View Full Version : The 1897 Storyline Continues...
Sean Snow 01-06-2003, 07:57 PM I made this topic so us DS fans can talk about the current going ons in this storyline after Sci Fi airs the episodes each day.
I liked today's episodes. I was expecting Barnabas to turn into a bat during the fire, but disappearing I guess is the next best thing. I wonder if Ben has left any clues in his grave? I personally don't think so, Ben wouldn't betray Barnabas' secret since Barnabas was his friend even before all the strange going ons began happening.
Christopher 01-06-2003, 08:39 PM Todays episodes were so cool! I loved the ending to the second episode. Laura was like "Who Are You?" then the lightening flashed on Barnabas, I love it! I hate that Laura is leaving this Thursday. :( I love her character. I wish they would have brought her back in the later storylines to spice things up a bit.

I agree. I love Laura. Diana Millay was good at playing her. I wish she had been brought back, even if it wasn't as Laura. Tomorrow's episodes look good. Angelique is going to be in the 8:30am episode. I'm looking forward to the interaction between Angelique and Laura in the next five episodes.
Sean Snow 01-08-2003, 08:11 PM I loved today's episodes! The ending with Angelique was great. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's episodes even though Laura's last episode airs tomorrow. Angelique has changed a lot since 1795!

Did you notice the goof Judith made when she said to Laura "What is it? Did something happen to David, Jamison" ? I notice that goof right away it was in the first episode. I guess it is hard trying to remember all those names.
Todays episodes were great. The ending to the second episode was better and more scary like. Tomarrow Laura leaves :( I'm not looking forward to this :(

Yep. They always seemed to forget David Henesy's character's name. A couple of times in 1795 Daniel was called David. I saw a clip from a Joan Bennett interview from 1970 and she said the hardest part of doing the show was memorizing all the names.
I loved the ending for #761 today! With the figure in the window. I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow to see who it is. ^-^
Brandon 01-09-2003, 07:11 PM I've finally seen Angelique! She's so beautiful in 1897.. -- Well, I think Laura is a big looney. more of a looney than Jenny (I wish she would have stayed longer). I'm REALLY gettin' sick of Barnabas. It's not the character I'm fed up with, it's the actor who plays him. Jeez! he sux at acting, and he always messes up and tries playin it off. I mean, he's supposed to be all mysterious and spooky, but he's constantly studdering and stumbling over his lines, and he looks just so dumb! But, the rest of the cast is really good. I think if Victoria was there, it would be awesome. Isn't she SUPPOSED to be there anyways? She went to 1897 with her love, Jeff/Peter.

I love Angelique in this storyline. Lara Parker is always great as her. She's not going to be on again until #779. I wish there weren't such long periods of time between some of her episodes. :(
I like Jonathan Frid as Barnabas, but I know we all have different opinions and I can see why you hold yours. ^-^
Victoria went to live in the year 1796 (not 1897) with Peter, so she would've probably died in the first half of the 19th century.

I think Jonathan Frid is a great actor. He's the only guy actor on the show that knows how to actually act. I love the scary looks he gives, like to Laura yesterday when she went to go get her children. I love this show and most of the actors are good.

I also like Jonathan Frid, though I can understand why others may not like him. I agree about the cast. There are a lot of talented actors and actresses on the show, though there are some duds. I love the storylines, especially the ones that take place in the past.
Sean Snow 01-10-2003, 09:32 PM I loved the scene with Quentin and Minerva in the drawing room today! Clarice Blackburn rocked. I loved how it all dawned on her that her husband's roving eyes were set on Judith.
Sean Snow 01-13-2003, 12:34 PM Did anyone notice today in the teaser for #764 how the chair Evan was sitting in broke apart right before the credits? I suppose they quickly switched chairs before they returned from commercials.

I didn't notice that. Now that Barnabas is showing everyone he is friendly and wants to help will they still want to kill him after they find out he is a vampire?

A lot of goofs were apparent in Dark Shadows! Especially the so-called special effects! They were pretty bad! Like the bat . How fake can you get! Also there was a scene in which a page of a book was supposed to be turned by a ghost but the fishline was quite obvious! When we first watched this in the 60's we always got a good laugh! Now don't get me wrong! I loved that show and never missed an episode!:) ;)

Yeah, the special effects weren't the greatest. But they were good, imo, considering most soap operas never did that and since it had a low budget. A fishline was also seen in an episode where a psychic, Madam Findlay, was looking around an abandoned room. She accidently got her caught for a second in a fishing line that was supposed to open the door.
I am looking forward to tomorrow's episodes. In the first one there is a ghost, and in the second one there is a dream sequence that takes place in the present day with Elizabeth, Roger, Carolyn, David, and Quentin.
Sean Snow 01-16-2003, 10:06 PM I loved the dream! It was great. I loved the entire thing with the puppets, lol
I liked Pansy Faye. I was ROTFLMAO when she was shaking her bottem at Barnabas and Beth lol. Too bad she had to go after just one episode *le sigh* At least she comes back as a ghost.
EDITED: There is an interesting article concerning murder and DS here: http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/66706.htm
Please note that the NY Post is like a tabloid, so they do over exagrate the connection between DS with the murder.

Yep, it lasts 184 episodes. The second longest would be the Dream Curse/Adam storyline, which is usually either considered episodes #461-627 or #461-436.
I'm looking forward to the storylines from 1970PT and on. I've seen some clips from them, and they seem really good. And I'm looking forward to the other episodes of 1897 and the Leviathans.
Sean Snow 01-22-2003, 08:33 PM I thought the last scenes with Rachel today were sad. :( I'm happy they killed Dirk for all the things he's done. I'm looking forwad to seeing Pansy again tomorrow; it's her last appearence. I wish they kept Kay Frye and Jane Draper (aka Suki Forbes) on the show longer. *Shrug*
Christopher 01-23-2003, 07:17 PM Well today was ok. I didn't like Carls' dream. That woman annoyed me. Plus Barnabas is going to be discovered. Damn Carl  And Trask, why won't Barnabas kill him!!! I hate him the most on the show!
S*P*O*I*L*E*R*S
Trask marries Judith and gets her locked up! What a butt hole! I like Judith's character. Anyone else like Judith?

I felt bad for Carl. It was mean for Quentin - his own brother - to lock him up there. Well I think the killing has gotten way out of hand. I mean everyone is dying lol. First Pansy (I wanna dance for youuuuu), then Rachel, and then Dirk. And of course knowing that Carl has found out what Barnabas is I doubt he'll live.
Yeah Greg Trask is the worst Trask personality wise. He's a womanizer and prays on young women. I think the only reason he liked Rachel was because he was hoping he'd get to see her naked. puke:

Carl got what he deserve! I'm glad Carl will die soon he gets on my nerves! Plus he wants to destroy Barnabas!
Pitooey 01-24-2003, 09:35 AM I laughed when they hid dead Carl behind the curtain so Rev. Trask won't see him. Then all of a sudden he fell. That was really unexpected......... :happyface :happyface :happyface

I haven't seen it yet because of school, but I taped it so I'll be watching it later and will be looking for that scene Jenny :)
I haven't read any spoilers but does Trask die anytime soon or leaves for awhile? I hate his character so much.

lol, Carl was so weird the past few episodes after being off the show for 50 or so episodes. Carl really didn't do anything to deserve it, imo. He was just in the wrong place and the wrong time. It's too bad Barnabas couldn't find a cover for it all. *Sigh* Now Carl's death is causing a lot of trouble.
John Karlen (who was born John Karlewicz) had decided to leave the series to go to Hollywood. He came back in the Leviathan storyline after they offered him a role in House of Dark Shadows.

Nope, he stays to the end. I hate the character of Trask, but that's a testiment to Jerry Lacy's acting skills. He's a 'good guy' as Tony Peterson in 1967/8 and so icky and evil as the Trasks.

Yes. It was filmed during the 1970PT storyline. A lot of the key players in HODS aren't seen that often in parts of that storyline because they were busy filming the movie. It was released in September 1970. Filming on NODS started a few days before the final episode aired, and was then released in Septembre 1971.
Christopher 01-24-2003, 08:13 PM Which movie did better? HODS or NODS? just wondering...

I like NODS better. It had a better storyline, imo at least. It's too bad the movie got hacked to pieces in editing. I hope Darren Gross and Dan Curtis Productions are successful in getting a 129 minute version out on DVD.
I like ghost stories better than the evil monster/blood drenched stories. HODS had a lot of un-needed blood in it, imo at least. Usually ghost stories don't have to resort to blood to make it interesting.
In an article I read about the two movies, they made me notice things that I didn't notice before. The boodshed in HODS could be done only in a supernatural world, while the NODS blood could happen in the real world.
I love the storyline of NODS. HODS was sort of boring to me. It was just a rehash of the Barnabas storyline with Barnabas being meaner and causeing more damage.
Christopher 01-24-2003, 08:24 PM I meant like which movie did better at the theaters? Which movie made more money? HODS or NODS?

OO LOL Sorry I misread your thing. I thought it said which movie did you like better. *Dumb blonde moment*
During HODS' first three months in movie theatres in the United States and Canada, the movie made $1,836,000. I've read that it was MGM's third top grossing movie of the year.
NODS made $1,400,000 in the same amount of time. However, it did have the disadvantage of being released a few months after the series was cancelled.

Neither HODS nor NODS is set to air within the next two weeks.

Yes, it lost ratings. From September 1969-September 1970, the show had an average of 16,000,000 viewers. This was pretty good. It was a drop from 1968-1969, but it was still good. DS at the time was ABC's #1 soap opera.
In the fall of 1970, some stations started to drop the series to make way for their own programming. From September 1970 to April 1971, the show lost an average of 4 million viewers. So in Febuary of 1971 (or March, not sure), ABC announced that with a viewership of 12,000,000 viewers, they were cancelling the series and replacing it with a revival of the game show Password. The irony of it was that in March 1971, the ratings went back up. However it was too late to reverse their decision and the show went off the air.
Sean Snow 02-10-2003, 09:27 PM Wermsies I thought the scene when Charity was possessed by Pansy was hillarious. And I liked it when Charity told Quentin about how he's going to the village to go see some slut.
Pitooey 02-11-2003, 10:26 AM Charity is hysterical. I loved how she played her. What a good actress she was. I love when Charity walks while singing the Charity song. She swivels her hips.

Barnabas got free when Quentin threatened Petofi by saying he'll send King Johnny Romano of the gypsies after him if he doesn't let Barnabas go. Magda got kidnapped by King Johnny and his assistant Istvan. Barnabas made Istvan jump off Widow's Hill, and he got King Johnny to leave Magda alone. King Johnny went to cut off Petofi's hand, but Aristede killed him. Also, Beth was almost killed by Charity when Charity tried to poision her. Angelique was able to lift the spells Petofi put on Jamison and Edward. At the end of today's episode Charity had a vision of Quentin's death.
Angelique is great. Werm. I just got a notice from Amazon that Collection 4 got shipped. It has her first two or three episodes and an interview with her. She added a lot to the show.
Sean Snow 03-01-2003, 12:40 AM I got DVD Collection 4 in the mail today. It's great. I've been skipping around the episodes looking at various scenes and the interviews. I'm looking forward to watching it. It was also my first time seeing #367 in color. When Sci Fi aired it they used a kinescope version even tho the video tapes also have the color version *shrug*

That's not the 1840 storyline, that's 1841PT. In 1840 Lara Parker is still Angelique except she's going under the alias of Valerie. I've seen the first few episodes of it and it isn't so bad. *Shrug*

Werm I was assuming since you said you wouldn't like 1840 that you meant 1840 Real Time since there was no PT at the end and since it was 1841PT. Werm. Oopsies then.
1841PT looks sorta interesting but I wish they had included some of the real time characters, like Barnabas or Julia.

it's all good. EVERYONE gets confused. like i do a lot. -- so, how exactly do they get into parallel time? (i'd like to mention that a parallel time storyline is a great idea)

Well in 1970 sometimes they were in this room in the East Wing (I think - may be wrong on that) and they would see a parallel time. Barnabas goes into it in 1970.
In 1840, they occasionally looked in the parallel time room. One of the 1840 characters was accidently sucked into the parallel time room (usually they could only view what was going on) and died there. From then on, the action just shifted to 1841PT until the end of the show.

What does everyone think about Amanda Harris? I think she's okay. She's not the best, but she's not the worst, imo. I know a lot of fans dislike her character.
Brandon 03-01-2003, 08:28 PM i haven't seen her
Sean Snow 03-03-2003, 06:43 PM I liked today's scenes set in the present. It's nice seeing the present time characters again.

OH! the girl who lost memory after that guy painted her! -- and sean, i loved the present scenes myself.
Sean Snow 03-10-2003, 09:28 PM I like Kathryn Leigh Scott's new character, Kitty Soames (Lady Hampshire), more than her character of Rachel Drummond. Kitty seems a LOT different.
I thought the scene between Pansy and Quentin was a great way of setting up Pansy going to Barnabas' coffin and doing what Quentin didn't want to do.
Sean Snow 03-22-2003, 10:36 PM Werm imo the Petofi Quentin thing is starting to get old...well right now to me at least. I liked how Julia left at the moment Quentin needed her most.
I love Kitty lol. She's great as the gold digger. I think it's funny that Edward wants to marry her for her money, and she doesn't have any. And Kitty wants to marry Edward for his money, and he doesn't have any. *Giggles* WErm
Christopher 03-23-2003, 12:39 AM I don't know that much of what's going on, I plan on watching it though Mar. 27 because that is when Barnabas returns and I want to see how they made him come back as a human and not a vampire. It sounds interesting.

Are you going to be tuning in for the Leviathan storyline? I can't wait for it to start. 1897 has been going on forever it seems..werm.

I thought today was the 27 so I tuned into Dark Shadows and Barnabas wasn't in it then I realized it was the 26  I need a calendar :p
I can not wait until the Leviathan storyline. I will be watching that for sure.
Sean Snow 03-27-2003, 09:47 PM yay! Barnabas is back! I'm glad. I liked the episodes w/o him, but it's nice seeing him back. I really like the storyline around Kitty, who I think is KLS' best character. Joan Bennett is great as Judith once again.
