It was sad when Ally was talking about Eddy dieing soon since he was getting old, then when she leaves Martin hugs Eddy. I'm sorry that was so touching.
I don't know what episode I was talking about but it was the one where Ally's hamster dies.

I saw that episode and you're right, it was very touching. It just goes to show you how much Martin loves Eddie.

I know I felt so bad for Martin after that because he really does care for Eddie...if something happened to Eddie I'd be sad too he steals the show whenever he's on!

OMG you know how sad it would be if the final episode of Frasier had Eddy die. That would be so sad.

To be honest, now that I think about it, Eddie IS getting old. He didn't exactly start the show off as a pup.

Yes, Eddie should be getting on a bit by now. I think that that particular scene was put there to remind us that dogs don't live forever, and neither will Eddie. :( It looked as though Martin was realising that for the first time, which is what made it so touching.
However, little dogs like Jack Russel Terriers (I have two!) can live for quite a long time, at least a bit longer than larger dogs anyway, so there's no reason why Eddie couldn't last the length of the whole series. Remember that Martin got him after Frasier had come to Seattle, so he will have been a young dog when the show began.
On the other hand, Moose (the dog actor!) is now old enough for retirement, and I read that he has recently been replaced by another dog for the first time. This hints that they are willing to continue with Eddie. It's a shame they have a new dog, but the good news is that the new one is actually Moose's son! Can't remember his name unfortunately, but I think it's great that the role has passed down the family, and that Moose is getting a well-earned rest after 10 years. :)
