View Full Version : When did you start watching Cheers?
DansonQueen 01-02-2003, 06:00 PM I was wondering when everyone here started watching (or being obsessed with) Cheers. I'm only 17, so I wasn't around for the first few years, but I do remember when I was a kid, my parents would watch it, and I would always watch it with them, even though I obviouslt wouldn't get a lot of it. The most memorable part for me was the opening sequence, I would always wonder what excatly the "WE WIN" headline was about. Anyway, when Cheers started on N@N I was skeptical to watch at first, but over one of my breaks from school I remember staying up all night to watch it, and I became instantly hooked again. So I've been familiar with it since maybe 1990, but have only been a die-hard fan since last Winter.

PaulaAbdulFan 01-02-2003, 06:50 PM hmmm,
i started watching cheers when it first aired on nick @ nite.
see, i was really mad:mad: because it took over the threes company timeslot and i was walkin around the house callin cheers a dumb show and stuff! so then my mom got mad and actually made me sit down and watch it! and from the very first eppie i saw(when carla buys a house), i was hooked!
so id just like to thank my mom for me being a cheers freak! hehe;)
(oh and my mom gets mad at me because i talk about cheers and shelley long too much! now whos fault is that mom? hmmm):happyface  :D
HAHAHA. Funny stories. Mine is kind of similar. I remember glimses of Cheers as a wee lad but then again i was only 7. I too was pissed at Cheers when it booted Three's Company back to 11. But when i sat down and watched I loved it. Now i am hooked aswell. And it had a pretty big impact on my George Wendt..........thing(I don't really know what to call it). That's it. Sorry there is no cool story like i was told in my alphabet soup or anything. But hey, i'm here now.
PaulaAbdulFan 01-02-2003, 08:20 PM yes we are very much similar NORM!
i have my Shelley obsession thing.....
and you have your Norm obsession thing.....
hehe! same story different characters
purplefuzzycouch 01-02-2003, 08:34 PM I became hooked on Cheers when last winter they were giving the marathon when it first came on N@N I thought that show sucked.but when I really watched it it was great!
Cheers Fanatic 01-02-2003, 09:43 PM I was really bored this one night, during my sister's birthday sleep over. It was in March sometime, because that's when she has her birthday. So, I had nothing to do, causing me to go into the kitchen and watch the only thing that was on TV... Cheers. The episode was The Stork Brings a Crane, where Cheers celebrates 100 years and Lilith goes into labor. It's been my favorite episode ever since. Do you guys remember the first episode you ever saw?
Well, since that fateful night, I've fallen in love with Cheers and try to watch it every chance I get (that is, when I'm not doing homework, or sleeping). And, I'm always getting yelled at by my folks because they say I'm over-addicted, but can you really be over-addicted to Cheers?
DansonQueen 01-02-2003, 11:06 PM I remember I saw a few episodes at like 10 & 10:30 one night, and thought they sucked, and there was nothing on at 1 and I wanted to stay up (heck, it WAS a vacation) so I wathced the one where Rebecca is at Robin's house, and Sam comes in, and they activate all the alarms and stuff....from that moment on I was hooked.
Funny you all should mention it...I too was like wow Cheers sucks, what's it doing on? I liked Danson from Becker, but I was skeptical about Cheers. Interesting :)
 :guitar:  :bighug:
FOLN@NFan 01-03-2003, 01:22 AM im only 17 too. i mustve watched tons of tv when i was a baby cuz i remember certain parts of alot of sitcoms (esp. from 80's like Full House , Perfect Strangers, Who's the Boss, and Cheers). (now that ive thought about it i used 2 watch MASH, Family Matters and Step by Step too)
then my mom showed me N@N in 1992 (i was only 6!) and i kinda forgot about the other shows lol
i actually never thought about Cheers until one day a couple of yrs ago, i heard a MIDI of the theme on some totally unrelated website. those first few notes made something click in my head cuz i just thought of "Cheers". i looked it up online, remember nothing about it, found out it was in syndication locally and watched it. rememebered no characters, thought the bar was alot smaller (turns out I was thinking of the bar in Taxi ?? lol), but when i saw the theme i kept thinking (hey i remember that picture. and that one...and that one). i actually think some of the closeup pics in the theme used 2 scare me haha. and i remembered none of the words or anything about the song at all besides those first few notes
neway i kept watching it, found out N@N was going 2 start airing it and ive been watchin ever since...again lol
my memories of Cheers from when i was little:
what i thought was Sam talking 2 ppl on the door-side of the bar, then tripping on a mop (this ended up being the Taxi bar scene i remembered...dont know y i thought it was Cheers)
the first few notes of the theme, and vaguely some of the pics from it

Central Perk 01-03-2003, 10:22 AM Well..In about the fall of 2001 I heard that Family Ties and Cheers were coming to N@N, I was excited to see Family Ties but not Cheers. One day I finally watched it and liked it...and I still do.
80sSitcomNostalgic 01-05-2003, 05:01 AM Wow, after reading these posts I feel very old.
I started watching "Cheers" when it was on Thursdays at 8 PM Central, like around 1984.
The show occupied the slot that "Seinfeld" and now "Will & Grace" hold.
I recall studying for my ACT's while watching "Cheers".
Brian Damage 01-06-2003, 06:41 PM I started watching Cheers since it started on NBC. I remember hating the show in the beginning. However, as time went on, I became obsessed with the show by the time it had its finale.
SitcomSweetie44 01-06-2003, 06:47 PM Let's see; I started watching "Cheers" when it was in the Rebecca years. I must have been really young, but I remember it came on and I would watch it every now and then. Then, our local WB picked it up, but I didn't really watch that either. When N@N showed the marathon, I didn't watch that either, but after the marathon was over, I caught the first episode. It was "cute" and the next episode I watched was the one when Diane asks Sam to marry her because of her mother. After that, I was hooked, to see if Sam and Diane would end up together. The Rebecca years were alright, but the Diane years were better.
Janice 01-06-2003, 08:15 PM I started watching Cheers during its original run. These were the days of the dream NBC lineup. Cheers, The Cosby Show, Night Court, and Family Ties.
I loved Cheers from the onset. I fell in love with the characters, the bar, the storylines, and all the laughs and drama that grew out of it.
After Shelley Long left, I lost interest, and I didn't start watching again until the show landed on N@N last year, so I'm seeing the Rebecca episodes for the first time.
Great cast, great show. This show made history. I also love how it's based in my hometown of Boston.
CarJackSnyder 03-12-2003, 05:54 PM well mine is funny. it was last summer and my aunt (23) was staying with us. she loved watching cheers. that is all she talks about! i hated it at the time. one night when i saw the episode where sam prposes to diane and she said "no". i fell in love again. at that time the cosby show was my favorite show ever. that was until i saw cheers! now i talk about it all the time and my aunts gets mad because i talk about it to much!!! i think she is jealous because she can't hold her eyes open long enough to watch it at nite on N@N!!! LOL!!! i stay up till 2:00 on weekends!!! on weeknights i stay up til 11:00!!! my aunt, mom, and da think i am crazy because i talk about cheers and SHELLEY LONG way to much!!! all i say is well my aunt made me a cheers freak and my mom gets mad at my aunt!!! i start cracking up!!! one night last week i was watching cheers and all of a sudden my mom heard me laughing from all the way upstairs!! i literally almost peed on myself:lol: LOL!!!!
Chocoholic 03-12-2003, 06:04 PM My Cheers-obsessed cousin got me hooked on Cheers about 10 years ago. We'd often watch Cheers, Wings, and some other shows together.
Cheers and Wings will both be together again on N@N real soon! :happyface :happyface :happyface :happyface :happyface Those are two of my all-time fave shows.
BTW, I used to post here as WingsFan, but I changed my s/n to Snoopy a few days ago.
PhylB 03-16-2003, 07:13 PM I started watching Cheers when it first started hundreds of years ago! I was just a young thing then and now I'm 40 and I can safely say I was there at the start! Me and my boyfriend watched the first one way back and thought hmm..not sure but stuck with it and now we're married and have every single episode on VHS tape! Our kids love the show now and the tapes are wearing thin through over use. I even have Norm and Cliffs autographs. Cheers is still aired on Paramount TV here in the UK every night and it runs from the 1st show right through to the last and then begins all over again. And I still watch them, in the faint hopes there'll be an episode I might've missed! I know I'm an anorak but Cheers is simply the best American telly has to offer and nothing's come close since it left the airwaves! Long live the cast of Cheers! And give us a re-union show please!!:D
I started watching in 1988, when the show first entered syndication.
onefortheroad 04-24-2003, 11:51 AM when i was little my parnets and grandparents used to watch it but after my bed time, but i remember laying in bed and hearing the theme song, so i started sneaking downstairs and watching the beginning. I also remember watching some of the episodes of the last season in it's original run, and i started again as soon as it came to nick at nite. It also airs on a boston local channel at 7:30 PM so i watch that also.
Skywalker 04-24-2003, 12:58 PM I didn't watch the show when it was still on NBC but I knew that theme song. I watched casually in 1997 but I only recall one episode where Carla goes to her husbands funeral (not sure of the name but I think he played hockey or was a zambonie driver). About 3 weeks ago I was bored and looked at schedules on the internet and thought I'd give Cheers a try since they were airing the pilot. Now I'm hooked.
DianeChambers87 04-24-2003, 04:32 PM hello everyone(<--- just thought i start you off the Diane way lol),
I have been watching nick @ nite every night for 7 years. I'll be sixteen in exactly three months (yesterday my b-day is on the 23rd) so i never got to see Cheers when it was on NBC and unfortunately do not have any recoleccions on remembering the theme song because my parents never saw it. I was really into the cosby show in the fall of 2001 and spring of 2002 and i hated Cheers because it took over threes company. Then one day during last summer when the "Camp Nick @NITe" marathons began it was sunday and I was working as a camp counselor the next day. it was around ten and i could NOT find anything to watch so i tune into nick @ Nite and i see the "coming up next Camp Nick@Nite Cheers the diane years" so i go ughhh...whatever theres nothing ELSE to watch i'll just watch it and it will probably make me go to sleep. So i am happy to say my first Cheers experience ever was the first episode "give me a ring sometime" lets just say that after 5 minutes i was hooked. I didn't sleep until 2 am that night, because of how much I ADORE Each episode and from then on i have been a CHEERS fAN it is almost going to be a year, and whats really weird is that i think of Cheers or laugh about Cheers (to myself even if I haven't seen an episode that day) EVERY SINGLE DAY for a year. and i LOVE IT!
and i started to watch the rebecca years after this years or well last falls full run of the diane years, and i have to say i love them too!! (although i prefer the diane years)!!!!

TomServo99 04-25-2003, 08:50 PM I started watching about, uhhhhhhhhh....two years ago. Wow!!! My first episode would have to be "The Crane Mutiny", or some episode near that. Being that I'm only 12 (yessir), it reminds me of alot of my sixth grade year, mostly of a one vacation, as I was starting to watch it. It was the beginning of the Robin Colcord era. That one week was what really got me hooked. Ahhhhh....
