WB's 'Girls' Going to ABC Family

Cable's ABC Family has struck a groundbreaking deal to screen exclusive off-network rights to the WB network drama "Gilmore Girls" beginning in fall 2004.

Under the pact, series producer Warner Bros. Television will share in ABC Family's advertising revenue from the show, the first time a studio has struck such a deal for a drama rerun on cable.

ABC Family will pay a license fee of close to $500,000 per episode, insiders said, with the value of the deal to Warner Bros. potentially amounting to as much as $750,000 with the ad revenue included.

Recent deals for a couple of other shows -- "Malcolm in the Middle" and "King of Queens" -- also included ad components. But those deals are different: The shows are half-hours, and the repeats will air in broadcast syndication in addition to their cable runs.

ABC Family executive VP Tom Cosgrove said the show's exclusivity "helped seal the deal for us."

"It has a broad appeal and hits on the key demos we're currently strongest with, teens and young adults," he said.

"Gilmore Girls," which stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as a wisecracking mother-daughter pair, was the first program created under the advertising industry's Family Friendly Programming Forum and draws significant audiences for the WB. It premiered in October 2000.

The WB currently airs repeats of the show's first season, under the banner "Gilmore Girls: Beginnings," in Sunday's opening hour of primetime.

"Gilmore Girls" will likely be scheduled as a companion to another off-network drama on ABC Family, "7th Heaven," which joined the schedule in September. "Heaven" airs in afternoons and at 7 p.m. Monday-Friday.

ABC FAMILY

Sunday, October 3
Series Marathon
GILMORE GIRLS MARATHON (2:00 - 8:00 PM ET/PT )
The series tells the story of thirty something Lorelai Gilmore (Graham) and the close relationship she shares with her teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel, "Tuck Everlasting"). From the beginning, this unique mother-daughter team has been growing up together. Lorelai was just Rory's age when she became pregnant and made the tough decision to raise her baby alone. This defiant move and Lorelai's fiercely independent nature caused a rift between her and her extremely proper, patrician, old-money parents, Emily (Kelly Bishop, "Dirty Dancing") and Richard (Edward Herrmann, "The Cat's Meow"). Lorelai was forced to reconcile with them when she found herself in desperate need of money for Rory's tuition.

Series joins the regular programming schedule weekdays at 5:00PM ET/PT beginning Monday, October 4.

This always looked so dorky in the comercials, but I have been watching the reruns on ABC Family, and it is actually rather comical. The Friday night dinner scenes have produced some of the best arguments I have ever seen ("How do you mix up Anton and Sophia?" "What do you mean?" "Well, one is a man and one is a woman." "What's your point?" "That one is a man and one is a woman." "Frankly Laurelai, I don't have time to keep up with the multitudes of people that your mother hires." "But one is a man and one is a woman."). The mother may be a little spacey at times, but the clutsy, somewhat eccentric hotel staff and the rest of the characters in what is in my opinion the quirkiest town in America more than make up for it.

I started watching this when I saw promos for it on ABC family. I didn't feel like waiting for it to start on ABC family so I started watching it on The WB in mid-September. Needless to say, I'm hooked. This show is just so funny, especially the way the dialogue is presented. The arguments are priceless, just like IAlsoLoveRaymond said. I just got done watching the episode with the dance on ABC Family and thats probably the best ep I've seen yet.

I really do not know what was better, finding out that Paris took her cousin, or watching her flip out on Rory and announce to the whole school that she took her cousin.

"Bye Loon!"

Who names their kid Roon? Unless that was supposed to be a nick name, you have to expect that the guy would be a loser.

As far as favorite characters are concerned, I am going with either the dopey chef, or Luke who refuses to give in to silly town traditions. And I thought where I used to live was weird.

The town got it's first traffic light ever? And I thought where I used to live was slow.

Haha yeah that traffic light was funny
I think Luke and Lorelai make the cutest couple, I'm glad that Lorelai broke it off with Max, I didn't see any chemistry :p

Did i miss an episode somewhere? When did Triston ever get suspended? The episode where he gets pulled out of school was the first I had ever heard of it.

Well this gets better all the time. I thought I was going to fall out of my chair when I found out that Taylor owned Luke's building.

Best argument so far has to be Laurelai arguing with her mother OVER THE ANSWERING MACHINE!

And I have to ask, is this place based on a real town somewhere? I would like to see this place, if nothing else than to go to one of those town meetings.

The craziness at the dance marathon was a thing of genius.

I have to ask, what is the deal with Kirk? Does he serve any specific purpose within the town?
