*Melissa* 12-19-2002, 11:03 AM What are some of the words that people use that are unique to your area? For example, where I live people say "yoonz" instead of "you all", and they say "Jumbo" instead of bologna. We also say "pop" instead of soda, but I know there's a lot of regions that use the word "pop".
Chocoholic 12-19-2002, 11:29 AM We don't recognize the letter "R". We also use "wicked" to mean cool.
la10424 12-19-2002, 11:59 AM where i live a toboggan is a hat
1strunfan 12-19-2002, 02:03 PM I hate to admit it, but alot of people around here use "yoonz" too. But, you know the Jeff Foxworthy thing about how rednecks talk? Well, he could have gotten that from listening to conversations around here. We use "pop" "heck" "dang it" "crud" "dad gum it" and I'm sure you don't really want to hear too much more. Oh, and "colder than a blue nosed gopher"
Yeah, I am from the "sticks" or "boonies" as we like to call it.
sami dg 12-19-2002, 02:20 PM Here in Alabama ive noticed that we like to put r's where they dont belong. Like " I need to warsh clothes" or have you ever been to Hawaiir? We dont say "pop" but everytime of cola is a "drank". There are a lot more but I dont have all day..lol.
la10424 12-19-2002, 02:43 PM have you ever heard anyone say "you're grinning like a jack ass eating briers" we say that all the time here in NC
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 12-19-2002, 02:45 PM I live in the South.. South Carolina... we say ''ya'll'' and a lot of people throw R's in there where they dont' belong, including my self, yes, i admit... like 'yeller' and instead of "I have already done that" we say "i done got it"
Ya haw.
sami dg 12-19-2002, 02:46 PM Ive never heard that but I have heard "meaner than a snaggle toothed rattlesnake"...lol
sami dg 12-19-2002, 02:47 PM JoJoJoJoJo I used to live in S.C also I lived in Charleston and the people there have a language all their own!
1strunfan 12-19-2002, 02:48 PM     That is hillarious!!! I've never heard that before.
We don't sound as good as it looks on here, though. I don't really know how to type how we say things. For instance: Hotter than a two dollar pistol would sound like "hot'r na toodolr pistl."
AnaheimPMWitch 12-19-2002, 03:00 PM I'm sure theres alot of Oregon slang but the one I KNOW is we say Pop instead of Soda
Mossopp 12-19-2002, 03:35 PM There are about a million and 1 Scots words that I could post here to confuse you all but it'd take me all day. :D
Ugh, it's neither pop nor soda...it's coke. Dang, it's ALL coke-you just have to specify what kinda coke it is. Pop and soda is foreign talk-just plain weird.

I live in NC! We do have some crazy slang! Now ALOT of Northern people live down here! In my class, only 2 of us talk with a southern drawl! That would be me and Beth!:happyface
My sister got these!
la10424 12-19-2002, 04:10 PM a bunch of people i know (including myself) say "ah-ight" instead of saying it correctly "All right"
i have one of the worst southern accents, it's unbelievable. i think i'm getting a little better though.
here are a few slang words i use all the time
yall
over yander
yella
ah-ight
aint
probly
1strunfan 12-19-2002, 04:36 PM la0919 I feel like I know you. It is so weird. I could talk to you and we could totally understand each other without saying Huh? all the time. But, I don't notice that I have a southern accent. I wish I did. I like to hear people talk who have a true southern drawl.

Oh my gawd.... I use 'wicked' like 36804 times a day. Everyone in MA does. It's funny cause when you talk to someone outside of state and go "It's wicked fun!" they look at you like your a moron.
fr00ti 12-19-2002, 05:48 PM Uh well I say "Gaa Lee" and "Woller in it" and "Daaaang" alot. Can you tell I'm from alabama?

Yeah, I am from the "sticks" or "boonies" as we like to call it. I have some very close relatives in Oklahoma. And I've visited several times. I love it there! I grew up in Iowa and then moved to California. Oklahoma is much today like it was in Iowa when I was a kid.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-19-2002, 06:46 PM Up here in NH, we dont really have our own language. Umm...I use the term whicked a lot too, and I think most people say soda. I say coke though. And if I go to a TacoBell (or wherever its Pepsi, not Coke) I still call it coke. Oh, but a lot of people from the Lawrence Mass area say meangya a lot- which like, I say every 2 seconds. Junior year, me and my friend Amanda were talking and we had a sub. We said Meangya, and the subs like.. you guys grow up from Lawrence? LOl. She did, I just got it from my parents. We're the only 2 families who say it in every sentence in Danville though LOl. Actually, a lot of people dont even know what Meangya means.
White_Daisy 12-19-2002, 06:54 PM See, here's my theory....I got the idea from my physics book and I figured that this could apply here too
When you yawn, the person next to you also yawns to equalize (is that a word?) air pressure. Now, the North doesn't use R's, so they all float down South and they use too many to equalize usage of R's.

you might have something there:lol:
Titania 12-19-2002, 08:22 PM well....in philly they slur a lot of words today and theres a ton of less than wonderful slang...out here everyone talks like katherine hepburn- stupid main line. According to friends on the west coast people from around here sound more british.
thats a little slang in itself "the main line"..ugh.
we call soda- SODA unlike western pa
and no one says "ya'll or "aint"
"the city" is philly
and philly is never "philadelphia"
"the shore" is new jersey
"do south street" - go clubbing
"the vern" is the small town i live in
"you alls" - y'all, all of you
"frappe"- milkshake
oh, and we pronounce pecan differently but its hard to explain.

I say "cracking" a lot. It means basically the same thing as wicked - brilliant, top, awesome.
"Oh man - that's cracking, mate!" :D :D
~*Hannah_Lee*~ 12-21-2002, 12:40 PM Ok, I'm sure that if any of you people came to my hometown, we would throw your ears for a loop. I live in the sticks of Alabama, population 800 tops, no joke. We dont use a lot of slang, but we sure can murder some regular English words. Dont get me wrong, everyone from Alabama has a accent, but we have that times 10. Example: Batteries, to the older people around here is, Battries. Yeah, forget that first "e" cuz you will never hear it!"Over yonder" could descibe anything from the neighbors' house to Georgia. And the words pop and soda are never EVER used. It's all coke, then you just specify which one. Of course there are so few people around here we could probably tell ya what the other one likes to drink anyway. Lordy Mercy, is a common term among the elderly. And as for the guys' fashion sense around here: A dixie outfitters shirt, camo pants, and hunting boots! Oh yeah!
DarkBouchard 12-21-2002, 12:53 PM in notes, like a year ago, i hated writing 'probably' so, i put it down to prolly. lots of people at my school use it now... also, I say 'whichever' instead of 'whatever'. it's something different, and if some1 else starts using it, i'll confront them (i mean at my school). but, if a whole bunch of people started saying it, i would just start something else...

I say 'cracking' every once in a while. I don't know why, I just came up with it one day. People said I sounded like I was from Australia though. Hmmmmm.

White_Daisy 12-23-2002, 12:19 PM I don't think we have much slang. We just use the same slang that New York City uses since we're so close by. By the way, Babes_Cat, I love your signature with the Tarzan song and all.
