(Disclaimer: I am not criticizing Barry Williams or anyone involved with his book Growing Up Brady for the following inconsistency I noticed. I just want to point out something I noticed myself!)

OK, here goes!

In the book, according to pages 236-237, it is said that "eagle-eyed Mike realize[d] the switch when he notice[d] Jan's wearing her glasses in the new shot--she wasn't wearing them in the original photo."

However, I recently saw this episode, and it was Carol who pointed out the inconsistency!

Are you certain about that? I saw that episode a couple of nights ago. Didn't Mike ask Jan to stay behind with him in the kitchen when the others left so he could ask her about the glasses? Am I cracking up here or what?

The scene goes like this (well, maybe not word-for-word, but close enough):

Carol (looking at the portrait): "Oh Jan, look--you're even wearing your glasses!"

Mike hears this, takes a closer look at the portrait and realizes, "Hey, Jan didn't have those glasses when we had that picture done!" (internal monologue)

Everyone exits to the living room.

Mike: "Jan, just a minute...."

Then he privately asks her about it, and she admits to crashing into and ruining the original. I assume that Carol did not ever know about this exchange, and the 2nd attempt at making the portrait.

Thanks. I thought it was Mike who noticed the inconsistency.
BTW, pretty good recap of dialog from memory. :)

That is what led me to believe that Carol, not Mike, noticed the difference between the two pictures, especially when GUB did not take this into account.

Since Jan wears glasses, I wonder if the episode about her needing them was scripted because Eve Plumb needed them in real life?

Carol did notice Jan was wearing her glasses, but she didn't notice an inconsitency because she never saw the original picture.

Exactly. I think that is what Barry is stating in his book by saying "eagle-eyed Mike noticed the inconsistency"...Carol just noticed Jan wearing glasses. Mike noticed the inconsistency. So, Barry Williams is correct in his book.

Exactly. The whole idea of the picture was to surprise Carol, so she never saw the original, as it was hidden out in the garage (they could have hidden it in a kitchen cabinet, Carol never did anything in there!).

So Carol noticed that Jan was wearing her glasses, but she had no reason to assume that another pic had been taken earlier without her glasses.

And it was Mike who held Jan back in the kitchen while the rest of the family went to the living/dining room.
