I liked Mr. Olson because he was always putting Harriet in her place.

So many great ones. But I'd say Albert. Many people think the show "jumptheshark" upon his arrival, and even though his character was fictional, I think he helped the show since Mary was out of the house. Usually adding kids doesn't work on shows, but his addition was done well and he was a great actor. Before him, Mary was definitely my other fave. The first few seasons with the storylines focusing on her were definitely some of my favorite episodes.

I love Mary Ingalls Kendall. I hated that fact the Michael Landon had the character lose her baby. Melissa Sue Anderson did a wonderful performance in that episode.

Yes, Melissa was really great in the episode where her baby gets killed. That made me angry too that they had him die. Some say they did that so the end result would be that Mary would be motherless just like she was in real life, because they wanted to "keep it real." Same with Albert's death because Albert wasn't a real person. (Supposed death, rather. So much has circulated with that story I won't even go there on this post.)

Personally, I think that reason for these deaths are hogwosh because Mary never married in real life yet they kept Adam around. And how about James and Casandra (oy, what a couple of weak additions)? We are meant to believe they stick around in the Ingalls clan.

I wish her baby never died... or Mrs. Garvey.

actually, I was going to say that Cassandra was on eof my favorites. Though the Coopers, are fictional, I think they added to the storyline. i mean the show was BASED on the books and documents by Laura Ingalls Wilder, none were exactly true. (The LHOTP books by LIW are fictional too. they are BASED on her life but some of those stories never happened) but you are right they did add a lot of characters that never existed

Anyway, my favorites were:

Cassandra
Jenny-who was also fictional
Laura-she used to be my role model

Oh yeah. I totally don't have problem with adding new characters. Afterall Albert is my favorite. I've never read any of the books so its not like I take it too hard that they didn't stick close to the book series. I should elaborate on my calling James and Casandra weak additions.--They're not necessarily weak--It was weak of the writing team to bring them on. It just seemed too much at this point.

Albert being adopted was fine (even a great "replacement," if you want to call it that, since Mary moved out) but then in season 8 we have new addtions with the Cooper kids and Nancy. It was clear these were replacements. Nancy replacing Nelly, the Cooper kids replacing the twins' bad acting... according to many. Personally, it's been so long ago since I've seen season 8, but I thought maybe the twins playing Carrie were improving. The twins playing Grace... it's hard to say. They were never given a chance. And in the end Carrie wasn't either. It just seemed mean to cast those two people, REAL CHARACTERS, in the shadows so Charles can save the day and take in two orphans. Season 8 is just, uh, I don't know... not very Little House on the Prairieish. And season 9... I don't even want to go there.

I do love the series from beginning to end--I can even sit through about every episode of season 9 so all in all, the series is a winner. Replacements or not.

Mr. Edwards

:Side note: Mr. Edwards is mentioned several times in the Little House books. But the odd thing is that there seems to be no record of him anywhere. This has become a mystery to a lot of researchers who have traced the Ingalls family in all their homes and there is nothing on record of Laura's Mr. Edwards! Wonder who he was?
