What are some movies that made an actor or actress a huge star? Also, what movies were so bad they ruined a star's career. (Permanently or temporarily.)

Movies that made a star:

Saturday Night Fever(John Travolta)

Home Alone (Macauly Culkin)

Movies that ruined a star:

Diabolique (Sharon Stone)

Fair Game (William Baldwin)

Crossroads (Brittany Spears)

Easy Rider' had what you might call a delayed effect towards stardom for everone of the main characters in the film.
Peter Fonda
Dennis Hopper
Jack Nickolson

Brian, I wouldn't say that Crossroads made Brittney Spears a star. There is no doubt of her music world stardom, and her popularity with the very young crowd, but...Movie Star? :)

Kramer vs. Kramer made Meryl Strep a star.

I got one!

Slyvester Stallone. "Rocky" made his career, and after perusing his filmography, I would have to say "Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot" was the beginning of the end for poor ol' Sly.

I said it possibly ruined her attempt to get into the movies. I know that Crossroads did nothing for her career.

Also,

Pulp Fiction (Resurrected the career of John Travolta and helped make Samuel Jackson a star.)

The Terminator (Arnold Schwartzenegger)

I read a review in newspaper by the usuall movie review guy. I like his reviews, and even when I don't, what the hey it's his opinion. Besides, he writes very well. Anyway he wrote a review on Crossroads, and I thought he took an interesting approach. It can't be easy to write about a movie that is aimed at the teenage level when you're not a teenager. Rather than knock the movie or Britney's acting he complemented her and pointed out that she should use whatever talent she has as an actress in her next attempt to move beyond that base level of story and plot, take on a more challenging role. If she does do something like Crossroads II, then her career as an actress probably would be over, or at least quite limited.

I e:mailed him to complement him on what he'd written. He got back to me Immediately! But...he'd misunderstood me, lol. He thought I was being sarcastic. There's more to the story but I'll get on with it. I wrote back to explain what I meant. He wrote back again to thank me and to let me know that he now saw where I was coming from. He also told me why he was on edge that day. About a month later he printed letters in the Sunday paper that he'd received from readers. He had edited together the two e:mails I had sent so that they clearly came across in the way that I intended. It was quite a surprise for me on that Sunday morning because I had no idea that he was going to do that.

Still, she got decent reviews for her part, but the movie got mixed reviews(better than Mandy Moore and all the rest of the other popstars moives). And it did well in the box office, so I didn't really ruin anything.

Okay, I don't think we've covered any actors/actresses who have had more than one career makin/breaking film.

One such actor is John Travolta.

"Saturday Night Fever" brought him to stardom in 1977. A few years later the disasterous "Perfect" (1985) put his career in hibernation. Although personally, I liked "The Experts."

In 1994, Travolta hits superstardom again with "Pulp Fiction." Mega success follows for several years, until the uberbomb "Battlefield Earth" welcomed in his second downward spiral.
Word is that John is working on another flick with Quentin Tarrentino, who is also trying to comback.
Can Travolta make it three?

If Quentin Tarrantino's writing it and directing it, Travolta's in good hands.

Actually, the rumor I read is that Tarentino is going to feature Travolta's "Pulp Fiction" character in another movie. Kind of a prequel...

Yeah, I think I heard about that rumor. I believe it's called "Viva Los Vegas." If I'm not mistaken it will star him and Michael Madsen as the Vega brothers. Michael played Vic Vega in Resevoir Dogs while Travolta played Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. I hope that movie gets made, it would be awesome!

Michael Madsen. There's a guy who needs another break.

That's for sure. He'll always conjure up the image of the maniac in Reservoir Dogs at the warehouse doing that sick dance..."Here I am"...lobs off cop's ear..."stuck in the middle with you."
To this day, I think of that nightmarish scene whenever I hear that song.
I haven't seen Die Another Day, so I don't know how big a role Madsen has in it, but hopefully he's on the comeback trail. He's underrated and underutilized.

A couple of years back he played a mobster in the short lived "Big Apple" on CBS, and in 1997 he had a short lived series "Vengence Unlimited" on ABC.
