Whatever happened to Detective Chano Amenguale? Was he ever written off the show or was he simply replaced? Thanks in advance.

Greg Sierra left BM at the end of the second season to star in his own show. I forget the name, but I've read it was an attempt to recreate a Barney Miller-like atmosphere in a hospital setting.

Storyline-wise he wasn't written off. A replacement for him came two years after he left in the form of a female detective (I can't remember her name, the one with an Italian surname), but she only lasted a couple of episodes.

I think he was great, I don't know how his character would have evolved had he stayed, but he seemed to be an extremely compassionate guy. He had that one episode when he shot two bank robbers dead, and Luger submitted his name to get a medal. It was pretty moving when he cried his eyes out alone in his apartment after Barney came to visit him. He had some sort of seniority over them all with the exception of Fish, and he seemed to be given the more difficult, undercover cases. It was really funny when he would switch to Spanish and just keep going. I speak Spanish, and back when i first watched the episodes, I spoke less English than I do now, so it was pretty fun to listen to his "Puerto Rican".

I believe the name of the show was A.E.S. Hudson Street. He played Dr. Antonio Menzles. His replacement on Barney Miller for a handful of episodes was Linda Lavin of Alice fame. I can't remember her characters name, but it was Italian sounding.

Her last name was Wentworth. ( was her first name Janis?)

Don't hear the last name Wentworth a lot
(although, heh, it is the last name of the actor who plays DETECTIVE GRIFFIN on Kung Fu:TLC)

^_^

Yep! That's the name of the show, however, (Wentworth) Linda Lavin wasn't Chano's replacement. Wentworth appeared in the first season, while Chano was still in the show. The name of the actress in question is Mari Gorman and her character's name was Rosalyn Licori. However, it is worth noting that they didn't bring anyone to the show to take Chano's spot. Storyline-wise, Licori was assigned to the 12th two years after Barney had made the request for a replacement detective.

I was very disappointed that Chano didn't last the entire run. I would've loved to see his character grow and evolve, like Wojo and Harris, etc. There was so much potential with his character. Oh well. :(
