Just Another Pretty Face'. I know that Paul wasn't good for Mary or anything I just like it because it shows that even Mary can like somebody for their looks. Just proves that Mary Richards is human. Not trying to start a fight between the sexes or anything, but I also like Bess' little speech on how they use us and it's time we get them back. Right on, Bess!
Leigh Ann 01-29-2003, 06:52 PM I would say a good match for Mary would either be Lou or Joe.

Any particular reason why you picked Lou or Joe? :)

Hello, newsmongers! :D
I intended to comment on this earlier and, since a need for more content was mentioned, I'll commence with the, um, com-'ments.
Eric, IMO, was one of the most likeable (and normal) of Mary's dates. Unfortunately, as Eric himself noted, it "wasn't exactly magic".
Oh, I almost forgot to mention "the Dan thing"! :talk: (Let me know if I'm keeping anyone from beddy-bye.) :sleep2:
The Courtship of Mary's Father's Daughter:
Yes, he started to walk off because Mary wasn't as "really ready" to get married as he. Didn't they agree to continue dating anyway? Wasn't this just another relationship that ended without explanation to the viewers (just within the context of this episode)? Did I miss something?

Nope :)
I just liked them both the best out of all the guys that were on the show:)

Well, that's cool. We both like the same guys for Mary.
ClesStahn 05-22-2003, 02:12 PM Mary and Ted: Mary would've murdered him.
Mary and Lou: I don't think Lou and Mary could've been married. She was too Liberal, and he seems more Republican/Conservative.
Mary and the Tax Guy: Maybe.
Mary and the Critic: Again, the whole murder thing...
(I'm JK'ing about the murdering thing here, people, in case any of you feel offended, or whatever. In other words, I'm not being serious.)

In any of the making-of documentaries about the show, whenever Mary mentions that Ted Baxter was supposed to be a love interest for her, I always go "Eeeew!" lol!
About Robert C. Brand, yeah he was cute. But as I've said before, I don't think he could've "swept her off her feet." But he was probably one of the more normal guys she went out with!

That still would've been funny. Anyone remember that one scene in 'Mary's Three Husbands'?
Tonight, tonight, won't be just any night.
Tonight, there will be no morning star.
I think thats how it goes..oh wow I've lost a lot of memory.

Who do you think Mary should have married?
I don't know. I think if she did marry on the show that we would be seeing Laura Petrie all over again (from The Dick Van Dyke Show). I think it was smart of the writers to keep Mary's character single throughout the run of the show.
mstewart 06-29-2004, 11:44 PM I wish her and Joe Warner would had stayed together through the rest of the run and marry off in the series finale. I like Ted Bessell and MTM together. She looked good in her love scenes with Ted Bessell.
Petrie Malone 07-04-2004, 12:34 PM I think Dick Van Dyke should have guest starred on TMTMS (probably season 7) and his character and Mary could date and at the series finale they could have gotten engaged! It woulda been deja vu for the viewers!
Kurt
catlover79 03-07-2007, 04:01 PM Mary & Lou?? Hmm, some possibilities there, but I saw their relationship as more father/daughter.
I think Mary and Murray would have been kind of cute, if Marie wasn't in the picture. I think in his own way, Murray slobbered over Mary more than Howard Arnell!!
Scoobiedoo30 03-08-2007, 03:29 PM I see Mary Married to Murray
Kristen 03-08-2007, 10:27 PM I see Mary Married to Murray
It's hard to marry a guy who's already married. ;)

I kinda like that idea.:D

I so agree! ;)
But I never saw anything between Mary or Lou. Just me. I also saw a father/daughter relationship.

Yes, i agree completely, this is one of few shows that didnt end in a wedding , and, i think that was the proper way to go!
Mikado 12-05-2007, 12:18 AM Ironically, I saw MTM on some talk show once, and she said that, she personally, would have prefered to see her character and Lou get together...she said she felt the show had always been a kind of love story between them! (And yes, she also stated that originally, Mary and Ted were supposed to be attracted to each other...but, the writers nixed it, fortunately!)

You wouldn't happen to remember what show Mary said that on, would you? I'm curious b/c it's an interview I've never seen, and I'd love to see it.

Mikado 12-05-2007, 02:33 AM It was so long ago that I cant recall, but, if I had to make a guess, I'd say it was likely on Late Night with David Letterman (the NBC show), because thats the only talk show I ever watched with any regularity.
