I hate it when I watch a show, and my favorite charater or actor/actress starts to smoke. It ruins it. When I found out Ted Danson and Shelley Long smoked I was mad. Why don't they quit? I know its hard but don't they want to be healthy? I have an uncle whos been smoking for 30 some years and he is 54. What do you guys think?

It bothers me when anyone smokes and when I find out that someone does, whether it be a celebrity or someone I know, I always have the same reaction. I just think, how could they do that? and try to forget about it, which is hard to do for me.

Doesn't bother me so much that an actress or actor smokes in real life. It'd be nice if they didn't and I've been disapponted when I find out that someone I'm fond of smokes. But what bothers me is when they smoke as a character in a movie when it doesn't have anything to do with the character. They get paid by the tobacco companies to smoke on screen. Some of them are beautiful or handsome and athletic and in great shape. It doesn't make sense that the character would smoke. They usually fit that in during some tense moment in order to justify it. That's baloney that a person who doesn't smoke would suddenly light up in a tense moment. I'd bet cigarettes to donuts that the writer didn't put that in his or her sceenplay. Those type of scenes are added after the negotiations. Yuck!

The sad thing is a lot of young actors and actresses smoke, especially actresses. It's a great way to surpress your appetite, if you know what I mean...

I hate people who smoke, and its so disappointing to see someone you look up to smoking. For me Dansons smoking habits were really upsetting, although recently hes said hes given up cigar smoking...its such a waste of money and like you've all said, a HUGE turn-off.

It really bothers me, too. The first time I watched What We Did That Night and I saw Rick Schroder smoke I was shocked. I never liked him as much as I used to after that. I don't understand why they have actors and actresses smoke onscreen. How can having tobacco breath make a person attractive? Putting a cigarette in their mouth just ruins their whole image of who they are as a person.

As a smoking-hater, yet the fan of an actor who used to smoke like 3 packs a day, it bothers me, but I guess on some shows I'm just used to it. I Love Lucy, Hogan's Heroes...

But nothing made me happier than when I learned Richard quit like 9 years ago. Now if everyone would quit...

it doesnt bother me at all- its the same as what i think of smoking in real life- as long as someone isnt going to hold it in my face, they can smoke all they want, its their choice.

i have a heart condiction and if i ever smoked, it would damage my heart. My dad smokes and i can't stand to be around him when he does it. I'll always be angry with him because i guess i wasn't enough to make him stop smoking. I dis-like smoking. I basically have to. I just think it is gross and i would never do it. I wish Actors and Actresses wouldnt do it-Lucille Ball is like my role model-but her smoking i dislike. I love Jennifer Aniston and she smokes. I still love her, but i still think thats wrong. People are only human though.

Yea, me too. I mean, I'll admit that I'm a lil disappointed that Ewan smokes, b/c he's hurting himself, but yea, it's their choice.

It doesn't really bother me all that much. My dad smokes so I guess I'm just used to people smoking, whether it be real life or on a tv/movie screen.

I think the one person on tv that I really like that smoked a lot was Rod Serling. He'd have a cig in his hand quite often while doing the TZ opening scenes. I was too busy saying, "God, I love hearing that man talk." to even notice which eps he smoked in. lol- yeah, I'm a dork. lol

Well, I chose 5 cause none of my celebs smoke. Of course Martina CANT smoke or shed ruin her voice. But when I see someone I have alot of respect for as an actor or singer smoking, it pisses me off some. I wish I could tell them that they look like a reject when they smoke.

Rick Schroder must've switched products. I remember awhile back hearing that he did skoal.

I heard over the years that many music stars are heavy smokers.
Kid Rock, Backsteet Boys ( I saw AJ McClean a few years back on MuchMusic puffing on a cigar ), N"Sync, Jennifer Lopez ( and Ben Afflick I read both were heavy smokers and Matt Damon). Many young sports stars/ country music starts do the skoal/cigar route.

I guess the folks in entertainment believe smoking is sexy and cool. I also wonder how much the tobacco people have a hand in this? I am sure there is nothing the tobacco people love more than a big star among youth like Kid Rock or Ben Afflick lighting up a cigar or a Marlboro.

Yet they say they dont want kids to smoke. Hmmmmm.

Why make such products like "flavored" Camels and Marlboros? Chocolate/ Butterscotch/ Stawberry cigars. Mint Skoal?
Not gonna find a 50 year chain smoker asking for a pack of vanilla
Winstons. But a 20 something, you would.

Celebs who smoke don't bother me. After all, they are human beings just like the rest of us and they have their vices too.
I don't think it's cool when they make it really in-your-face though. Like, for example, Staind always smoke in their videos - there's no need to be so up-front with it as that, but if they wanna smoke in their own space then so be it.
I really have no right to critisize others for smoking cos I was a smoker myself for 4 years (and I do still have the occasional ciggie when the notion takes me) and I hated it when people used to bug me about quitting.
In fact, thinking about it, most of my fave celebs smoke. So I really don't care.
Whatever they wanna do - they're not breaking the law so just do it!

Well, I'm against smoking completely. I'm a singer and I value my voice, let alone my lungs, too much to even stick one in my mouth. However, as many know, I'm a HUGE old movie buff, and I've had to come to terms with the fact virtually ALL the actors of the time smoked, because it was the thing to do. They didn't know it was bad for you. Ginger Rogers was the only one who didn't smoke, I believe, and even she smoked for a short period. (Her first movie required her to smoke a cigarette, and she became addicted, but shortly knocked the habit.) Ginger is the actress I admire most of all my idols as a person in general, let alone her performing talents. She had firm morals and stuck by them, and was such a gracious and kind person. To me, that is to be admired.

I agree the smoking is a complete turn off. However, I admire Vera-Ellen and Bebe Neuwirth just as I do Ginger, and though it bothers me they smoked/smoke for health purposes, it doesn't make me admire them any less. (I'm sure V-E's was a great factor in her cancer which caused her demise, and THAT upsets me because she could have still been here today, and I could have at least had the opportunity to meet her... *tear*)

Anyway, Bebe's voice is still great, but you can tell the smoking has done some damage to it. If you listen to her on her days at "Cheers" her voice was much clearer than today. Such are the consequences of smoking. Such is life. We all make decisions that affect our life negatively in one way or another... I think it's their decision and I think it's more common in the biz because it's a stress reliever. Lots of dancers do it because it helps them to not shove food in their mouths when they're stressed, so they can maintain their weight. Thinking more in the moment than in the whole scheme of things, but I digress. As someone who has suffered from an eating disorder, people will do crazy things to stay thin. But image is another topic in itself.

So, my answer... yes, it bothers me, but I try not to let it bother me so much that it taints my admiration for the said person.

If you assume that every celebrity smokes, then you'll never feel disappointed. Especially if you find out that they don't smoke.
