I was wondering why Corabeth always called Ike Mr. Godsey even after they were married!!! I know that partly that is considered disrespectful to call their husbands or wives by Mr. and Mrs.!!! What was up with that??? Was Corabeth that insecure??? I know that on Little House on the Prairie that Nels and Harriet called each other by their own names,Harriet didn't call Nels Mr. Oleson!!! Any comments would be appreciated!!!

Corabeth, on occasion, called Ike by Ike. It was when there was a romantic moment.

I think the writers just thought it was amusing -- just another one of ultra-proper Corabeth's many affectations. I do remember her calling him Ike a few times when she got emotional.

Corabeth wanted to distance herself, I think, from the mountain lifestyle that surrounded her. She was a "lady," accustomed to more finer things. Although she wasn't necessarily rude, she did come off as huffy.

So, for "Mr. Godsey," I think it was because she wanted to be as high-class as possible. That was a distinguishing mark on her, and one that she wanted to maintain.

And funny, someone mentioned Mrs. Oleson... I think the two ladies are similar. Both store keepers, married to much nicer men. Somewhat resentful of the surroundings. Have daughters. Have a "snobbish" attitude about them...

Kind of interesting.

It's a very old-fashioned thing; remember, Corabeth was brought up as a lady at Doe Hill. In the old days, wives often called their husbands "Mr. _________," or "Father," or, if they had a title, "the Doctor" (for example). It was part of the same era when a woman was "Mrs. John Smith," not "Mrs. Jane Smith."

I don't think anybody could be as bad as Harriet Oleson.
