View Full Version : Starting with the 1st episode
Pitooey 05-23-2001, 08:36 AM Starting with the first episode there were already refererences to death and dying. It gave me the creeps. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif
Pitooey 05-23-2001, 08:53 AM Ed told Chico to "Drop dead" and Chico threw himself on the floor and pretended he died. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif
Tracy-Prinze 05-23-2001, 12:56 PM The writers did too much on death on this show, you are right. It is as if they based the whole show on death.
atlangel 05-23-2001, 04:06 PM I don't understand it! Watching all of this now, is heartbreaking.
EdBrownJr 05-23-2001, 08:21 PM Yeah i picked up on that line too.

GET OUT OF MY GARAGE!!!
I agree jenny to many death referances in catm. Not just the first show but all the way through.
Rosalyz 05-24-2001, 12:38 AM To all the Chico and the man yahoo members: The pilot episode pictures are there, hope you enjoy. I know as you do that there's a lot of weird sutff on that episode like you say, but lets enjoy the talent of those two persons and all the good smiles they always take from us. Take care mucho, Rose
Cheryl Harrell 05-24-2001, 04:39 AM Yep, the death references are there & it's weird. I wonder what it meant & what it was about? Just curious.
Another curious thing I noticed. They had Chico cry in a few episodes. I read in his moms book that Freddie cried easily so I wondered if they had him cry in the episodes cuz Freddie cried easily & they knew he would be able to do it easily on the show.
Some of the episodes he cries in:
Ed thinks he's losing his touch as a mechanic. He tells Chico the story he thinks Chico would tell him to inspire him. Chico gets all touched & cries.
Chico, Ed & Louie have to go downtown to talk to the folks from the City to keep the City from tearing down the garage. Ed tells a sad sob story to try to get them to save the garage. Both Chico & Louie start to cry as Ed is telling his sob story.
Padre Episode: Chico cries when he hugs his father goodbye. After his father leaves & he's looking at the pciture of his mom & Ed tells him he'll grow up to be like his dad, he's in tears there too.
Lisa Episode: When Lisa come to the garage cuz she's upset cuz her patient Mr. Cobbler died. Before she starts to tell Chico Mr. Cobbler died, Chico looks like he's about to cry.
Chico Almost Goes Into Business With His Cousin: When he hugs Mando goodbye, he looks like he's about to cry.
Episode Where Ed's Friend (Played by Jim Backus) Cheats on His Wife:
Chico is telling Ed that since his cheating friends wife is interested in him that he needs to break it off with her. Chico starts imitating how Ed would break it off with her & how she would cry when Ed breaks it off with her& she'd need a hankerchief & Ed would give her one. Chico starts crying & needs a hankerchief & he pokes Ed in the stomach & says he needs a hankerchief (It's hilarious how he pokes Ed in the stomach) & Ed reaches in his pocket & gives his to Chico. & Chico takes Ed's hankerchief & wipes his eyes with it etc & later hands it back to Ed & tells Ed you shouldn't give your hankerchief to a married woman etc...
I noticed that when Ed gives Chico his hankerchief, it looked like it had dirty spots on it (unless maybe it was some sort of weird print on it) My hubby noticed that too in that episode too. Eww, I wouldn't want to use someone elses dirty hanky LOL! Now if it's dirty & it's mine, it's okay cuz it has my germs & sniffles on it & not someone elses LOL!
Anyway, I noticed that about the crying & wondered if that was another weird theme similar to the death references...
That would be cool if someone could analize the episodes & tell us what it meant, the death references, crying & so forth...
It's interesting what you notice about a show yrs after it's orgionally been on tv that you missed the first time...
Hopefully someone will know & can tell us all on here as I am all ears...

Cheryl Harrell 05-25-2001, 05:45 AM Just remembered. There is another episode where Chico cries. It's the one where he's dating that Marilyn girl & he proposes to her & she turns him down. (She had to be sick to do that! LOL!) When she breaks up with him he looks like he's about to cry. Later Ed & Louie come in & think Chico is with a girl cuz of the loud singing & what sounds like laughter. But it's not it's Chico crying & Mando playing the guitar & singing to cover it up & make it seem like Chico's with a girl instead. When Chico comes out of the van with Mando, he starts crying over the break up with Marilyn & then later says he's over her now...

atlangel 05-25-2001, 11:24 AM Cheryl, I appreciate your perception and outlining these episodes. I had noticed this as well and it always touched me to see him with tears in his eyes. I think first, the key to it can be found in his Mom's book, in that he has always been extrememly sensitive. I think it is admirable that he was so in touch with his feelings and did not have a problem expressing how he felt. It makes him even more endearing. I wish other men could receive the message, that there is nothing macho about pretending to be a rough, tough, robot devoid of emotions or feelings. It takes a real man to admit when he is hurt, sad, etc. Secondly, I feel that he was a wonderful actor. When the role called for it, he was able to cry and express the emotion the character was feeling. In his dramatic role in "Million-Dollar Rip-Off" there is a scene where this is evident. As always, "Our Prinze" delivers.
FREDDIE FOREVER!
Cheryl Harrell 05-25-2001, 03:53 PM I agree with ya. I think it's sweet how he shows his emotions & cries when he feels like it. It's nice to see a guy with feelings like that. It makes me sad to see him cry tho. Yeah, I read in his moms book where he cried easy. I think that's sweet...
I'd love to know more about the crying scene in the MILLION DOLLAR RIPPOFF & love to know more about it in general. I'd love to see that one!
Cheryl Harrell 05-27-2001, 04:52 AM Another episode where Chico cries is the one where everyone thinks Ed had died cuz his obituary is in the newpaper but it's another Ed Brown that has died. At the end Chico asks Ed to eulogize him & tell him what he'd say at his service if he were to die. When Ed does the eulogy, Chico cries. That is weird that being in there considering what happened to Freddie...
I just figured out that's 8 episodes he's cried in...

Cheryl Harrell 05-28-2001, 05:03 AM Watching some CATM episodes tonite with my hubby I found another episode where Chico cries. It's the Bathtub episode where he wants to put in a bathrub for himself in the garage & the inspector won't let him live in hte van cuz it's against a city ordinance.
After the inspector guy leaves Chico is sitting on the stairs & he looks so sad like he's about to cry. Poor thing is in tears. Makes me want to put my arm around him & comfort him. He starts talking to Ed about how he's gonna be homeless again & he sounds so sad & down. When Louie walks into the garage, Chico gets up to talk to him. As he's walking towards Louie, Chico is wiping tears from his eyes with his fingers. Bless his heart!
So that's 9 episodes he's cried in that I know of. If I come across anymore I'll let you know...
atlangel 05-28-2001, 08:52 AM Cheryl, I was astounded when you mentioned the episode of CATM where the newspaper reports that another Ed Brown had passed on. The scene where Chico asks Ed to eulogize him is chilling! It is meant to be touching and humorous, but considering what happened, I am floored by it all. I have watched this one repeatedly and it really gets to me. Remember when Chico says to Ed, "What if I were to go?" And he looks up toward the heavens. Ed replies, "Stop it. You're too young to talk like that." How right Ed was. Then when Ed finishes with "Good Night, Sweet Prince (Prinze)!!!! I can't get over the terrible irony of this and so many other episodes with these death references.
Cheryl Harrell 05-28-2001, 01:20 PM That was chilling & nobody knew then what would happen to him. I can't figure out why Ed says "Goodnite Sweet Prinze" to Chico. It was the character of Chico he was talking to & not Freddie. Very strange...
All of those death references are eerie and cilling but in regards to the good night sweet Prince line I think we need to remember that CATM was a comedy after all and I think the prince line was a play on names and words just as Freddie's legal name change-He wanted to be unique. He couldn;t be the king of comedy so he was going to be the Pinze note unique spelling and it is also a little similar to his birth name.
I think it was just a play on words for the laugh of it but looking at the scene after Freddie's death does give it an errie feeling
Tracy-Prinze 05-31-2001, 12:55 AM Hey JennyLee, Sorry I just had to set it on fire.LOL
Pitooey 05-31-2001, 08:45 AM My hubby thinks I'm putting too much emphasis on the death thing. He tells me it's just a coincidence. One day I was looking at the show and hubby walked in and the show kept on talking about death and dying and I asked him is it weird or what? He said "Yes" it is wierd.......
Cheryl Harrell 05-31-2001, 04:15 PM Another episode where he cries is when Ed tells him he doesn't want him anymore & wants him to leave. In one epsiode, I think it's that one, he looks like he's about to cry & he swallows real hard a couple of times like he's got a big lump in his throat & is about to burst into tears... So that's like 10 episodes he's cried in...
Cheryl Harrell 06-10-2001, 02:01 AM Another episode where he cries is the Shelley Winters one. When she starts telling how her late husband Max died from being hit by a snow plow Chico looks like he's about to cry. You can see him blinking his eyes the whole time she's telling that like he's blinking tears from his eyes & he swallows really hard like he's got a big lump in his throat & is all choked up...
So that's 11 episodes he's cried in...
Pitooey 06-11-2001, 09:15 PM "Everyone" I just got spooked...... After today I'm going to need a long rest......
I was just looking at episode # 11 The Veterans. As I was looking at the tape Chico and Ed were talking in Ed's office about Ed when he got shot and wounded in the war he was in New Orleans. They are talking about someone who shot Ed and as I'm listening intently I noticed in the background the word HEAD. I just freaked out! If my husband hears me....... He's going to think I'm a goner............

Pitooey 06-18-2001, 08:47 AM Last night I saw the episode #19 - Long live the man..... At the end of this episode Chico asks Ed What would happen if he were to die first?
Chico: What if I were to go back to the bosom of Abraham?
Ed: tells Chico that he's too young to think about that.
Ed says at the end "Good night sweet Prince"!
Cheryl Harrell 06-18-2001, 04:49 PM I've been wondering why he said to Chico "Goodnite Sweet Prinze" when Freddie was being Chico & not Freddie?
Cheryl,
I really think the line goodnite sweet prince was a comedic twist on Freddie;s real name, perhaps ment to lighten the mood
Cheryl Harrell 06-18-2001, 08:36 PM Thanks for the info! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif I was wondering about that! It is chilling he said that to Freddie & then he later passed on the way he did... So sad. But I like to think of all the stuff ont he show that makes me laugh...
Me too Cheryl,
In fact that's what I told my sister the other day when she told me she thought I was obcessed and going off the deep end with pics of "a dead guy" in my room and on my pc screen. I told her I like to think of Freddie and the marvelous talent he was. His show made me laugh then and it does now and I like to remember him for that
(With the world the way it is anything that makes you laugh can't be all that bad)
Cheryl Harrell 06-19-2001, 02:21 AM Evindently your sister has forgotten all the famous dead people who are still loved & have fans who collect on them like Elvis, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe & others. Nothing obsessive about liking Freddie/CATM. Good comedy never goes out of style. When someone passes on you keep their memory alive & we're all doing that here. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif So keep on putting up the pictures. Eventually your sister will see enough of them that she will grow to like him too. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
Cheryl Harrell 07-21-2001, 04:00 AM I found another episode where Chico cries. It's the one where Rev. Bemis isn't popular with his church congragation anymore & he gets Chico to preach at his church & they like Chico better & Chico & Ed try to get the folks to like Rev Bemis again.
It's a scene where Rev Bemis comes to the garage & tells Chico & Ed that is has written a letter to the Elders of the church to resign. Chico sees the Revs letter has tears on it. The Rev gets to crying. I noticed when Rev Bemis cries, Chico looks like he's about to start crying too & there tears in his eyes. It's so sweet how he cared about the Rev. You can tell it really got to Freddie. What kept Chico from bawling was the church ladies come in there to see him. It was sooo sweet...

Cheryl Harrell 07-24-2001, 05:35 AM I found another episode where Chico cries. It's an earlier episode. It's the one where Ed ex-friend Guerra comes in the garage to have his car fixed & Chico tries to get them back together.
There is a scene more towards the end where Chico tries to get Guerra to go upstairs to talk to Ed. After he talks to Guerra & Guerra goes to the steps & stops a minute. Chico looks like he's about to cry. He's blinking tears from his eyes & he looks sooo sad. Guerra starts walking up the stairs. I noticed that Chico had tears in his eyes & his eyes are shining with tears. I noticed that if you look real good you can see tears coming out of his eyes & streaming down his face. He looks like he's about to bawl his eyes out. It's so sad... They turn the camera away from Chico to show Guerra knocking on the door. I bet they did that not only cuz that was next in the scene but probably so Chico could regain his composure. After Ed lets Guerra in, Chico starts to get happy again. I could tell that this wasn't written in the script but that Freddie was truly sad when he was in this scene & it made him really sad. I bet he thought he had no one that cared even that early in the series. Poor baby! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif I ebt folks probably thought he was just crying cuz he was soft-hearted & the scene got to him which it did, but never knew how sad he truly was. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gif
Karen64 07-24-2001, 08:09 AM You're very perceptive, Cheryl! Too bad Freddie didn't have someone like you around back then to see how bad he was hurting inside! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/crying.gif
Cheryl Harrell 07-24-2001, 12:45 PM Back then if I'd have known him I probably wouldn't have noticed that. I never noticed that when watching the show back then. Now knowing what happened to him, I see stuffon the show that folks overlooked back then.
It was so sad how he cried in that episode. I noticed when Guerra was walking up the steps & Chico is watching him in tears, that they are playing that sad CATM music they play whenever something sentimental is going on on the show...
