Personally, I think the Grammy Awards are a joke and so do most of the people in the music business.

It is a total pop fest where hundreds of artists are overlooked and throughout history some of the best bands and albums have been completely ignored.

Just check out the list of artists that never won or were never nominated. You'll be shocked and start to get the picture.

No real musician is hurt by not being nominated or winning, because it has always been a laughable process supposedly honoring the best in music.

Of all the major Awards - Academy, Emmy, Tony- this is the joke of the litter.

George Harrison's "Brainwashed" is a glaring omission. I'd have to agree with dlemond, the grammys are a joke.

Perhaps one good thing will come out of it, George Carlin (my favorite comedian) is up for another grammy for Comedy album. Maybe he'll win it yet again.

The Grammy's are a joke. A bunch of old rich men decided who wins. That doesn't say much.

and about half of the people listed don't even deserve to be nominated.

I'd have to agree the Grammy's are a joke, and like Santana did that year, the same artist's win them ALL! It's better when the people that listen to the music vote for the awards!
But my choices are:

Record of the Year: Without Me by Eminem
Album of the Year: Nellyville by Nelly
Song of the Year: Where were you by Alan Jackson
New Artist: Avril Lavinge
Pop Vocal Album: Rock Steady by No Doubt
Rock Album: C'Mon C'Mon by Sheryl Crow
Rap Album: The Eminem Show by Eminem
Country Album: Home by Dixie Chicks
:)

Sorry folks, the Hawkeye Awards nomination comittee doesn't vote on music, so you'll get no picks from me...

The Best New Artist category should be an interesting contest.
Will it be the retro Nora Jones, lone male nominee John Mayer, or will the Grammy voters try to be "down" with the kids and go for Avril or Ashanti?

Anyone know who's hosting the show?
When the heck are the Grammy Awards anyway?
Where have all the cowboys gone?

The Grammys is just a big promotional tool for the music industry. They don't honor the artists or the music. If it did, I doubt Britney Spears or Avril Lavigne would've been nominated. It's just the music business celebrating itself.

Actually the grammys are based on talent (which is why Britney has never won a grammy or VMA, I believe.) Avril is very talented and is up for FIVE grammys so yeah thats very good, she deserves it. So shut up.

The Grammys are 99.9% based on what is popular. Its a crock. Notice how No Doubt makes a crappy album that they knew would be popular, and it gets all those nominations. Their last album got none, and it was 10X's better, just because they were pretty dead at that time, and the album wasn't what was "in". If the Grammy's is based on talent, Avril sure as hell wouldn't be nominated. I bet La Reid is ****ting his pants right now on whats hes created.

Avril is very talented and is up for FIVE grammys so yeah thats very good, she deserves it. So shut up.

Wow, and Britney's been up for what, 4? And if Avril wins a Grammy, Britney better demand one.

It's based on popularity and what the mainstream record labels put out. Can you name one artist that isn't signed to a major record label that has been nominated for Grammy this year? There are plenty of more deserving artists than Avril Lavigne, Britney, and almost every artist that has been nominated this year. They just don't have that major labels backing them up or the top ten hits.....and top ten hits, major labels, etc. do not make you talented.

The Grammy's aren't based on talent.

Like, everyone else said... they are based on popularity. The production teams behind the albums are the ones that pick, and nominate the winners.

The Grammies since their inception have always been chosen by a bunch of unhip prunefaces who have no clue about music. I have read that they were originally started in order to hype up performers in the music industry who felt threatened by the rising popularity of rock & roll in the 50's. Funny how Metallica were chosen to be the first hard rock/heavy metal band to play live on the Grammies in 1989 (I watched that and it was killer!!!). So they lost to Jethro Tull. You don't need Grammy validation.

Jethro Tull's song/album "Crest of a Knave" was really good, tho.
