I had just gotten home from a Bible study (on a Monday night) and my younger brother told me that a famous rock star had been killed: John Lennon. I have to say, I am ABSOLUTELY ASHAMED of my reaction then--contempt. After all, John Lennon was the one Beatle who said "Christianity will go. I'm right and will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now." For all those years, people had this idea that John Lennon was DISSING Jesus, when he actually said later that he found it sadly ironic that people IN HIS OWN COUNTRY thought the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. He said it was easier to refer to his band as one thing that seemed to be larger than the influence of Christianity, which is true in England. He said that he wasn't saying the Beatles were better or anything, he wasn't being anti-religious. He said he liked Jesus, but didn't care much for his disciples and thought they had twisted his message. He got this from a book called "The Passover Plot." It seems strange that I would adopt back then the same attitudes of people who went out and burned Beatles albums and threaten them. I was a new Christian--and very stupid for the time, when ultra-conservativism reared its ugly head in 1980. Lennon's assassin was also a Christian wannabe. I'm glad though that I went to a Beatles party a week later and TOTALLY got into the Beatles' music. I changed since then. But I wonder about your post when you mentioned "Intelligent Design"?...I hope you realize that the so called Intelligent Design movement is the same type of cynical propaganda and distortion as the distortions that took John Lennon his entire lifetime to overcome. In the eyes of some, he never did overcome it. ABlairican Pie 12-07-2002, 07:55 PM Originally posted by kittflynn RIP John Lennon. It seems you have changed Capain. Yep, you got me there!! Actually, I did want to say that, yes, I've heard arguments that as well, that it's actually a Trojan Horse to make religious biases sound "scientific." Even as a Christian I have questions myself. One thing that really frustrated me on that evolution thread was that too many people with religious beliefs acted as if, to hell with science, let's just go by FAITH... I wanted a scientific response from Christians, but when you get none, what does that tell you?? As if "science" was the enemy....I have wanted to ask people, okay, if God created the universe, why does he only seem to bother with microscopic critters like US when 99.9% of the rest of the cosmos is uninhabitable? I mean, is God REALLY concerned with some stalactite in some darkened ice cave on some planet near the center of the Andromeda Galaxy, some 354376778 gazillion light-years away from earth?? It doesn't mean I don't believe in God, it just means we have BIG QUESTIONS. I guess when I said that about "Intelligent Design", I wanted to make the argument look credible. I do wonder if a lot of Christians who promote these arguments in favor of creationism are really interested in science. I believe there are scientific Christians, but I think a lot of this is all promoted by the religious right. So I know I sound hypocritical here, but I guess back there I was looking for an "official" answer to give. I may not believe in evolution, but maybe I don't understand it as well as I should. Btw, I did read an article that John Lennon briefly accepted Christianity toward the end of his life, but Yoko talked him out of it. "How" John Lennon How can I go forward when I don't know which way I'm facing How can I go forward when I don't know which way to turn How can I go forward into something I'm not sure of Oh no, Oh no How can I have feeling when I don't know if it's a feeling How can I feel something if I just don't know how to feel How can I have feelings when my feelings have always been denied Oh no, Oh no You know life can be long and you've got to be so strong and the world is so tough Sometimes I feel I've had enough Oh no, oh no How can I give love when I don't know what it is I'm giving How can I give love when I don't know how to give How can I give love when love is something I ain't never had Oh no, oh no You know life can be long and you've got to be so strong and the world is so tough Sometimes I feel I've had enough Oh no, oh no How can we go forward when we don't know which way we're facing How can we go forward when we don't know which way to turn How can we go forward into something we're not sure of Oh no, Oh no laceyinthesky 12-08-2002, 08:37 PM :crying: RIP John :crying: :boxing: Die, Mark David Chapman, Die!!! :smash: ..ok..
