I believe the episodes you're talking about were made at the beginning of the 1978-79 season. Lynda Goodfriend and Scott Baio were essentially "transferred" to another Garry Marshall series -- "Who's Watching the Kids" over on NBC. This is why you don't see much of Lori Beth or Chachi on "Happy Days" during that period. But the new show only lasted 13 episodes, and Baio and Goodfriend were back on HD pretty quickly. If the new show had caught on, I'm sure there would have been some references on HD about how Richie and Lori Beth broke up, or something like that.
