This is from Yahoo.com...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Nell Carter, who played the sassy, matronly housekeeper on the 1980s sitcom "Gimme a Break!" and received a Tony Award in 1978 for her performance in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin'," died Thursday, her publicist said. She was 54.

The singer-actress collapsed in her Beverly Hills home and was found by one of her 13-year-old sons, spokesman Roger Lane said.

Carter had suffered from diabetes for years, Lane added, and underwent brain surgery in 1992 to remove an aneurysm. She recovered and continued to perform, mostly on stage.

Carter was in rehearsals at a Long Beach theater for "Raisin," the musical version of "Raisin in the Sun."

In addition to Carter's Tony win for "Ain't Misbehavin,'" she won an Emmy in 1982 for a TV broadcast of the show.

Her NBC comedy "Gimme a Break!" ran from 1981 to 1987, and garnered two more Emmy nominations, in 1982 and 1983.

In 1985, an episode of the show was broadcast live — the first for a situation comedy in nearly 30 years. Carter and her costars performed flawlessly, and at the end, she threw up her arms and yelled, "We did it!"

Growing up in Birmingham, Ala., Carter listened to her mother's recordings of Dinah Washington and B.B. King, and her brother's Elvis Presley (news) records. She liked Doris Day (news), the Andrews Sisters, Johnny Mathis (news), and admired the work of Cleo Laine and Barbra Streisand (news).

Carter said she would have preferred to be an opera singer. "When I was growing up, it was not something you aspired to," she said in 1988. "I was a weirdo to want to be in show business. Most kids wanted to be teachers or nurses."

This is a sad thing...:(

I feel so sorry for her family. :( I wish her show was on so they would have fans remember her more.

When Elizabeth Montgomery died N@N played a Bewitched marathon in her remembrance, N@N or TV Land should do the same for Nell in Gimme A Break.

I am going to cry so much! I really wanted to meet her in real life.

Its such a shock. I was talking on te Gimme A Break group, and I told someone thatNedra Voltz died, from DS ad guest starred on 2 episodes of GAB, then I hear Sad sad news from that same fan, and I thought he was telling everyone Nedra died, but then I read Nell Carter. Then I read that she died and I was so in shock.

I am 100% certain that there will not be a Gimme A Break reunion. I was ready with all in 2005 to go out to California to create it.

Nell, I will never get to meet you in life. I love you always and forever. I hope that these greedy networks make your show a legend and a fine aged sweet. Now that you are gone, you should be remembered and not forgotten.

I was one of your biggest fans out there and will continue to be.

She was such a darling, and fine woman. So kind...stayed outside to sign autographs for hours! It was funny...she would quietly sing while signing autographs, and it was soooo cute!

I was quite sad when I read the news of Nell's passing. I remember Nell sat behind me at the church I was attending when I was in college at San Francisco State. I will never forget that experience.

That's so sad! I just heard on Entertainment Tonight about Nell's death. I loved Gimme a Break as a kid and I haven't seen it in 13 years. Watch Entertainment Tonight on Friday when you'll hear responses to Nell's death (I'm not sure if any Gimme a Break co-stars will be on). I also saw Nell on Hangin' With Mr. Cooper.

"Entertainment Tonight" is syndicated. So that means that UPN, FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, WB, or whatever might have it on their station.

I have heard that Miss Carter's death has been discussed on CNN, CNN Headline News Channel, Entertainment Tonight, E! News Live, and at least one other entertainment channel. I'm sure it will be in all of the newspapers tomorrow and the next day, and magazines within the coming weeks. Since I have to do current events for school tomorrow, I wonder if this is a current event I shall do. It's kinda sad though. :( :crying:

My sister and I are huge fans of Gimme a Break and Nell Carter. Last year my sister gave my an autographed script from an episode, signed by Nell when she was in south Georgia for a women's health conference.
We are forever saddened by her death and will always remember her.

That would be nice, but I think it's highly unlikely. When Elizabeth Montgomery died, I belived that N@N already had the rights to Bewitched at that time.

I was so shocked when I heard that Nell died. I didn't wanna believe it. She was so talented and funny and she seemed like such an awesome person.

My brother and I grew up watching Gimme a Break. It was our favorite show! I had the privilege of meeting Nell Carter at a Women's Diabetes Workshop in my hometown of Albany, GA in May 2002. She was gracious, funny, inspiring and she sang Amazing Grace like I have never heard before. I will forever be grateful that I was able to meet such an amazing lady. She will be forever missed!
God Bless You, Nell, and rest in peace.

I remember Nell on Amen. I think she also had a guest performance on 227, playing a diva or something.
JustMarko: what episodes did you watch last night? I pulled out one in which Nell finds out her ex-husband Tony has gotten remarried. She, Addy, and Angie go out and see James Rowland at a restaurant. Pretty good episode, especially the song Nell sang at the end of the show...

This is such sad news. I heard about it yesterday, and it was such a shock.

Today at work, everyone was talking about it, which surprised me a little. I knew how important Nell was to me, but it felt good to know she had an impact on many people of my generation who grew up watching her.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time...especially her children.

I watched the one where Grandpa stayed over and was spying on next door neighbor Mrs. Falkenburg, the one where they were robbed and Nell got hysterical AFTER it was all over, the one where Nell had her phone taken away and she had to deal with Mr. Swackhammer (what a name) at the phone company and he also asked if she was Mrs. Fong!, the one where Helen Hunt was the pregnant friend of Katie's, the one where Eddie dates a hooker, and I started the one where Samantha had her imaginary friend Debbie Jo... I think they were all from the first season.... YES, I laughed out loud often!!

Yes, I remember Nell on "227" when she played an opera singer I think for a church production to benefit Mary's church or something.... I saw that a few years ago when they showed in on the BET Network... :o

It's not Jane Doe. It's Jane Dulo. And she was not in the opening credits according to Wildchats. And the guy who played Simpson, Howard Morton died as well as John Hoyt, Grandpa Stanley Kanisky. The Chief was played by Dolph Sweet who died in 1985. Mama Maybelle died as well. Rosetta LeNoire is best known as playing Mother Winslow on Family Matters from 1989-1997......

Seriously, I did not know she died untill I just read this. Where the heck have I been? This is some news for me. Gosh I loved her singing. She died 3 weeks ago? Goodness. I just finished watching her in the Inside TV Land repeat from last year. I'm shocked. I am serious when I say that I wanted her and my mother to sing a duet when the time came for me to get married, I guess that will never happen. OMG................

I did. I am actually in mourning for her and her family. I thought Nell was great. Very multitalented woman who should have received a star on the walk of fame.

The reason I really wasn't aware is because I went blind in one around the same time Nell had passed and really could not watch TV nor could I post on the boards. The day I got a little vision back in my eye is also the day she passed. I just thought about that. Anyway, my vision is back and I am back to posting now but my heart seriously goes out to her family. Nell had it goin' on.

I hope that Nell will someday get a star on the Walk Of Fame, unfortunately she won't be there to receive it,but she'll be there in spirit. Too sad she had to die so soon.

Its been a year since the death of Nell Carter whom died in January 2003, I was glad to see she was remembered as one of the most important figures that passed in 2003 along with others such as John Ritter, Fred Rogers, Robert Stack, etc.
