View Full Version : A potentially silly idea for a game...
highloon 01-06-2003, 02:00 AM Does anybody here want to try and play a game based on Coach? The way it works is that one of us posts a word and then someone tries to place that word in a line from a Coach episode. The only rule is that whoever chooses the word has to have an episode in mind where that word was used. The responses don't have to be verbatim, just as long as the word is there.
For example, the word is "dog"
The quote is: He's not a dumb dog, he's just insecure.
Now it's your turn. The word is "stain"
I hope somebody will find this fun, otherwise I'll feel silly!
Janice 01-06-2003, 03:17 AM Now let's see if I can get this right without making a fool of myself. I have to use the word stain in a sentence from a Coach episode?
I'm not good at remembering dialog, but Luther did stain the carpet in Christine's apartment, as well as almost burning the place down, among other things.
Did I play correctly? Please don't hesitate correct me.
Next clue: Hat
highloon 01-08-2003, 12:06 AM I knew I could count on you, Janice. You're very close. For "stain", you might've said something like, "Does grape juice stain?" Again, you don't have to know the line verbatim, but try and use the word in a line from the show.
As for "hat", Howard comes to mind: "I'm thinking of getting the matching hat." This is referring to the scene where Howard asks the gang's opinion of his unsightly golfing pants.
Also, remember Drewer's Coffee and how Hayden reacts to all the attention Daniel and Christine are getting? "If that's how you feel, next time we go to bed together, I'll wear a top hat!"
The new word is "dumb"
Janice 01-10-2003, 01:23 AM For dumb,
Christine's co-worker, the sportscaster, said to her, "Hayden's the dumbest coach in football."
Close enough?
Christine then proceeds to spill the beans about Bo Whitley (I think) being recruited to Minnesota State.
The new word is "diabetic".
highloon 01-10-2003, 07:43 PM Yes, indeed, that is close enough, Janice. Way to go. Diabetic, huh? I don't know...
As a reminder, I have not seen any episodes prior to when Stuart and Kelly get married, and after the Eagles win the Pioneer Bowl in San Antonio. If "diabetic" falls into either of those categories, I'm dead in the water. If it doesn't, then I think I'm stumped. I'm not too proud to admit that I need your help with this one. Perhaps a hint of some sort?

You got it. "Christmas of the Van Damned".
Not sure how this episode falls in the cycle as the show's jumped around so much chronologically.
highloon 01-11-2003, 02:22 AM Okay Janice, I think it's coming to me. This episode was accidentally erased from my collection years ago, but it does fall into the space of time that I was an avid watcher. If memory serves, at the Christmas party, Luther is so taken with the cake being served(or is it pie?) that he pretty much forces a nearby relative to try it. The relative reacts strongly and says, "I'm diabetic." and begins to pass out or something.
Assuming I made it through that one, the new word is "dead."
Is this even remotely entertaining? I'm enjoying it, but I just thought I'd ask.
Janice 01-11-2003, 03:05 AM You answered diabetic correctly.
For dead, I'll say that when Hayden left Kelly's wedding to hide in the lookout tower...Luther goes to talk to him but tosses the rope ladder off the tower. He was frantic and saying, "We're going to die Hayden. We're dead."
I honestly don't know if he said dead or not, but I can sure picture him saying it, lol.
If that works, the next word is "sweater".
speedbump 01-11-2003, 06:05 AM I've wanted to jump into this a few times, but I couldn't think of the episodes where I heard the word. This one though is a cinch.
Howard tells Shirley, "It will go great with the sweater I'm already wearing" or something close to that when she becomes his secretary. Then on Hayden's advice, Howard fires Shirley and she later rams into Howard's car. It's great!! Fun game, hopefully I can get into it a little more.
The new word is "sunshine."
highloon 01-11-2003, 11:48 PM Glad to have you along for this, Speedbump. I believe in the pilot episode, Luther says, "They bring him to Miami, he sees all that clean air and sunshine, they fix him up with a girl in a bikini, and pow! He's as good as signed. What do we do? We bring him out to the tundra and take him icefishing with a girl in a parka!"
Assuming there are no "boos" from the gallery, the new word is "burger"
Just a reminder, always use a word that you know for sure has been used in an episode.
Big Coach Fan 01-13-2003, 01:44 AM Wasn't Luther's parrot named sunshine as well?
As for burger... I'm going to say that it would have to be where Hayden is talking to Christine about selling Luther his truck. Hayden speaks of "mens town" where you could eat steaks every night and Luther chimes in that when you were young boy it was a burger..
If that one fits I'll say.... "loon"
highloon 01-14-2003, 01:07 AM Way to go, Big Coach Fan. I think you once said that Men's Town was one of your faves, didn't you? Maybe I'm off, but in any event, great choice for "burger." I was curious if anyone would choose Alamo Burger from the Pioneer Bowl ep, but what the heck? Men's Town is great!
Regarding "loon", I can't resist this one. Obviously, "highloon" comes to mind, but so does Hayden's great bit with Christine's dysfunctional friend Barbara, "You say you're sure of yourself? You are a loon! You write a column called 'Independent Woman?' You are a basketcase woman!"
Unfortunately, I have not seen any eps previous to Kelly and Stuart getting married, so I never saw any eps that mention Luther's bird's name. It's Sunshine, huh? That's cute.
Anyway, that's why I've requested that we stick to eps starting from season two and ending at the Pioneer Bowl. That's the pocket of eps that I've seen.
Having said all of that, the new word is, "joke"
Big Coach Fan 01-14-2003, 06:33 AM Right on about Christine's chain smoking friend Barbara! I had her in mind although I was referring to the episode where Hayden has his nervous twitch and Christine recommends seeing a "witch doctor" to Hayden. Christine says, "well Barbara goes" and Hayden replies, "Barbara is a loon, anyone married five times is a looooon!" (Or something to that effect)
Actually my favorite episode is probably that one.. snowblower & motorcycle...cracks me up!
And now.. joke.. may be where Kelly complains to Coach that the guys in Daubers house sat down to dinner and asked to pass the mashed potatos and as a "joke" Fred passed Stuart! Hayden laughs and says, "Well you said it was a joke."
How about this.. I might get you on this one.. the new word is
"barnacles"
highloon 01-14-2003, 10:57 PM Big Coach Fan, I must admit that firstly, I've never seen the ep with Hayden's nervous twitch. Secondly, I don't recall an ep with the word "barnacles" in it. Would it be okay to ask for a hint? As a reminder, does it fall into that pocket of eps that I mentioned in my earlier post? Is it after Kelly and Stuart's marriage and before the Pioneer Bowl? If so, then I am once again stumped. Anybody else know this one?
Janice 01-15-2003, 01:24 AM I'm stumped!
highloon 01-15-2003, 02:12 AM Okay Big Coach Fan, now you've stumped my good friend, Janice! Have mercy on us and just give us a little hint.:(
Big Coach Fan 01-15-2003, 04:03 AM You MUST see the episode with Haydens nervous twitch... it's excellent! Dauber puts Hayden under using hypnosis!!
Hint for barnacles.. would be Hayden: "Rock the boat, that what it's for!"
Big Coach Fan 01-15-2003, 04:07 AM Also, was the quote I used for "joke" what you had in mind? (About Fred passing Stuart around the table instead of the potatos?)
Another hint on barnacles.... Hayden: What are you? Christine: I'm a warrior!
highloon 01-15-2003, 07:36 PM Regarding the word "joke", the quote I was thinking of was from Hayden: "We're in the middle of practical stupid joke season!", from the ep when Hayden goes too far in teasing Judy. But there have been numerous uses of the word throughout the show's run, as I'm sure you know. I like the quote you chose, too. Good stuff.
Regarding this whole "barnacle" thing, the clues you gave have convinced me that I've never seen this ep, so I'm dead in the water. Maybe Speedbump or Janice can help, now that you've given a few hints.
Calling all Coach fans: Help!
Big Coach Fan 01-17-2003, 05:24 AM Since it's been a couple of days I'll let you know the ep that I was referring to.
It's where Christine goes in to get her raise and is too shy to push to get one. Hayden says she needs to rock the boat because that's what the boats for. Otherwise it just sits there and gets barnacles on it's bottom.
Christine takes Hayden's advice and pushes too far and gets let go by the TV station. Hayden also has to sit in the dunking booth at Judy Watkins fair to raise money for the girls basketball team to travel to Berlin. Hayden drives to Minneapolis and gets Christine her job back explaining that her pushed her. Christine later enters the fair furious at Hayden for taking control and finding out that when she went back to the station mgmt. to talk Hayden had beat her there and already gotten her job back for her. She goes to the fair, gets mad at Hayden for being a control freak and runs a tab at the dunking machine. Dunks Hayden.
Good ep... (Hope that didn't fall in the area that you had not seen)
Big Coach Fan 01-17-2003, 05:26 AM new word... "Latura'
speedbump 01-17-2003, 06:21 PM I think this one was in the Orlando years when Dauber wants to buy a car and an attractive woman shows him the latura (by the way she also plays Penny, Luther's secretary in his very short stint as head coach at Aberdeen College in season 6). Daub goes in looking for something affordable and not so flashy but she shows him a hot-looking red car and says something to the effect of only a special kind of person can drive the latura. I haven't seen them all in Orlando, but I remember this one pretty well.
New word: poop
Big Coach Fan 01-18-2003, 05:52 AM Yep! Actually the car they show as a Latura is one of my favorites. It's an Acura NSX, typically priced around $80 grand.
highloon 01-18-2003, 09:40 PM Big Coach Fan, unfortunately the ep you're referring to was before I started watching the show. Same with the Latura clue. That was after I stopped watching it.
As for "poop" I remember Luther getting angry at Hayden for his unpredictable moodswings, "...you just waltz in here and poop on our parade. Well, I'm sick of it!"
The new word is "shriner"
Big Coach Fan 01-20-2003, 03:37 AM I think I've seen just about every episode.. not sure as to what season each one was in though. .. shriner doesn't ring a bell I'll have to think about that one. ugh.. 60 hour work week is killing me!
speedbump 01-22-2003, 05:57 PM I cannot remember an episode where shriner was used. I'm sure it was, but I don't know who said it and when it was said. I typically don't like to use any clues or hints, so someone else will have to come forward on this one. Good luck.
highloon 01-22-2003, 11:19 PM I hope I'm not jumping the gun here, but I feel it's time to give the answer to "shriner", so we can continue playing.
Remember when Dauber wants a motorcycle and he's considering settling for a mo-ped, instead? While he's sitting on it, he looks at a disgusted Hayden, and asks, "What do you think?" Hayden replies, "I think you look like a shriner!"
Okay, the new word is "bath".
PS. High Janice! Hope all is well with you!
speedbump 01-23-2003, 07:33 PM Thanks for the answer highloon. It's been a while since I've seen that episode when Dauber wants a motorcycle.
Bath comes from one of my favorites, "Homewreckers." After Luther spills grape juice on Christine's new white carpet, he begins to mop up the stain with what he thinks is just an ordinary white towel. Hayden knows it isn't and tries to point this out to Luther, who really has no idea.
"Why does it have a belt?," Luther asks innocently. Hayden says because it's Christine's bath robe.
Poor Luther.
The wreckers titled episodes are among the funniest in the series.
New word: cloying
highloon 01-26-2003, 09:02 PM For this one, "The Burden of the Burleighs" comes to mind: "You are the most overbearing, cloying, suffocating people I have ever met in my entire life!" -Christine (She just couldn't take the Burleighs anymore, and had to let it out, even if it was in the middle of a crowded movie theater)
New word: price
