I don't think it's possible that a raccoon could grow that friggin big, so I would say that a Panda is a bear.

Am I right?

I just read something interesting...

The DNA of Red Pandas resemble the raccoon, while the DNA of the giant Pandas (black) is closer to the bear family.
Hmm. Learn something new every day.

So I guess I was right.

NOW WHAT DID I WIN!

:p

Yea, that is what they're called, but scientists believe they are RELATED to the raccoon, and should be classifed as one. that is what i mean. excuse me for asking

Kingdom- Animalia (Karli is right about that)
Phylum- Chordata
SubPhylum- Vertebrata
Class- Mammalia
Order- Carnivora
Family- Ursidae
Genus- Ailuropoda
Species- melanoleuca

i don't know what half of that means

I know, we are in groups and half to be scientists and prove stuff. Mine is 'Pandas are raccoons'. urs is a different group

Recent DNA analysis indicates that giant pandas are most definately of the bear species although different enough to be put into it's own sub family. All leading authorities now classify the giant panda as a bear and not in the racoon family.

That's an exact quote from this rather elaborate web site:

I thought I heard that Panda's actually weren't bears just like Koalas aren't really bears..

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA Go me!!!

Anyways.... I'll explain since you don't know what half of it means ;) The Kingdom is the Animal Kingdom, seeing as they are not a plant, or some sort of parasitic fungi. The Sub-Phylum is Vertebrata, which means they are Vertebrates, which means they have a backbone. And INVertebrate is a thing with no backbone (It's Latin). The Class is Mammalia, seeing as they are not a fish, reptile, bird, amphibian, etc. The family, genus, and species are well basically self explanitory.

Ursidae means bears. Interesting, ailuropoda=something having to do with cats?? I.e. Ailurophilia/ailurophobia=love/fear of cats.

I think I just noticed something else, why didn't I think of it at the time... Ailuropoda=cat-foot...

Thingies for your report on pandas:

They're big lovable bears which live in Asia whose numbers are dwindling and they have a hard time reproducing. They love to eat grass and bamboo and got funny black markings around the eyes, though not all pandas are black and white. Anyone remember the Brady Kids cartoon? They had these two pandas named Ping and Pong who spoke Chinese all the time. Good luck with your report.:D
