I'm sorta hesitating to write this
since since it might be considered
sexist, but I wouldn't disapprove
of any women writing they watch
partially because Dick Van Dyke's
a sexy guy. (In fact, I wish they
would, nice guy--not just bad boy-- types should be bumped up to sexy sometimes.) Anyway, I always thought
Laura was just about sexiest woman
I've ever seen on TV. Still do. But,
I gotta say, has anybody ever noticed
Elly May on those b&w episodes of
the Beverly Hillbillies?! Talk about
"undercupping"!!! I can't believe
anyone at CBS actually meant anything
should be done about Mary's Capris
after seeing Elly May's jeans. (I still think it was dresses with Mary.) But, (golly gee, Batman) that
Donna Douglas had some figure. If
she wasn't the greatest girl in jeans
(Laura wins in dresses) of all time
I don't know who was. And I think
she did it reluctantly (Donna was/is
very religious) as she sometimes even
turned face forward in scenes so as to not have her back to the camera and wore jeans much less as the show went on. (She probably thought it was
also too big.) So, c'mon, 'fess up,
someone else must have noticed some of this too. Are these the two greatest figures ever on TV? And the
DVD show supposedly caught on their
first summer of reruns because they
were put following the Beverly Hillbillies. And, I guess, it did
help the the success of the two
shows. I've read one critic said Elly May's done more for jeans in 6 months than anything else in the last fifty years. I don't know who wins, but gosh these were two good looking women in that department. Mary's
Capris and Elly May's jeans were
really just...wow. And all in
the staid early 60s. "Wow" again.

Samme,
We're both incredibly brave, or a few cards short of a deck to post this openly on a female dominated board. Ladies, please understand, we're just a couple 'o guys talkin'. Here goes.
Man, o man, what Elly Mae did for tight jeans! If I'm not mistaken, they weren't considered fashionable back then. It's doubtful that they were even considered lady like. Donna Douglas was definitely on a par with Mary Tyler Moore; young, sexy, and provocatively dressed. Swingin' Chicks of the 60's! (http://www.swinginchicks.com/main.htm)
I suppose the idea was to portray Elly as a poor, country girl who didn't own many clothes, and to make it look as if she grew into the jeans, and therefore must've had them a while. They fit like a glove, but they weren't worn down anywhere. That sparked a trend that survives to this day. Daisy Duke just took it a little further.
One comparison I would offer though, is that Elly's jeans, especially in those days, were pretty stiff. Although they may hug and show the (form) beautifully, they don't appear to be very, shall I say, inviting (Sorry!) Laura's Capri pants, on the other hand, appeared to be either double knit or stretchable cotton. They conveyed the softness of her (form) wonderfully, and seemed to be perfect for wearing around the house with or without Rob at home.
For me, the appeal of Laura Petrie goes way beyond looks. It's the way she carries herself. The way she looks at Rob, and speaks to him. The way she cries. The sound of her voice. How affectionate she is. She truly was designed by Carl Reiner to be the perfect wife.
However, on the looks of the two, Elly and Laura, I suppose it comes down to personal preferences. Blonde, or brunette? Tall, or short? Thin, or not so thin? Among other things (I'm not *that* brave)!
