I am afraid to leave the state of Iowa
The only time I will leave iowa in my life is when I go to London (whenever that is.)
All the other states have major crimes and big cities such as Omaha, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis, and Sioux Falls. All those cities scare me but I'm an Iowa man and always will be. I haven't left the state since 1994 and I am glad I haven't.

Kay Scarpetta 12-16-2002, 01:14 PM Uh....ok look- no offense or anything, but what if Iowa just broke down and went in the crapper? What if it was the most dangerous state in the USA? I mean.... seriously
RainMan 12-16-2002, 01:20 PM Dude can't u ever say anything positive about me? like if you don't like my posts just simply don't post on them. Because I'm sick of your negative posts. This is the chit chat forum and i can chat about anything I want.
Thank you.

¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-16-2002, 01:24 PM How can you mention all those cities and NOT mention NYC!!! Although, I told my mother that Id rather spend the night in NYC by myself then to walk down an alley of Lawrence, Mass.
And, if you dont like going to those cities of crime, why not some place like Vermont, Maine, NH, CT, Rhode Island, or Alaska? And, if you really want safe.. come on down to Southern NH.
Oh, and to answer the poll.. I like leaving my state-- as long as I get back. Yea, my state is boring, but I hate change and would rather spend the rest of my life in New England-- everyone I know is around here, why mess it up?
la10424 12-16-2002, 01:37 PM Well, I live in North Carolina and I've been as far south as Miami, FL and as far north as Ohio. however I have been lucky enough to go to London and Paris! It was a trip with a bunch of my school friends and we had a hell of a time there! I'd love to go back to London again and I've contemplated moving to Alaska once I graduate college. As much as I love it here in North Carolina I can't help but day dream about how my life would be different if I moved away. In all actuality I doubt I'll ever leave NC for good. I love it too much. I've lived in the same house ever since I was born and I love it here. My whole life is here, my friends, my family. I'm not scared to leave but I do want to stay for as long as possible.
la10424 12-16-2002, 01:41 PM oh by the way, there are two places i'd never want to live Texas because of tornado alley, and California because of the earthquakes

STOP URE MAKING ME JEALOUS! lol
The reason why i'm not going on the Gator Bowl trip during christmas break is that Florida has hurricanes and the Disney World roller coaster will drag you around the tracks (a guy died by being dragged around on one of the roller coasters)

Stop putting words in my mouth. I never SAID I didn't like your posts. Did I say that? No. Practice what you preach. Second of all, I don't exactly find my above response 'negitive'. I was just merely saying 'What would happen if Iowa turned dangerous, then what would you do?'. I was proving a point.
Third of all- MY negitive posts? Oh, you think my posts are negitive, don't you? For Christ's sake, you got one guy in another post calling you a loser, anyother one saying your just plain weird, and you think MINE are bad? I never called you a loser. I think people have the right to be obsessed with whatever they want.
Yes, the First Amendment states that the congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. So I know you can post whatever you want.

Brian Damage 12-16-2002, 02:42 PM I love NYC because I was born and raised there. But I realize it's not for everyone. I've had the priveledge to join the Navy and see the world. You cannot live in fear because you'll miss out on alot if you do. Just because there is more crime in certain places, doesn't garauntee that you're going to get mugged.

Try telling that to my Dad. He STILL doesnt like the idea of me & Amanda going to NYC alone. We decided on Disney- which he likes.. but we're going to be 19. Im sure if I didnt live with my parents still I could do whatever I wanted, but Im not going to piss him off and disobey him just because I want to see Conan and go shopping. Its not worth it. Especially if I DID get mugged. Ay yi yi.
And I agree with Karley.. she even said and I QUOTE- ok look- no offense or anything. She meant no harm. Just stating the facts, AND her opinion.

Omaha?? I live in Iowa...about 1 mile away from Omaha...there arent that many awful crimes that are commited there.
But to answer your question, I'm not afraid to leave Iowa. People broke into my house here (in Iowa) so really, bad stuff happens here too.

Yea. Its always the SMALL towns where creepy things happen. Id feel better in a city knowing theres always a lot of people out, so its easy to get help. But out here, who can you turn to?

Hell, my town only has 13,000 people in it and it's the only town in the county and we have a pretty high crime rate. Big cities don't mean mugging and killing the second you step in them. Crime exists everywhere and you can't escape it by never moving. Your town will one day have crime, trust me. Things change. You're born. You move on. You die. That's life.
Hey, I swiched from a city of 10,000,000 people to a town of just over 10,000. I'm still alive.
Moonlight Lady 12-16-2002, 06:48 PM I'd leave NY to go on vacation somewhere. I really don't think i'll ever move out of NY. I love it here.

No offesne to you at all Nathan. Trust me. It was funny how Babes_Kay worded the post.
Nathan, you haven't left your state in almost 9 years? WOW! Don't let the events that are occuring confine you, man.
Do you guys remember November 12th, 2001? Two months after September 11, 2001. There was another plane crash in Far Rockaway in Queens, NY. Well I was on I-278 going into Manhattan to ice skate when my cousin turned on the radio in the car then we found out that there terrorists could have possibly rigged the plane. We were on the on the Interstateand barely moved for almost 2 hours. That was a morning! We tried to go though Brooklyn to get to Manhattan but then a police officer told us all the bridges were shut off and we needed to tuen back around.
I had to cancel my flight to go back to Florida that day and reschedule for the next day. People were asking me: "Aren't you scared to fly" and there were comments like: "I was so scared for you". I am not gonna stop flying on planes nor allow someone put limits on my happiness but trying to put fear in me. I will use wisdom, though. But I won't stop living. God has not told me it's time to go anywhere, so I keep going.
blackbeard 12-16-2002, 07:22 PM Would you leave to go to another state if they had the worlds biggest KMART
Hollow 12-16-2002, 07:25 PM I live in queerass gayizona. It would be an ok state if it werent for the stupid cowboys and indians to come here 1st and give the state a gay reputation, create the cowboy city Tombstone, put up a crapload of stupid ranches, and make us all look bad. Now every1 think we're cowboys and indians that live in a desert, but there IS some cowboys here. I went to tombstone 1 time and it just had a buncha gay cowboys. All the cowboys here can take their lil cowboy hats and horses and YEEEEEEEEEHAW their way out to find their own place and call it Gayland. Then this state will be just fine.

Nope, not even for that. There's a kmart in Lincoln and I dare not go there, my parents and bro went there but I didn't cause I don't like leaving Iowa.
My parents left me home for two weeks and I stayed home because I didn't want to go to Michigan or Tenesee. I don't care if they have a Kmart the size of the world's largest mall in edmundton, alberta I still wouldn't leave the state!

Yep. Ever spend much time in downtown Des Moines after dark? Or how about the Southeast Bottoms? Anywhere around East High? Or North High. They had kids fighting each other with knives at Hoover High last week, really close to a nice neighborhood.
BTW, I like Omaha and Kansas City and feel absolutely safe going to both.

Seriously, I don't live around hicks. My town is the most white-bred, snotty upperclass town on the map, with the exception of West Des Moines.

Even though we live a long ways away in the same state...it sounds like we live in the same place!
I've basically lived in Omaha my whole life...my mom works there, I probably will too, but yeah...there are bad parts, but it's not whole cities or states. You can live all by yourself on a farm a million miles away from everyone, and the "bad guys" still find you.

*Marilyn Monroe* 12-16-2002, 11:15 PM Nathan, if you think about it, bad things dont happen near as much as good stuff. It's just that you hear about the bad things way more because it's different than the way we're supposed to be, so it's silly to stay in one state (especially Iowa ;) ) because you're afraid of bad things.
Titania 12-16-2002, 11:19 PM im not afraid to leave PA...id like to be able to come home..but you sound paranoid...
ok, and if you think some of those cities are bad for crime- try ny, dc,
try philly- the city that loves you back... :: cough :: the city to watch your back :: cough :: but you cant be totally safe anywhere so you might as well go whereever you want.
AnaheimPMWitch 12-16-2002, 11:21 PM Okay heres MY situation :) I LIVE IN boring PORTLAND Oregon OKAY I dont EVEN live in Portland I LIVE in THE SMALLEST Suburb of Portland :( and I HATE IT HERE I WANT TO move to California (NOT LA but Huntington beach its very PRETTY and its far enough away from all the crime) My Dream is to LEAVE all this and work For Disneyland but for now I'M stuck here cause I cant afford to move and this is where my Family is
as for your situation Nate I know you dont want to hear this but its true THERES Crime no matter where you go there might not be that much In Iowa but if you decided to move somewhere else thered be crime there to so I wouldnt let FEAR get to you
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 12-17-2002, 01:37 AM What would you do if your future wife wanted to move to say, Hawaii or Maryland?
OR, better question, what if, say for some strange reason- your Mom or Dad got a business opportunity and took it only to find out its in New York? What would you do? Live in the streets of Iowa? I mean, something can happen ANY time. Hell, I thought Id be living in Danville my whole life (well, I thought my parents would), but now we're moving to *gag* Maine in a year or two. Do I want to? No. My whole LIFE is here. I love it. Not too big, not too small. Its not the city, but its got all the surrounding areas to shop most of them within a 30 minute drive or less. But I have no choice. Unless of course I want to live in an apartment, which I dont. I have a home, and am going to go with the flow.
LucyFan 12-17-2002, 02:18 AM I am currently happy where I am living. BUT if I had a chance to move to Los Angelos, California I would gladly take it. I know the place is dangerous but there is so much it has to offer.

If my parents got it, I would just stay in Churdan, Iowa. We own our house, and they would wire me money thru Western Union. No I don't need to see a therapist or anything like that, i'm not one of those people who sits in a black room all day staring at a computer, I get out, go to school, go shopping, go to the field of dreams (cool place), but I just don't like leaving Iowa. It's like adaptation or something like that. Everything I need is in Iowa, there's no reason for me to leave Iowa, though when I get out of college I am going to try to live in Atlantic, Iowa, which is 40 miles east of the Nebraska Border (SCARY!) but I don't feel comfortable being in any other state. You should of seen me in DC in 1994, I was BEGGING my grandparents to take me home cause I hated it in DC. No it wasn't because I wanted my mommy or daddy, all my stuff was there and I am used to living in Iowa where things make sense. I was born in Iowa, lived in Greene County all my life, and I will prolly spend my dying years here if I don't make it to Atlantic. (Think John Cougar Mellancamp's "Small Town") I don't need to leave the state, and yes, crime and terrorism is a few reasons why I don't like leaving the state. Terrorists will likely come to all the other states rather than Iowa because Iowa is boring and the biggest town is less than 200,000 people. I don't feel scared walking the streets in Des Moines, it's well kept and clean, and the crime rate is low, unlike Mineeapolis, chicago, and nyc, where all the cities' crime rates are up, up, and up! And if you offered me one hundred billion dollars to cross an Iowan border, LIKE HELL I WILL!
The only time I will ever leave the state of Iowa is when I get the chance to go to London. And if I have the money, I am considering living in London or somewhere near in the UK because there are more people like me living there. All my favorite TV shows are in the UK (cept Facts of Life of course) and I just think I would fit in in England rather than the US cause everyone in the US hates gays, kmart lovers, and people who draw maps all day long.
Anyone want to buy me a plane ticket to London? I will gladly accept it:)
And yes, other than London, I would rather be tortured or killed than leave the state of Iowa.
dawsongirl 12-17-2002, 02:26 PM I'll bet you more plenty of people are killed in London.
Anyway, I couldn't live in a small town. I'm a suburb girl. There's nothing to do in small towns if you ask me. And yeah, Atlantic is too small.
Oh, I wouldn't walk the streets of Des Moines after dark, especially down by the river.
*ShortCake* 12-17-2002, 02:29 PM why not dawsongirl? LOL... i dont really mind the small towns.. I dont get lost as easy!! i am starting to get myself around tampa though. thank god, i like big towns though :) especially LA.

You think the UK is accepting of gay people??! Ha!! Don't make me laugh!! There's homophobia in every country on this earth - the UK is no different. The situation here is helped by the fact that a lot of well-known British celebrities are gay - Graham Norton, Rhona Cameron, Sue Perkins, Will Young - but that doesn't necessarily make it easier for your average gay person like myself.
And just cos Rainman feels he has more in common with the Brits than his fellow Americans doesn't make him a traitor to his country (which is what you seem to be inferring). Give the dude a break!
And is there any chance you can give me the name of that town in Maine........? ;)

Ah no. I wasnt making him a traitor. I was just making a point that just because he thinks the UK is accepting, doesnt make it accepting. You cant base a reputation on how people treat eachother by the place they live.. you base it on the PERSON. Youre gonna get people who accept gays in USA, and people accept gays in UK. He made it seem like everyone loves gays in UK or something, and yet Ive never heard of that. And I never said UK is accepting of gays..I was ASKING him.
As for that place in Maine, I forget I THINK Ogunqiut. Its by the ocean. They have the gay pride flags all over the place and its really popular during the summer time.

You're right. The size of the city doesn't matter when it comes to crime. I live in a small city and it's the crime capital of Canada. Other big cities in Canada such as Victoria, for one, actually has a lower crime rate. There was actually a shooting in a town I used to live in that happened a few months ago. I was amazed when I heard of it from my dad because it's such a small town it was the last place I would ever think of anything even remotely dangerous happening.

its Ogunquit- in southern maine....
ok- my greatgreataunt vacationed there in the 30s (before it got a rep for the gay town type thing..) so my family has a beach house up there. its in the area away from the parts that are like 70 some percent gay. (o and my familys like- conservative, republican, extremly religious, yeah...dont quite fit in that town sometimes!!!!!)
but Ive never seen a gay flag up there but they do have quite a lot of activists. But its a really small town so the pop triples at least during the summer and most of the tourists arent there for that- the gay thing is kept pretty well underground especially in the part which has become just a snobby resort type place.
o, and i have lived in a pretty small town my whole life and its not bad cause we do have the city not far away- only it definitly isnt good because EVERYONE knows everyone elses business all the time.

no ive never seen one...ive seen some merchandise in privately owned shops (like little stickers and signs) but its not too obvious- ill put it this way- i didnt even know there were a lot of gay people around until a few years ago and ive spent summers there since i was born. no ive never been to old orchard. Ontio beach is like, 200 feet from my door, so i go there a lot. also Ogunquit Beach, Wells Beach, and York Beach.

Yea, I didnt know it had that rep until my parents mentioned it.. and then it seemed like everyone knew it for that. I didnt start noticing the the flags until I knew what they meant. When I was younger, I didnt know what they meant! I thought they were just for decoration.:bonk:

ok- my greatgreataunt vacationed there in the 30s (before it got a rep for the gay town type thing..) so my family has a beach house up there. its in the area away from the parts that are like 70 some percent gay.
Ah......I've been to Ogunquit. Near Wells Beach, correct? Ya well I was walking out of a restaurant by the outlets there and I saw a punchbuggy go by all decorated in gay pride. It was the cutest little thing too. I've seen flags there though

I'll second that! Michigan is a pretty dang safe state. Detroit is scary, but the rest of the state is fine.
I actually was born in Indiana, but I've lived in Michigan for most of my life. I can't be afraid to travel, cuz I've traveled my entire life. When I was a kid my dad was in the army, so I got used to moving VERY early on.
You're missing out on so much by never leaving the state you were born in. I've seen so much, and there's still so much to see! I lived a year in Europe and didn't manage to see half of what I wanted to... traveling is scary at first, but you conqer it very quickly. I'm trying to save up enough so that I can do another study abroad this summer in England. Well, we'll see if that happens. ;)
dawsongirl 01-15-2004, 07:50 PM Well, I tell ya...right now, Iowa sucks, unless you really love politics. I am so sick of caucus talk I could scream.

Oh, I wouldn't walk the streets of Des Moines after dark, especially down by the river.
Amen....I lived in a town of 7,000 and crimes happened EVERY day up there...but then I moved to a bigger city (55K people) and I feel so much more safe here. And I agree, there's never anything to do in small towns. The only major stores we had were Walmart, Kmart and Maurices. But that was it. Here, they have TONS of stores. :D
PZelda 01-15-2004, 08:49 PM I've been to Washington DC before...I hear it's pretty high in crime, but if you know what you're doing, you'll be OK. I didn't have any trouble there, and would go back in a heartbeat. DC was AWESOME. And I've been to Minneapolis a ton of times before and never had any trouble there, either...It's the only major city that's the closest to me...:D That won't stop me from going to Minneapolis again and AGAIN and AGAIN. I love traveling, just not by car. :D
BTW, most big cities really aren't worth being scared about. My worst experience was actually in my own state - when my mom and I got lost in Detroit at about 1am coming home from a show. That was scary, but of course, nothing happened. I had absolutely no bad experiences in New York, Chicago, Paris, Berlin, London, Washington DC, Toronto... not a problem. As long as you know where you're going, you're fine.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 01-15-2004, 11:50 PM I'm afraid to leave my house. :)
Lady T 01-16-2004, 02:30 AM I lived in San Diego, almost my entire life; today it was 74 degrees in January..San Diego is a very, very beautiful city and the town I live in is just as lovely (Del Mar)...but sometimes I need a change of scenery like everybody else and Southern California has it's dwonfalls, like expensive gas, houses, etc. traffic and snotty people..
Since Las Vegas is like 5 hours away, it is the perfect get a way from California, or Arizona is ONLY 3 hours away from San Diego...and of course, Mexico is just around the corner...:)

Geeze, where was this town that you lived in? Iraq? ;)
I live in a town of 8,000 and there is not much crime here. Not as much as the bigger cities. We had one murder about 15 years ago. It was big news naturally. Other than that, the only crimes you read about are for shoplifting, drunk driving, small-time drug possession(mostly pot), and "Gasp!" speeding!:D
It's not a bad town.
Besides, I'd rather have to drive a little to go to all the big stores than have them right here. I'd rather see trees than buildings.
isiahthomas 01-16-2004, 05:22 PM I don't wanna live anywhere but Cleveland, Ohio myself. I was born & raised in Cleveland & lived here most of my life. All my family is here except my parents & brother who live in Maryland. I used to live in Maryland & Virginia but i moved back to Cleveland when i graduated from high school in 94 in Maryland. People always talk bad about my city cause our sports teams suck. Just cause the sports teams suck doesn't mean the city sucks. Ricky Davis who used to play for the Cleveland Cavs said some bad things a couple of weeks ago about my city & the team. He said the city & the team is a black hole. Now that's just wrong LOL. I agree with him that the team is a black hole cause they ain't never gonna be good & i hope Lebron James leaves here after a couple more seasons cause i know he's gonna get tired of losing so much. Ricky Davis was born in Las Vegas but he grew up in Iowa. How can he talk about Cleveland is a black hole when there ain't a damn thing to do in Iowa? Hahahahahahahahaha. I've never been to Iowa but just by saying the name makes it seem like it's a lame town. I wanna be a radio dj cause i like rap music a lot & i wanna meet entertainers but i don't wanna move from Cleveland. I get homesick when i'm living somewhere else cause i don't like adapting to a new city & trying to find my way around. I remember when i first moved from Cleveland to live in Virginia, i was very upset. My parents wanted to move cause they wanted to expose my brother & i to more things & they felt Cleveland wasn't exposing us to anything. The schools in Cleveland are very poor compared to schools in Virginia & Maryland. The schools were more diverse with different races of people in Virginia. The schools i went to in Cleveland were all black kids which i didn't have a problem with.

There are things to do just like any other state. They just aren't on the grand scale that the big attention-getting states are. We aren't CA, NY, Hawaii, or Vegas (that and Reno are the only exciting parts of Nevada), but then neither are the other 46 states.

Um, first of all, hurricane season is from April 1st to November 30th, so the chances of a hurricane hitting Fla. at Christmas break are NIL!!!!!!!
Also, I've been on hundreds of roller coaster rides at parks around the country and haven't been dragged. And I'll still go on hundreds of more rides.
You have got to stop being so paranoid and get out once in a while. There is crime everywhere, even in small towns.
isiahthomas 01-20-2004, 05:15 PM Rain Man is a fool for saying there isn't that much crime in Iowa. As long as u got people on this planet, there's always gonna be crime & murders no matter where u live. That was a stupid statement to say u don't wanna leave Iowa cause of crime in other cities. I like to visit other cities, i just don't wanna live anywhere else but Cleveland. Cleveland doesn't have as much traffic as LA, NY, MD, VA, Washington DC, Atlanta. I don't like living in a big city with a lot of people. Cleveland has a lot of people but not like those big cities i mentioned.
isiahthomas 01-20-2004, 05:18 PM I forgot to say that black actress Gabrielle Union is from Ohama, Nebraska & she used to work at a Payless Shoe Source when she was in high school & she got raped by a robber. The robber came in the store & forced her to go to the back of the store so he could rape her & take the money. There was a white female employer in the store with Gabrielle when this happened & the white lady didn't even call the police is what Gabrielle said. Gabrielle was pistol whipped pretty badly but he didn't get a chance to rape her cause she fought him off. Now a small town like Ohama, u would think something like that would never happen but it did so it doesn't matter where u live, crime is everywhere. I almost cried when i read that Gabrielle was raped cause i like her so much as a actress & i just felt bad for her.
