And add a kmart board hehe Nate mark55 12-20-2002, 02:16 PM how can he add a kmart board? this site is called Sitcoms Online, and last time i checked, kmart was not a sitcom. anyway, i don't know how tj could make the board any better. IMO it is fine the way it is. I don't think i "start fights" but i know i add to them a great deal...one way I can make the board better is to tone down my posts and not be such a hot head. I think the question should be WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPROVE THIS PLACE Brett Ferino 12-20-2002, 02:23 PM I find what you posted about the KMart board. That would be cool, but it aint a sitcom. It's a department store with over 100,000 locations worldwide! A Flaming Stick 12-20-2002, 02:25 PM If i were TJ id change the site to a site for masochists and sadists. or sadomasochists. and id have sub boards for bands that sing about/support masochism. and id change the font to red and the background to black. la10424 12-20-2002, 02:29 PM there are a few people i'd want to get rid of. but i'm not naming names Janice 12-20-2002, 02:30 PM Originally posted by A Flaming Stick If i were TJ id change the site to a site for masochists and sadists. or sadomasochists. and id have sub boards for bands that sing about/support masochism. and id change the font to red and the background to black. However, if you go to TAGS and Sanford & Son etc, you'll see posts by people saying 'Don't buy from so and so because I sent a money order and I haven't received anything.' I suggested that before on the S & S board, but I don't think TJ did the feedback route. I'd love to have a Star Trek board, but that will never happen. I just don't think it'll get that many hits. If your browser has a hard time using https, you need to ditch it. Security breaches happen frequently, and the fewer security precautions you take, the more likely your information will be stolen. Then, with that accomplished, I'd say that raising the size limitation for avatars, at least up to 500K should be done. 100K was a lot years ago, but now it's nothing. And, of course that additional bandwidth will cost TJ money, so I don't see "pay to play" as being out of the question, so long as it is assessed upon all members uniformly. Maybe something like your first 100 posts every month are free, but thereafter you have to prepay something like 15 cents per post? Monetization would mean updating this site, using a safer server, better looking avatars, and possibly curtailing some members who seem to have diarrhea of the keyboard. He should go for it! GentlemanJim 01-03-2022, 03:29 PM And I am against raising the size limit for avatars as well. That would just cause threads to load even slower, we don't need a bunch of giant avatars here. Just to elaborate a bit. Having more bandwidth would allow larger avatars, as well as attachments, to load much faster. I wouldn't be recommending the larger image cap size without the added bandwidth to support it. Additionally, with web sourced graphics, the image only downloads (over the wire) once per session, and thereafter runs from your local cache. So it's not like every avatar would have to squeeze through the pipe everytime you open a new thread. And, I'm not saying the dimensional size of the images need to increase, I feel the current 150 X 150 pixels is adequate. the size limitation that I find constraining is the 100K file size limitation. And, the fee structure that I propose to help TJ pay for the added capacity, is peanuts. I mentioned a 100 post per month "free" allotment, with 15 cents per post for any amount over that. So, if someone posts 2000 posts per year, which IMO is a lot, that would put them only 800 posts above their free allowance. 800 x .15 = $120 for the year, divided into 12 months, is ONLY $10/month. A relative entertainment bargain considering you'll be getting all my posts included. ;) And think about it from the other aspect, if some of these "freewheeling" keyboard mashers had a cost associated with their contributions,... perhaps they'd be more inclined to think first, before posting, and all the "You suck! ....oh yeah? And while mentioning this a long time member has been raked over the coals a lot here...he hurts no one and is a punching bag for some here. It's called voicing view points aka opinions. GentlemanJim 01-03-2022, 08:31 PM Did I miss interpretation here, I didn't see any personal attacks. The "personal attacks" I specifically mention there,.. are given as the justification for the recommendations that I made earlier about curbing abusive behavior, and how "pay to play" might rein some of that in by forcing people to consider if it's worth their dime+. (you frequently are on the receiving end of this type abuse, so your inability to appreciate what I am saying is somewhat bewildering) Perhaps you are confusing that with my secondary observations about Icecream belittling 1.)my tastes in avatars and 2.)his spurious claims that I was trying to make some kind of power grab. The thought processes while separate, and distinct,...are still very much accurate. icecream 01-03-2022, 08:44 PM I should be able to leave pages open here if I check at commercials without irritating flashing coming through. Well, don't ever let anybody claim that I'm insensitive. Just for you I changed my avatar. Only 17 KB, so I've got plenty of headroom left to work with. Now, about all these cats you've got laying around? :happyface GentlemanJim 01-04-2022, 01:50 PM From what I understand the ad revenue correlates to the number of clicks on the site. More posts -> more pages -> more clicks, so from a monetary standpoint any system that discourages posting would do more harm than good. Imagine having TWO streams of revenue? Pay per post AND pay per click... How could that be bad? But hey, in the spirit of compromise, perhaps a hybrid solution might be best? Other free forums have implemented "premium" memberships, for an annual subscription fee. Delphi for instance has two paying tiers on top of free basic. Their top tier, called "Delphi Plus" gives their subscribers hosted space for like graphics storage, an account specific email address, search enabled back to the beginning of time, special hosting privileges, as well as other perks and bling, all for a fee of $45.00 annual. Maybe TJ might consider a sitcomsonline + membership, where for an annual fee we could have like 2 MB of avatar cap, some local storage, things like that? You know, for the members willing to acknowledge the extra value of such service? JamesG 01-04-2022, 01:51 PM Since the suggestion of payment was brought up, I was wondering on how a tier system would work? The more money you pay means the more perks you get. Free means you get the basics like 50 free posts per month and you can see other posts. $1.00 a month allows you 100 posts per month and you can see other posts. $5.00 a month allows you 300 posts per month (rollover posts into the next month are allowed) and you can post pictures and videos. $10.00 a month and higher allows you access to the exclusive VIP Lounge where only paying members are permitted. RetroGuy2000 01-04-2022, 02:28 PM Now I can't read GJ's posts without imagining a bad Russian accent, with "Moose and Squirrel". ;) opus 01-04-2022, 02:35 PM Keep the site free. Tier systems like the + he mentioned only work for nationally well known sites that stream TV shows and movies. Pathetic to have a message board that gets a lot less traffic anyway than the famous streamers to even consider changing to that, activity on this site would get a whole lot less than it even is now. Jim has complained about my slamming this proposal of his, but I do it so TJ can see all the angry members here like me that will bring out who haven't seen this thread. I haven't thought about those cartoons in ages. I think having a premium/for pay section might be a good idea. It would be additional revenue for TJ. What additional groups/subjects would you suggest for the premium section? Regarding the post count issue; I've never understood the allure of it myself. Regarding storage space, maybe TJ could consider deleting the posts of people that he's banned over the years. They aren't coming back under the original names, so why should their verbiage be preserved? GentlemanJim 01-04-2022, 11:52 PM I think having a premium/for pay section might be a good idea. It would be additional revenue for TJ. What additional groups/subjects would you suggest for the premium section? The possibilities are endless, really. I've seen forum sites that allow everyone to post, but you have to be a paying premium member to create polls, just as one example. Or they might bundle a freemail account, so that you could be shotzette@SitcomsOnline.com for example. And other perks like larger limits on image sizes, some forums have limited the ability to use html in your posts to paying members as well. But mostly, and I'm being 100% honest here, the motivation that started me on this was noticing there are several members who seem to exist JUST to insult the people who think differently from the way they think. And it just got me to thinking that the main thing enabling them being the ability to fling insults is free. If you could impose some cost on that, make it so they have to think to themselves "is this really worth a quarter just to insult them again for the 99th time this month?"...make them think before spewing more vitriol....then this would be a better place, and I would enjoy myself more here. That's really it "What could TJ do to improve this site to my liking"? being the thread title... I thought about it, and gave it my best shot. All the dramaqueening from some members about me trying to seize control of something I have no business getting involved in, is just paranoid excelsior to my way of thinking. "If anyone complains, then charge them double"...LOL! GentlemanJim 01-05-2022, 12:06 AM And really, ..people finding priority to insult my avatar just because they object to my proposal for pay2play, goes a long way to proving my observations above are well grounded on fact, and not upon supposition. opus 01-05-2022, 12:15 AM And really, ..people finding priority to insult my avatar just because they object to my proposal for pay2play, goes a long way to proving my observations above are well grounded on fact, and not upon supposition. TJ 01-06-2022, 11:05 PM Some of these ideas have already been implemented over the years. Some of them aren't very practical. I would never add a chat room. Discord and social media have killed the activity on many forums. This software has a donation system, but it looks a bit complex to set up. I would have to create new usergroups. I don't think I would want it to look like Facebook with the like button or like Reddit with the up/down vote arrows. I probably won't make any major changes or change the software anytime soon. You could say there has been some drama and fireworks in the past. I guess it's alright when there's intelligent debate. We could do without the personal attacks and insults. Some people have said it's relatively peaceful at times. It's definitely not for everybody. It might be time for a name change. Maybe Politics and Current Events/Other Controversies. TJ 05-08-2022, 02:30 PM One improvement that I think would be really nifty would be if we had the ability to up-vote and down-vote posts, similar to what you see on imgur or Reddit. Especially if you could go back and vote on older posts of members having like 13,000+ total posts to choose from. I don't think there's any built-in option or modifications for this vBulletin version (see https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=285872&highlight=reddit). I'm reluctant to make any big changes or to switch to other forum software. I will never understand the appeal and popularity of Reddit. It's impossible to follow any threads that have a lot of posts. All of the threads within threads. It's not a real community like a traditional forum. It's just hundreds and thousands of people adding their comments. I don't know how people can spend so much time on there. Dude111 05-08-2022, 05:52 PM You can stop holding your breath. A Health/Wellness board is never going to happen. There might be a time when the Politics/COVID-19 board is closed. It's not really worth the aggravation it brings. Why not buddy?? I think a health base would be quite good.... Me and Carole can put GOOD stuff on that base! Caroline13 05-08-2022, 09:37 PM You could say there has been some drama and fireworks in the past. Well, we know the politics got the way it went during covid, what I and many believed what went on and what the group here believed and wouldn't hear it any other way. I consider myself to be conservative and liberal depending on the issues. I'm just now filling out my state Primary ballot and since this state is a Hard Leaning Dem state, I fear Newsom won't be taken down. I voted for the Man trying to do that. Caroline13 05-08-2022, 09:51 PM Why not buddy?? I think a health base would be quite good.... Me and Carole can put GOOD stuff on that base! I have been studying healing for so long that I'm filled with info on "how to heal thyself" and I'm not talking talking pharma drugs, as I avoid them....but using stuff that is in one's kitchen cabinet and many other remedies. But, it seems members here don't give a darn about healing a health issue,,,,but maybe they are all immortal and their bodies won't break down or decay..... Sure glad the other newer groups I;ve joined embrace health issues. GentlemanJim 05-09-2022, 02:08 PM I will never understand the appeal and popularity of Reddit. I was just using it as an example for the merit/demerit ratings system. I've participated at other forums that had merit/demerit ratings system, and the demerit potential really does seem to moderate the behavior of the folks who are image conscious. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the frame work you have here. The holiday decor gets a little gaudy at times, but thankfully that doesn't last forever. :) GentlemanJim 05-09-2022, 02:14 PM BTW, I sort of suspect the lack of continuity at Reddit, is one of the things that appeal to the hosts. "Problem" rants can disappear into the mix much easier, due to the lack of organization. A ship of fools, lost at sea type environment harder to organize real trouble 1960'sTVfan 05-09-2022, 05:43 PM Home Theater Forum has an option that allows users to "react" to other members posts. The choices are: like, disagree, love, insightful, agreed, appreciate, haha, and sad. This seems to work pretty well. TVLegend 05-09-2022, 05:58 PM Why not buddy?? And not everyone will agree with you and Carole’s “worldly”, “sophisticated” advice. Dude111 05-10-2022, 01:20 AM Ah man!! The holiday themes haven't been locked in for the last several years.
