Well, yes, Eddie was conspicuous in his absence in the second season.

My theory is that he left the show. Maybe his voice was changing or something. Maybe the producers didn't know what to do with him. In the third season, the show moves from CBS to ABCand maybe someone there saw something in the early Eddie that they could tweak into the later Eddie. Eddie really came back as a very different character. In the early season on CBS, Eddie was not the wise guy he was in later eps. I had thought that maybe his character "evolved" into that, but now that i saw the second season again with Eddie missing in so many eps, i figured it was not a mistake. Now in the third season, he is coming back and his character is the mature wise cracking Eddie we all love.
