View Full Version : Unexpected Places
Mickey 12-15-2002, 10:10 AM I was watching a film last night - "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye", from 1950, starring James Cagney. It was a pretty dark sort of film, about a criminal escaped from a chain gang, but one of the prison guards at the beginning was Fred! It was a real surprise to see him there, 'cause it was a pretty brooding sort of film. He got clobbered over the head shortly afterwards, during the escape.
:smash:
Funny how people turn up when you least expect it. Since it was made in 1950 it was probably one of the last things he did before landing the role in ILL.
dawsongirl 12-15-2002, 08:56 PM That's interesting. I don't see him as the guard type. :)
SPLAIN 12-16-2002, 10:51 AM That's just the way i see him, as a gruff guard. I was stunned to learn Lucy used to date Jimmy's brother!
Mickey 12-22-2002, 06:52 AM And again - thought not quite so unexpected a place. How come I never noticed Vivian Vance in The Great Race before?

Never seen that film.
Mickey 12-23-2002, 08:46 AM Sacrilege. It's a Jack Lemmon film, go and watch it immediately!
To be fair, it's not nearly his best, but still - Jack Lemmon!

*ShortCake* 12-23-2002, 12:00 PM I loved Bill Frawley in Miracle on 34th street. :) that was such a cute movie.
Mickey 12-23-2002, 12:35 PM Yes of course, he was in the decent version, wasn't he. I hate the remake. Don't know why, just do!

SPLAIN 12-23-2002, 02:01 PM Viv was in The Great Race? Saw it at the theater as a kid, haven't seen it in years, will look for it, thanks Mickey! Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Shirley MacLaine in a screwball comedy similar to Rat Race!
Mickey 03-01-2003, 07:19 AM William Frawley again. I saw the last half of a 1950 film called 'Pretty Baby' last night, and there was Fred, being... well, very Fred-like even pre-ILL! I hate seeing actors getting typecast, but he does play that sort of character awfully well!

Natalie Wood. :) Viv only has a very small role in it as they mayor's (?) wife.

Yeah, I do too. I think that's about the only movie I've seen William Frawley in. I will always remember him as Fred on ILL.
SPLAIN 03-03-2003, 03:38 PM You have your work cut out for you, Mickey, Bill made at least a hundred films!
vze3t9q9 03-04-2003, 08:37 PM I think he was in a movie called The Lemon Drop KId with Bob Hope. I saw him in that if that was the name of the movie.
Mickey 03-06-2003, 06:10 AM Yes, he was in The Lemon Drop Kid. Almost immediately prior to landing ILL I think.
Isn't that the one that has Bob Hope's character on Death Row, and Bing Crosby has a cameo as the executioner? He's annoyed when Bob Hope gets released, and he doesn't get to kill him after all!

Actually Rat Race was a remake of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which featured practically every Hollywood star at the time but Lucy. And speaking of Shirley MacLaine, I was surprised to see her show her ass on national TV the other night. That's pretty gutsy for a woman who's pushing 70.
SPLAIN 03-10-2003, 11:57 AM I just meant it was a similar genre to Rat Race, i know about Mad World and i too always wondered why Lucy wasn't in it. As for Shirley, why am i not surprised, what show was it by the way?

It was the two-part The Salem Witch Trials, which starred Shirley MacLaine and Kirstie Alley. It was a very entertaining movie and the nude scene not exploitive. I imagine this film will probably get rerun this summer in case you want another chance to see Shirley's butt.
SPLAIN 03-13-2003, 10:47 AM Thanks for the info Jane, no i can live withought seing her butt, but admire her having the courage to do it at her age. When you see Matt Leblanc doing a shower scene on Friends and you can see the underwear in the shadow, it says a lot about dedication to one's craft. Go Shirl!
vze3t9q9 03-16-2003, 09:29 PM Thanks JANE telling me about Shirley Maclaine's role in the Salem Witch Trial Movie. I taped the movie but have yet to see it. When I do I'll I remember she shows her behind.

Did you tape the whole thing? It aired in two parts over two nights. You won't get to see Shirley's ass until close to the end of the second part.
