I have many shows on vhs and I store most of them in these small tape holders with drawers that hold so many tapes. But some people on here have hundreds of things on tape. How could you possibly have room for all those tapes. What do you do?

I seperate mine with those oak video cabinets. One of my spare bedrooms is used to store the cabinets which store the videos. They are divided by Cartoons, Sitcoms, Dramas, Movies, Made for Tv Movies, Specials and Old School Wrestling.

It's definitely not easy, LOL. I have a TV stand where I place the tapes I'm using everyday, or every week taping, and the rest goes in this closet, which has two shelves, practically full. I have at least 200 (probably even more) tapes. A ton are doubles and old ones, that I need to go through and probably throw away. I don't even know what's on half of them. I never seem to be able to get time to go through them, so I'm taking a large break from tape trading (After January) and getting started labeling my tapes.

A good way to cut down on the ton of tapes is edit out commercials. Not from network broadcasts (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.) but from cable reruns (TBS, TV Land, etc.). I can fit about 23 half hour episodes onto an 8 hour tape compared to 16. I mean, that may not seem like a lot, but it is and it really saves. I'm doing that now. It's tough work, but well worth it, IMO.

Actually, I think the Sony VCR has CommercialAdvance, so it automatically pasuses during commercials during timer recordings. But, I have heard Sony VCRs aren't that hot...

As for storage, we have basically a whole (small) closet full!! On the shelves, and a wheeled cart - totaly full. These are about half purchased home-video movies, and half old recorded stuff and home videos...the ones we use for daily recording stuff are always by the TV and in the storage area under the TV...all the brands of tape advise to store themon their side, like a book on a bookshelf, which is how we have them...

I have mine in big boxes stacked (I know that's the worst way to store them, but other ways would take up too much space), on shelves, and in the closet. I have ~ 1100 tapes.

Boy I should be so lucky to have a few hundred tapes. My collection has grown to over 2000 tapes. I have a shelfing unit in my living room that stands from floor to ceiling and each shelf has been designed to pull out with my tapes going four rows deep. It works out to about 120 tapes per shelf. I've always wondered about the incredible weight that this creates. I've since gone out and purchased more shelfing because my first one is completely filled. And not to mention the number of tapes scattered through out the house which still need to be catalogued. And now I'm moving into the DVDs. When will this madness end??????

I've got roughly 550 tapes. Here's the breakdown:

-2 wallracks (38 each)
-one wooden hutch (150 and counting)
-wooden shelves (I think about 225 or so and counting)
-small set of shelves (60-70)
-stereo cabinet (about 20)

Peace!

God my house is a nightmare mess of tapes. I have a spare room that has rows and rows of tapes stacked 25 high 3 and 4 rows deep. I have a 5 shelf bookcase that has tapes on it 2 and 3 rows deep. They are in my closets, in my living room, on my stairs...some have numbers, some don't, some don't even have labels (which of course is biting me in the butt now that I'm trying to log everything I have!). I rent so I can't really build anything custom for my tapes but someday when I own a home I'm going to have to have a room for nothing but tapes - floor to wall shelves I want!

I have 100's of tapes, that are stored in a variety of different ways. Some are in a book-case, others are in boxes...
I have way too many, and one of my problems has been not labeling all of them, so that I know what's on them.
I save just about everything...bad idea, I guess.
I should count them all. Maybe I do have over 1000. Nice to know others have lots of tapes as well. What I'm having a problem with is that the quality of some of them is not too good, and I'm reluctant to throw them out. My VCR is fairly new, but the tracking on these tapes is pretty bad. Does anyone know of any particular brand of VCR that does better with older tapes?

I label my boxes on the short end with titles printed off on the computer in large lettering so I can see them from across the room (cover with clear packaging tape). Then I stack them so the titles show. You can get lots more on the shelves doing it this way.

Since I'm converting to DVDs, I'm wondering how in the world to store them. The teeny tiny plastic holders for DVDs are sooooo thin you can't put titles on them for easy reference. Do I have my head in the sand, or is there some system people with massive amounts of DVDs are storing theirs?

By 'teeny tiny plastic holders for DVD's', do you mean the CD like case the DVD-r's come in? Or do you mean real DVD cases like the ones store bought DVDs come in? I use cases like the one shown here:

I get lots and lots of book cases. I"m always looking for those at yard sales and can get them for around 5 dollars. I keep my dark shadows tapes that is like a hunred tapes under my bed. I had a long box that was perfect for them and fit under the bed. I got some cool video labels off ebay. I'm going to make a picture for the label. It's going to be fun to do. Especially when I can make my own pictures straight from the video.

As Officer Toody from "Car 54, Where Are You?" would say, "Ooooh ooooh!" I didn't know they sold those nifty boxes! I'm going to be keeping my eye out for them on eBay.

Yes, by "teen tiny" boxes I'm referring to those CD like cases the
DVD-Rs come in.

Great idea! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I'll hit the 600 mark soon. Thank god, someone said they had 2000 because I was reading all the "I have a hundred or so" and thinking "Oh my I have two many!!" I have my tapes in an old metal file cabinet I got a garage sale. I've always been kinda nervous the metal of the cabinet could somehow demagnitize my tapes or something. Am I crazy?

Put it this way... my kids got into their head to count our videos shortly before we started tape trading. I'm embarrassed to say that we had 500 at that point. Now, we must have 750 or so. :eek4:

You're Welcome! :)

The cases come in other colors besides black, I've seen blue, red, and green. There are also 'double cases' where you can hold two DVD's in one case. This will save up a lot of room while storing them. The cheapest place I have seen the cases is at Ebay. But there are sites to buy them from as well. They sell them where I buy my DVD-r's at :

I have over 3,000 tapes in my collection of videos. I have 29 boxes filled and currently working on my 30th box.

I put the video tapes into these storage boxes that I bought from Walmart. They come with a lid and only cost $3.30 per storage box and I think they are from rubermaid. It isn't a bad idea and then I stack the boxes in my closet and number the boxes so I know what I have inside of each box. All the tapes are labeled that are in the boxes. However I do have other tapes that are not counted in the 3,000 tapes on a shelf in my closet.

I mostly record in SP Mode for better quality. Taping in EP mode is horrible with tons of tracking problems. I used to use that taping speed when I first started recording back in 1992.

I have all of my tapes (about 2000) in plastic Amaray cases (see-thru) and I stand them upright on the shelves. I have one spare room in my house just for the tapes and other media. It's crazy. Anyway, for over 20 years I've kept them free of dust and temperature extremes...they have all held up. I am now in the process of converting to DVD. I should be done in about 4.5 years! LOL!
