Oh...I never thought of it that way. I always thought it was like, "You HAVE to do that...it's life (like part of like)". Like school man. I hate school, and mom tells me "You have to go, that's life". I get the school thing (sorta...), but what about with other stuff. How can you take ONE general idea, and make that the guideline for billions of people?! But....if it means your idea, then uh, forget this post. nm. haha

Wait ok, I read that again man, and it's like, dude, why does that HAVE to be life? I think people choose for life to suck or something, I dunno...

I think "That's life" can have a lot of meanings. Like since life isn't perfect then all things aren't perfect, or it could be meant litterally since what probably happened is a part of life. Am I making any sense?

Yah.. I understand lol. Like, certain things happen.. like really bad things, and someone will say THATS LIFE. But then you think, well, its not a part of EVERYONES life, so why should it just happen to me?!? The way I see it.. Thats Life is just another meaning for, "Lifes a bitch, get over it." Thats life is as good as the saying "Because I said so." LOl

I agree. You do have to move on with it... thats life. :bonk: However, thats life shouldnt be used if youre like.. oh, my mother died. THATS LIFE! Thats not exactly the best time to say it. Nor is it necessary. Thats Life is for people who could care less what you have to say. I feel that way too sometimes. I have sympathy for people, but if someones bitching about something I dont care about.. its like, I dont wanna hear your sob stories. Ya know?

I hate that saying. It's almost like it's saying "Don't bother to try to fix your problems because this is the way life is and if you don't like it, well too bad for you."

Whoever thought up that saying probably didn't bother fixing problems in their life and made up a stupid saying about it. Just a theory.

The saying, "That's life" doesn't bother me. I interpret it to mean...life is full of joy, sorrow, ups, downs, all arounds.
When something unpleasant is going on in my own life, I'll say it because it's true, that is life.
For example, if my husband is having a problem at work, I'll say it to him...."Workplace politics exist. It sucks, but that's life."
I don't view it as trivializing a problem.
Frank Sinatra sang a song called, That's Life.
I guess everyone has their own reactions to certain sayings.

That's true Janice. And in the political world of the workplace and other such things it's appropriate. Bu there is a much larger segment of life I think it is a defeatest attitude. A good example would be on the music board of Chit chat. One of "The Doors" members wrote about selling the bands songs for commercial purposes. He has fought it all of these years and states well as to why. It would be easy to say, "that's life" sell the **** you danged hippy, lol. But I am sure glad that he is holding down the fort. Not just in the small picture, but in the big picture.

You got my vote. :)
What is it with that anyway? Is it a variation of shut the hell up, but not wanting to say hell, so hell-icopter is substituted? Who knows.

I agree. There are times when saying, that's life, would be inappropriate and even rude. I wouldn't dream of saying it to someone who lost a loved one, has a serious illness, lost a job, etc.
I'll use a variation of it sometimes. Someone very close to me is struggling to come to terms with the fact that her teenage daughter is gay.
I've said to her, "I know this is upsetting to you, but this is one of those things in life that can't be changed. It's a fact, it's life, and you would be doing yourself and your daughter a favor if you'd accept it.....".
The thing is to be aware of its proper usage. After the recent deaths in my family, if someone ever said that's life to me, I'd clock them over the head and say, and THAT'S life too!

Even worse is the stupid phrase" It could be worse". When someone is in pain about something(an illness or death or something) that really trivializes things! That is a cruel thing to say to someone in real pain or despair! Believe me I know!:(

Well, it COULD "always be worse", but when youre dealing with a death or illness, to you it DOESNT get any worse. There is no such thing as "having it worst". There are countless ways to have it bad, and the only way you could ever find out, is if you walked in that persons shoes. Did that make sense? LOl

Yes that makes sense. Nobody knows what it is like being in another person's situation unless they have experienced it! Very well said. Remember that before you say that to anybody!

But I get your meaning and agree with it passionately. That's life, get over it, whatever, move on, and a whole bunch of other blahdiblahdiblah, cutseypie sayings just seem like an easy way to say nothing and pretend that you added something to the conversation. Not very philisophical or meaningful. Airheaded describes it. But, that's life. :D

I'd actually have to say "that's so gay" is the stupidest (and most offensive) saying. Especially when Jackie yells in a HUGE crowd "YOU GUYS ARE ALL GAY AS HELL!!!!!" Like it's an insult.

Ebonics, or AAVE, African American Vernacular English, evolved over hundreds of years. I believe the word ebonics was coined in about 1996 or '97 by an English professor from Oakland CA. His purpose for re-labeling and writing about AAVE was to differentiate it from mere slang or street talk. He was attempting to educate the educators. AAVE is the language that many of their young students grew up with. So when they show up to their first day of kindegarten they shouldn't be expected to 'fugetaboutit' ovenight, lol. Educators can't afford to ignore that fact if they hope to have the best chance of helping those children to learn. Words and phrases such as whatever, get over it, that’s life, looser, and many other ever so fun stylistic phrases and words are more closely affiliated with VGV, or Valley Girl Vernacular :). VGV has only been around for about 30 years. Long enough for it to be considered a stumbling block in communication.
