View Full Version : Who do you wish you saw more of?
highloon 12-08-2002, 04:33 AM During the run of Coach, I thought there were some great characters that we didn't get to see enough of. Do you agree? If so, who were they?
The ones on my list are Judy's father R.J. Watkins, Christine's looney friend Barbara, nerdy Leonard Kraleman, and yes, Mrs. Rizzendough.
The episodes with these people are definitely amongst my favorites. How about you guys?
Janice 12-09-2002, 05:42 PM I'd like to see more of Dauber. I know he's in just about every episode, but I liked the shows where he was featured prominently. The episode where he rents the apartment downstairs from Luther is a true classic. I can laugh out loud just thinking about it. Whenever Dauber's in a scene, I pay attention. Even just sitting quietly in Hayden's office observing Hayden and Luther's nutty conversations, Dauber's facial expressions are great.
I'd also like to see more of Judy. The barbs exchanged between her and Hayden were priceless.
Mrs. Rizzendough's scenes were terrific and far too rare. She could put Hayden in his place as few could. Did she play Lou Grant's wife on MTM?
I liked the few appearances by Hayden's ex-wife, Beth. She made Hayden so uncomfortable. That fake hug he'd give her said it all.
As the series unfolds for me, I'm sure I'll have a broader list of characters I wish I could see more. :)
highloon 12-10-2002, 06:13 PM Janice, I think you're right about Mrs. Rizzendough. The name of the actress who played her escapes me, but I do believe she also was Lou's wife in MTM.
I know my wife would appreciate your comments about Dauber's expressions when observing conversations between Hayden and Luther. She notices that, too. That's such an obscure thing to notice, but you're right. She loves the dog show episode at the beginning when Luther's arguing with Hayden about "Pam" Rizzendough. He's just sitting there sipping on his protein shake, quietly observing the conversation as if watching a movie. It's a great bit.
Did you enjoy his Tom Jones impression at the beginning of the face lift episode? What are some of your other favorite Dauber moments?
BTW, are we single-handedly keeping this messageboard alive? Where is everybody else?
Anyway, I couldn't agree more about Judy and Mrs. Rizzendough. Whenever they're in the show, it's great. Regarding Beth, I love the fake hug, too. I assume you're referring to the episode with her fiancee Chet. My wife and I love watching that one! Anyway, keep posting!
Janice 12-10-2002, 09:39 PM It appears it just about you and I keeping this board going, but that's okay. I don't understand why more people don't love the show. Coach is a sinfully underrated show.
I did love Dauber's Tom Jone's impersonation. He does impersonations well. Bill is quite talented.
Some other Dauber moments that spring to mind are the one where he finally gets his college degree albeit the 8-year plan. Hayden offers him a full time position and plans a graduation ceremony for him at The Touchdown Club. In the meantime, he asks Dauber to wash his car. Dauber didn't want to be a gopher anymore, and I didn't blame him.
There was a scene in Hayden's office where Dauber is struggling to muster up the courage to tell him that he doesn't want to do menial chores anymore. He chooses his words very carefully, and finally has his say. Of course Hayden, who doesn't understand that Dauber needs to be treated as a respected colleague, yells and almost pulls a no-show at Dauber's graduation ceremony.
There was another scene, again in Hayden's office, where Dauber's explaining to him that he wants to sit with Judy at a sport's banquet.
There's the scene where he asked Hayden to stop pulling practical jokes on Judy....appealing to Hayden's love for Christine by telling him he wouldn't like it if anyone treated the woman he loved like that.
I love the comedic moments with Dauber, yet the ones I like best are when he asserts himself and asks for respect.
His character is written as sort of dimwitted, but if you look close enough, there's a quiet courage and wisdom to Dauber.
Often, Hayden and those around him, are shown trying to figure something out, then Dauber will offer 2 or 3 sentences of such simple clarity and common sense, and everything is solved.
Dauber's a good guy.
highloon 12-13-2002, 02:34 AM I think you were right on when you gave the credit to Bill for the multi-faceted character of Dauber. Bill cared about the character and it showed. It's so great to watch him develop over the years. You're right. He gets more courageous and insightful and more aware of the imperfection of those around him. The graduation episode is an excellent example of that. But what's especially endearing about that episode is the ceremony, itself. We see a great blend of Dauber's simple-mindedness and his maturity. It's cute when he's in the middle of his speech at the Touchdown Club and then the phone rings: "Graduation is a special-"(ring ring) He makes a reservation for two for the following night and then resumes, "occasion for any student." And then, right on the heels of that dimwitted moment, he makes a beautiful speech about his love for Hayden, even though Hayden refuses to be there. I got misty, myself at the end of that episode. What a terrific character what a great actor!
Who needs chat rooms when you can talk about great moments with Dauber!
catlover79 09-15-2008, 12:11 AM JUDY!!!! Her rivalry with Hayden was CLASSIC!!!!
browneyes106 03-26-2009, 11:32 PM I thought Barbara was pretty funny.

Which one was Barbara? That name doesn't ring a bell with me. I also would've loved to see more of Luther's lady friend Lorraine (Elinor Donahue).
