The Syndicated years where better, mostly due to the absense of Betty White and Rue McClanhan (both having joined Golden Girls), two characters I never particularly enjoyed or found a need for on the show. I much preferred Iola and Bubba to the other two. Just made for a funnier show. THe only real problem with the Syndy years, no Carol Burnett. She was funny.

Of the NBC years and the syndicated years, I say the syndicated years were a lot better. Because most people remember the syndicated years better and there were a lot more stories for the characters to get involved with. Plus, much of the cast was not erratic like it was in the NBC years. The syndicated years were more of an ensemble cast period. Another plus, it was wildly funny.

I remember her being on a syndie episode!

The one where Bubba is on the Swim Team and gets drunk and Thelma tells about a time where Eunice was drunk and ruined the Mother Daughter Church Supper.

Well, that was Eunice, but not Carol Burnett...it was a young girl who did a wonderful impression.

The NBC years and Syndicated years each have their pros and cons. I prefer the NBC years basically because of Carol Burnett, Betty White and Rue McClanahan and how the Naomi character was written.

LOL, weird, I know. I like both NBC and Syndicated, but I just prefered the NBC years, and in the syndicated years, the Naomi character was more dimwitted and never even stuck up for herself when put down, unlike the NBC years where she would always jump in and not hesitate to insult back.

To answer you question, I really like both equally.

I like the NBC years better. When it got to syndication the whole show changed. Mama got smarter and tuff and Vint got dumb and annoying. The original characters changed a lot imo.

Exactly! I like the first season from NBC.

Definitely the syndicated years. The characters of Buzz, Sonia, Ellen, Eunice, etc...just never appealed to me and the comedy just wasn't as good. After it went syndicated it really started to pick up and the comedy got alot wittier and sharper, just like a different, better show...

Same here. I like the syndicated Mama a lot better than the NBC Mama, though. It didn't look like Mama had on a cheap wig, and she REALLY did look more like a grandma. But overall, I loved both versions. :)

It's hard to choose but I pick NBC...just because I love Betty White so much! And Rue.

I think she acted more like a real grandmother/"mama" in the CarolBS "Family" sketches and NBC "Mama" episodes, though.

Especially when I watched the CBS marathon on TVLand last weekend, my gosh, Vicki had her dead-on! I actually know a few women who act like that! VERY negative and anxious...

Syndicated! I can't explain it but the syndicated episodes have a special charm that the NBC episodes are missing. The NBC episodes seem VERY dated and Mama is not the loud mouth mean old woman we know and love in the NBC years. It all just seems more hip in the syndicated episodes to me. And there were too many one dimensional characters in the NBC years, and I cannot stand Aunt Fran and she didn't fit well in the series to me.
It's no wonder that the NBC episodes lasted 2 seasons and the Syndicated episodes last 4 (longer) seasons.

As for the "can't explain it" part, I'm willin' to bet that probably has to do with the fact that the syndicated years had a set-in-stone main cast---99% of the episodes starred Mama, Vint, Naomi, Iola, 'n Bubba. Whereas in the NBC years you'd sometimes have Fran, sometimes Ellen, a few Eunices, Buzz 'n Sonja in 'n out---it was just more "uneven".

As for Aunt Fran, I'm 100% "pro-Fran"! :D She was hysterical, had some o' the best one-liners...seemed to have sort of a "Phillip" feel about her, too---intelligent, successful in her career, but those facets of her personality weren't appreciated much by most o' the other family members.

The NBC years only lastin' 2 seasons was only cause of the men behind the scenes, it had nothin' to do with ratings (see Vicki's book for details). Every time MF started to pick up really good ratings in the NBC years, the network honchos would move it! They didn't understand the show, and therefore didn't care for it, so quietly axed it that way.

But hey, at least all 'round, we got 6 great seasons of the Harpers! :D

Yeah, I guess you're right, but still I don't remember the first 2 seasons really doing much for me. Though, I have to rewatch them, because I haven't seen a season 1 or 2 episode in a looooong time (actually like 1-3 years)

Well, Mama is MUCH more realistic as the negative/anxious/depressed old southern grandmother in the NBC shows---I know real examples of her too well,. The syndicated Mama was more "broad comedy"---which is great 'n funny, just not as "real" though.---I know real life examples too well!

That goes for Mama in the "Carol Burnett Show" skits, too---Vicki had her as a completely real character, utter comedic/dramatic perfection.

She ROCKS! :D
