View Full Version : Airbrushing The Beatles

I bought a couple of giant Beatles posters yesterday. Both were official. They had 2002 Apple copyrights.

One poster had the covers of all of The Beatles' British albums, plus various pictures of the lads at various times during the band's career.

The other poster was a huge version of the Abbey Road cover. When I hung this one up, I noticed something odd: the cigarette was missing from Paul's hand. I then asked myself two profound questions:

1. "What the hell?"

2. "Why?"

Now, I'm a staunch anti-smoker, but this is ridiculous. Come on, Apple, leave the public service announcements to Partnership For A Drug-Free America. What are they going to do next? Remove all the cigarettes from the upcoming "Let It Be" DVD?

I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of the digital airbrush was, but it sure looks awkward, even if you don't know that the cigarette should be there. I guess they want to pretend Paul didn't used to smoke cigarettes. To this non-smoker, it's not that big a deal. Next time, Apple, leave well enough alone.

Since posting this last night, I heard through the grapevine that Paul wants to alter all pictures of him holding or smoking a cigarette.

Paul, what's the point? You're a non-smoker now. Great. But if you really want to jump on the cause, make some public service announcements. Please don't **** with the Abbey Road cover when the catalog gets remastered. You can't change the past.

Besides, the cover of Abbey Road is a classic piece of art. This is akin to painting an ear-to-ear grin on the Mona Lisa.

I agree.. I'll say it once again, Paul's an ass. He can't make everyone forget that he was a constant smoker. Changing pictures isn't going to change anything. That'd be like Michael Jackson having every old picture of him airbrushed to make him look like he is now. That's ****ing ridiculous.

Okay, I'm sure that Paul wants to alter the pictures of him smoking and all probably because Linda died from cancer and all,
but COME ON!!! It's a part of your past, Sir Paulie. Prolly wants to DENY he "had a giggle" when Bob Dylan introduced them to pot in the 60's--and they were known for their
vast consumption of pot...

Anyone have any pictures where he's eating a HAMBURGER???
(and not the tofu kind???)

Haven't you heard? They're airbrushing the tofu in next week.

What's been with Paul lately? Is he having male menopause?

Looks like Paul is falling into the "I'm a celebrity and that gives me the position and obligation to tell you how to live" syndrome. They all do it! Give it up Paul! And please don't airbrush shoes on your feet! (Of course they wouldn't be LEATHER shoes!)

Getting mad about getting old? He's not even that old yet! Is he pissed of cause he's almost 64? What, is he going to change "When I'm 64" to 94 now?

The Abbey Road cover looks awkward without the cigarette. Paul is obviously positioning his hand to hold something. With that in mind, here are some ideas of how to better change history.

Apple, I hope you're reading. And I also hope anyone with Paint Shop Pro talent is reading.

From our home office in Hill Valley, CA:

Top ten things to put in Paul McCartney's hand in place of a cigarette

10. Do the Dew!
9. A sign that says "I wrote Eleanor Rigby!"
8. A prosthetic leg
7. Gloves designed by Stella McCartney
6. The latest issue of O Magazine
5. A copy of the "Back In The U.S." DVD
4. A pack of Nicorette Gum
3. Four words: "Drop the tofu chalupa"
2. A Nokia cell phone
1. A bag of money

It may not the end of the world, but it's tampering with what is considered one of the most recognizable and popular pictures of the rock era. ("Rock? What's THAT??"  )I know that Paul McCartney may not be proud of many of his vices way back when, and I'm glad he's consciencious enough to not want viewers to think he's endorsing smoking, but he's advocating the TAMPERING OF ART due to political correctness. If this happens, what goes on next? The airbrushing of ANYTHING
due to "offensive content"--not even posters or photos or album covers, but LYRICS and even FACTS about performers. It's all very
1984-ish. "Who controls the past and present, controls the future." In that way it IS the end of the world.

Anyone remember several years ago when they had postage stamps commemorating great African-American musicians of the past and they AIRBRUSHED a classic photo of Robert Johnson, the blues great considered to be a forefather of rock & roll? The original photo had him with a cigarette in his mouth, but when they altered it, they made look dopey and slack-jawed. PC run amok.

Of course no one remembers that, the government erased your memory...

I have no gripe with any of y'all's opinions about this but I've read more than once that mostly bogus term 'political correctness' being brought up and blamed for his decision. I'd say Paul probably made this decision all on his own and no political pressures of any kind played a part in it. This is how rumors get started and the blame game is catapolted into high gear. Unless I hear otherwise I'm attaching the full and complete burden, if that's what it is, for this decision on the shoulders of Paul McCartney. No other group or individual that I'm aware of is responsible. And like Kristine said, it is just a ciggarette in a picture.

When I first heard about this in this post, I naturally thought it was pressure from some lobby group. I never thought that Paul would fall prey to this! Oh well.......... I was wrong! He must have a good reason for this. Does anybody have the FACTS?

I just would be surprised if Paul at this stage of his life would cave to this it he didn't want to do it. But, I don't know yet.
