I usually write original stuff, but the last time my daughter was listening to her Allan Jackson Greatest Hits CD, when he was singing "Midnight in Montgomery", I suddenly got the idea for "Midnight in Los Angeles" So in honor of Freddie's birthday, here is what I wrote:
Midnight in Los Angeles
Midnight in Los Angeles, I walked up a lonely road,
and thought how last I saw him was his last New Year’s Eve show.
I stopped at the marble wall where I knew he could be found,
knelt to pray and saw his name, and felt the wind die down.
Then a dark man with the sweetest laugh took me by surprise
wearing black dress boots, a blue velvet suit, and haunting haunted eyes.
He said, “Mami, buenos noches, it’s cool to know you care.”
Then the wind picked up and he was gone--was he ever really there?
When it’s midnight in Los Angeles
you’ll hear him laughing still,
see his smile light up the starry sky
but feel a lonely chill.
And when the wind is right
you might smell smoke
and wine upon the air.
Midnight in Los Angeles--
Freddie’s always laughing there.
