I was wondering if most people enjoy hearing laughter of a live audience. I know I do. But what about the shows that don't have an audience, instead they have a laugh track. Does anyone find them annoying?

I like them with laughtracks.

I don't mind the live audiences because they atleast laugh during the funny parts. Laugh tracks just get on my nerves. They insert them in when the scene wasn't that funny. It's just annoying to me.

The "fake" laughtracks get on my nerves bigtime. When they're "live" responses, it's a lot better. The shows with no laughtrack like Malcolm in the Middle and Wonder Years do just fine without a laughtrack imo. I'll pick live response laughtracks.

The more laugh tracks I hear, the more annoyed I am with them.

I like laugh tracks most of the time, but sometimes they can go a bit too far, for instance it's much like canned laughter. Sometimes the audience laughs at the funny lines and then not so funny lines, it's a mix. Eventually it leads up to it what lines are really the best. Sometimes they can decrease you viewing ability. When you hear the sound of some one laughing it ruins the enjoyment for the viewer. It all depends if the laugh-track is necessary or not.

why won't some producers film it in front of a studio audience? what do they gain by doing that?

I think some laugh tracks/audiences are funny. Wasn't it weird how the audienced cheered everytime a cast member will go inside the house in Married With Children?!

I always though the laugh tracks on "Saved By The Bell" were fake, but after watching their E! True Hollywood Story, I was proven wrong.

If a sitcom has a studio audience, the setting would be limited because you need a studio and a place where the audience would sit. You couldn't seat them outside. One advantage of having a studio audience is that if the show is really funny and there's a lot of laughter from the crowd, then you would have evidence that the show is funny and that there are a lot of people who like it.

So I'm guessing Seinfeld was never filmed in front of an audience because it was constantley moving around all over the place

"Seinfeld" was unusual in that it had so many location shots for a show that was filmed in front of an audience. During production, the location segments were filmed first, and then during filming of the other segments at the studio, the location segments would be played on monitors before the studio audience at the appropriate times. The audience's reaction to the location segments was recorded and added to the soundtrack.

I like the fact that Wonder Years didnt have a laugh track. But, it was a dramady, so it wasnt like a joke was made every 10 seconds. Malcom In The Middle & Andy Richter Controls The Universe do better without a laughtrack too. I like the fact that shows like that can shoot on location. Brady Bunch had a laughtrack and the laughs were so fake! But, its not that much of a bother to me.

As for Happy Days.. the first 2 seasons were filmed on location and WITH a laughtrack. IMO, the episodes were better in depicting the life of the 1950s. In 1975, it went live (well, it went live ONCE in season 2) for full-time, and although I did find the episodes funnier @ times, I missed the location shots. I also hated the fact that they had to raise their voices so you could hear them. The Fonz cheers got a bit out of hand- but he was the big thing in 76 and I would have done the same thing. I liked the fact that it went live, but I also miss thed on location shots and their normal voice volumes.

I like sitcoms with laugh-tracks when they are from a live-studio audience, but I hate it when the laugh tracks sound so fake on shows like "What I like About You".

I prefer the audience. I tend to laugh more when the studio audience is laughing to. But Scrubs is very good without one.

Definately a laughing audience because the show seems funnier than without an audience!

I actually find that sitcoms with laugh tracks tend to be funnier than ones without it. That's why I enjoy sitcoms with laugh tracks

I was thinking about this the other day and to me shows with laughter are preferable because it helps with pacing and filling otherwise awkward pauses. However, I'm not a fan of when shows have a really loud and annoying audience/laugh track. When it gets too in-your-face it becomes distracting.

As to whether a laugh track or a live audience is best, that really depends on the style and rhythm of the show. I have favorites from both types.

Not every show needs one. The current shows on ABC like Modern Family work well without one. Classic ones like The Wonder Years is a great example. Last Man Standing works with one.
