View Full Version : The Honeybees Song
ProffesorFan 08-12-2000, 11:22 AM I've looked everywhere to find the lyrics of the song that the Honeybees sang, and here they are:
... ALL
You need us
You need us
Like a clam needs a shell
Like a prisoner needs a cell
Like a ding-dong...Needs a bell
You need us.
GINGER
You need me
You need me
Like a picture needs a star
Like a golfer needs a par
Like teenagers...mm mm...Need a car
You need me
MARY ANN
You need me
You need me
Like a baby needs a toy
Like Hawaiians need their poi
Like a girly...Needs a boy
You need me
MRS HOWELL
You need a me
You need me
Like a diamond needs a ring
Like a harp needs a string
Like a Queen...Needs a King
You need me
ALL
You need us
You need us
Like a Bee needs it's Buzz
Like a Peach needs it's fuzz
So that's why
You need
You need us
Bzzzzzzzzzzz

damon strong 05-26-2012, 04:36 PM Thanks! I could never figure out what Mary Ann was saying with the "Hawaiians need their poi" line no matter how many times I listened to it.

I'm obsessed w/ that song too!
Thanks! I could never figure out what Mary Ann was saying with the "Hawaiians need their poi" line no matter how many times I listened to it.
I had the same problem. Many websites I searched had the same lyric but it never sounded right. It took a lot of searching to eventually find the right one.

Bonniegirl 06-20-2015, 02:02 PM I LOVE the Honeybees song!! I loved that ep with the Mosquitos. One of the best GI eps ever!
I'd say the Mosquitos and the Beauty pageant eps were my two favorites!
When the guys sang (and they sang terribly, it was so funny) what did they call their group?

Marvo301 06-20-2015, 02:26 PM I like the "Honeybees" ep but my favorite musical ep. of G.I. was when they did the musical version of "Hamlet" and Phil Silvers was the gueststar! "Neither a borrower or a lender be..."

LOL! Thanks! :D
Samme 06-21-2015, 04:19 AM Yeah, that's a fun episode. Thanks too, to antman67 for passing along that youtube clip. Lots of fun too.
I don't know who wrote the song, but I've heard the music to the song played on two episodes of Perry Mason from 1965 and 1966 in recent weeks. I'm a little curious about the history of the song.

I thought Dawn, Natalie, and Tina actually recorded and sang that song themselves? According to Scherwood anyway at least? However according to: http://www.tvacres.com/music_songs_honeybees.htm The voice of Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) was dubbed by singer-songwriter Carol Connor.

I LOVE this MeTV commercial how they incorporated all their shows clips into the words of the song. SO GREAT! MeTV has some great commercials with a new spin out there and not just Gilligan too.
biffbronson 06-29-2015, 11:38 PM Right, I think recently on MeTV, Dawn mentioned that it wasn't her voice.
Regarding Perry Mason, you can also hear the tune in one of the episodes that the castaways hear when the Mosquitos have just arrived (no lyrics to it, both on GI and Perry Mason).
Babalu 07-21-2015, 08:03 PM I actually consider that Honeybee song the worst moment in Gilligan's Island history. When Natalie Schafer throws her hands up and squeals "You NEED me!" I want to throw up.
Flying Dutchman 07-24-2015, 04:18 PM I just loved Ginger and Maryann and also Mrs Howell in that song. And wow, how Ginger and Maryann looked doing that dance. Was that the Watusi?

This was one of my favorite GI moments! I loved the song and thought it was very catchy! Not sure what the dance was they were doing, but Tina kind of stole the show with those moves and her voice! Dawn was a pretty good dancer (didn't do her own singing tho), and Mrs. Howell was just really cute & funny. Loved it!
I think Dawn said when she hosted the MeTV thing that Natalie really wasn't crazy about doing that scene at all.

I noticed that at the end of the song where the Honeybees are buzzing on the soundtrack, Natalie has her lips together at first before figuring out that she should be showing her teeth like Tina & Dawn, since no one can buzz through closed lips.

I agree with everything you wrote! :) It's like I would have written the post exactly like you did! :) ;)
I don't even need to add anything!

I noticed that Miss Schaefer was also a little out of step but, rather these being unintentional 'slips' by the performer, I think these were done for comic relief because, as entertaining as it was seeing the gorgeous Miss Louise and Miss Welles sing and dance that song, it wasn't really humorous without the older woman being 'klutzy' next to them!
Yes, I can understand that Miss Schaefer not being 'crazy' about doing that scene since even with the sweater and mop wig, there was no disguising that she was noticeably older than the others in that scene , the dancing was nothing like the Charleston or Lindy Hop of her own youth- and it WAS somewhat out of character for Lovey to be participating in this ' commoner teen' dance.

EXACTLY!!! That is what made it so cool and funny! Natalie in that silly wig and how she emphasizes and over enunciates the word NEED!!!
You NEED me!!!! You NEED me!!!!!!! :D
PracTz 07-26-2015, 02:24 PM Thanks, BonnieGirl.
It's vital to remember that as much as GI appreciated 'eye candy' above ALL, it was a comedy!

I just tried to buzz with my lips closed. It can be done, but it's not as easy and it's a much louder buzz if you show your teeth!
east215 09-05-2015, 05:19 PM I saw this episode on TV Land and they cut the song to shreds! They sing the opening chorus then it cuts to the closing chorus. Less than 1 minute total. They completely cut out the lyrics sung by each individual woman. I had a friend who had never seen the episode and he couldn't see why I wanted him to see the scene. It was awful.

OH NO!!! That was the best part of the whole ep! Wonder why they chose that scene to cut?

The whole episode was poorly edited by people who apparently never watched GI!

TVLand is ABSOLUTE garbage! SO MANY COMMERCIALS. Your basically just watching commercial with brief moments of show stuck in. This specific episode on the DVD runs 25 minutes 21 seconds. On TVLAND it ran for 14 minutes 2 seconds. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES! ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL!

14 minutes and 2 seconds means that TV BLand literally airs more commercials than program. I had a feeling that they did.
