View Full Version : Worst Cast Additions
mstewart 11-29-2002, 02:18 AM Cousin Oliver - The Brady Bunch
Ricky - Partridge Family
Jenny - One Day At A Time (Thank God they took her off after one season)
Nick and Alex Handris - One Day At A Time (I wish they would have took Alex with Nick when he was written off except I would not want the child killed with his father was the way Nick was written off)
Phyllis new co-workers (Phyllis was funny during the first season when she was working at the photo studio)
The Hollywood cast of the New Dick Van Dyke Show during the third season
Martin and Olivia Kendall - The Cosby Show
Sam McKinney - Differn't Strokes
Rebecca Howe - Cheers
Adamantium 11-29-2002, 02:29 AM Although I love "NewsRadio", Jon Lovitz taking over for Phil Hartman just wasn't good.
Simka being added to "Taxi"
I didn't like the addition of Col. Potter on "M*A*S*H".
eddie01 11-29-2002, 07:27 PM I THINK THEY HAD TO ADD SOMEONE TO THE SHOW FRANK COULD NOT RUN THE CAMP WITHOUT RESPECT SO POTTER WAS BORN.
callmetootie 11-29-2002, 08:06 PM Rebecca and Woody on Cheers. They sure weren't no Diane and Coach...
Penny Lane 11-29-2002, 08:16 PM Anyone added to the cast of Happy Days after season 2!
Penny Lane 11-29-2002, 08:19 PM Beau on Welcome Back Kotter .Yuck!
Coy and Vance on The Dukes of Hazzard:rolleyes:

Impressions 11-29-2002, 11:27 PM Pippa and Kelly - The Facts of Life
Crimson and Clover 11-30-2002, 12:14 AM Cousin Oliver was horrible
Flip when they added him on Happy Days was a big mistake
Rebbeca on Cheers (i did like woody though)
¤Graced¤ 11-30-2002, 12:41 AM I hated Andy on Family Ties, whenever they add a cute littlekid on a show, it's a terrible result.
Rebecca Howe On Cheers, no one could replace Shelley
LucyFan 11-30-2002, 05:07 AM I think these are some of the worst cast additions:
Cousin Oliver from The Brady Bunch
Rhonda Lee from Laverne & Shirley
2nd Lionel played by Damon Evans from The Jeffersons
Lana from Three's Company
2nd Harriet Winslow from Family Matters

I agree 100% about the 2nd lionel, boy was he dorky. imo he was the number one worst addition to a sitcom of all time.

I say that because Richard Dawson was part of that cast. I've never actually seen any episodes.

Uh............... Who was Flip?
Jimbo 12-01-2002, 09:13 PM When "Seven" (played by Shane Sweet) was added to the cast of "Married With Children".
Chocoholic 12-01-2002, 10:01 PM Max Louis on NewsRadio
Chris on Becker
James 12-02-2002, 03:35 AM My least favorite cast additions were Rose, Jeffrey, and Serena Burton in the last two seasons of The Waltons (1979-1981). Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch was nothing in comparison!
(Dis)Honorable mention goes to anyone added to The Wonder Years during the last two seasons (1991-1993, when Kevin and his friends entered high school). Oh, and who can forget Olivia on The Cosby Show or Lily on Step By Step?
Adding Col. Potter to MASH changed some of the dynamics of the show; Potter was more on the ball as a leader than Blake was, and became a father figure to the cast.
I don't think anybody has mentioned the addition of little Chrissy Seaver, who experienced the biggest growth spurt in Sitcom history - aging six years in just two seasons!
Amazing!
;)
*ShortCake* 12-02-2002, 08:57 PM Ugh I couldnt stand Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch.. ok for the longest time they dont mention any cousin and he just pops out of no where?? ARGHH..
and happy days.. ROGER .. KACEY... and I didnt really like how they switched Al's but they were both ok.. BUT Roger & Kacey annoyed the heck out of me!!

That's McGinely right? I don't like the man's acting, but I just love reading about him on jumptheshark.com. Those people can come up with some of the craziest things about him. lol
I agree about Oliver and Chrissy and have a few more:
Judy and Ace on the Love Boat
Frank Lorenzo on All in the Family (an unlikely show to have such a stereotyped character).
Paul Lynde's character in the second season of Tempartures Rising.
ThomasE 12-28-2002, 08:46 PM I don't know why everyone thinks that Oliver ruined The Brady Bunch. His acting was good and he was only on the last six episodes. I don't believe his addition was the reason the show was cancelled. Everyone was getting older anyway.

Murphy Brown
Coach (I'm told, never saw the last few baby seasons)
Friends
Sex and The City is on thin ice if they focus too much on Miranda's baby.
Six Feet Under got carried away with Nate's baby. I hope the kid's out of sight next season.
I don't dislike children. I just don't think there's a place for them in adult shows. If I wanted to watch kids, I'd watch family shows.
Everybody Loves Raymond does a good job at staying an adult sitcom despite having children.

LucyFan 06-23-2003, 12:30 AM These are my picks:
Howard Sprague on The Andy Griffith Show
Rhonda Lee on Laverne & Shirley.
Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch.
Flip (Roger's brother) on Happy Days
The "2nd" Lionel Jefferson on The Jeffersons
Ashley (Fonzie's steady girlfriend during later seasons) on Happy Days and her daughter.
mstewart 06-23-2003, 01:34 AM Monore - Too Close for Comfort. Too obnoxious and that voice was so nerve grating.
Janet Craig (June Lockhart) - Petticoat Junction. She did not fit and the show should had ended after Bea Benaderet's passing. Her death left a huge hole in the show.
Cousin Oliver - The Brady Bunch. I watched the episode last night when he joined the family and it was awful. The show was obviously on its way out.

ThomasE 01-08-2012, 02:10 AM Unfortunately, "Angie" from "Welcome Back, Kotter". I wanted the character to work but maybe it was the actress that didn't do the role justice. I really wanted this character to remain a sweathogg.
steevo 01-08-2012, 02:52 PM Michelle Stevens and James Beaumont- Dallas.
Cousin Oliver- The Brady Bunch.
Dr. Thong 01-08-2012, 03:08 PM Roger Philips, Flip, Eugene and Melvin Belvin, Bobby - Happy Days
April - Too Close For Comfort
Walton Schmidt - Two And A Half Men
ThomasE 01-09-2012, 01:57 AM "Seven Bundy" from "Married: With Children". While he was not the worst, he was simply unecessary.
"Stacy Morasco" from "One Life to Live". She was an evil character and I could not stand her. I didn't even love to hate her. Even when she was killed off, I didn't care very much along with other fans.
megamanj2004 01-11-2012, 02:25 AM Walden Schmitt - Two and a Half Men
The Cosby Show - Olivia, Cousin Pam, Martin
Partridge Family, The - Ricky
ThomasE 01-11-2012, 03:58 AM Walden Schmitt - Two and a Half Men

Vance and Coy - Dukes Of Hazzard
Sam - Different Strokes
Andy - Family Ties
Chrissy - Growing Pains
Crichton - Buck Rogers

UMFaninMD 01-17-2012, 07:08 PM ITA with Torgo on Buck Rogers' Crichton. Never so much have I wanted inflict harm on a robot.
Allison Sugarbaker - Designing Women
Do cartoons count? If so, Scrappy-Doo from the Scooby-Doo franchise.
UMfan77 01-28-2012, 05:13 PM That little boy on "Who's the Boss".
rezny717 01-29-2012, 02:58 PM That obnoxious little kid named Aaron,Michelle's classmate ,on the last season of "Full House".
Family Ties Forever! 01-31-2012, 05:59 AM Worst cast additions:
Nick - Family Ties
Luke - Growing Pains
scrapple 02-07-2012, 10:48 PM Deputy Warren from "Andy Griffith" OWNS this category.
J.Peterman from Seinfeld. I know a lot of people liked him, but not me. I wished they kept Elaine working for Mr. Pitt.
I could not STAND B.J. Hunnicutt from MASH. I know they were trying to go in a new direction from Trapper John, but Mike Farrell was the least funny character on any sitcom ever. I seriously cannot think of any time I ever laughed at anything he ever said or did.
Ronee from "Frasier". Wendie Malick can be great in certain roles, but as John Mahoneys love interest....um, no.
Helen Crump from TAGS. Andy had some fiery girl friends during his early days in Mayberry (Ellie the druggist, that HOT nurse whose name I forget, etc), so why did he end up with stick in the mud Helen?
D-Dey 02-12-2012, 10:53 PM "Seven Bundy" from "Married: With Children". While he was not the worst, he was simply unecessary.
Not only that, the way he became a member of the Bundy family sucks.
factsoflife 02-13-2012, 01:46 AM Gina Kincade on "Beverly Hills, 90210".. She was a replacement for Val played by Tiffani Amber Thiessen and was BORING. Vanessa Marcil played the role.
JimPeero 02-16-2012, 07:55 PM i dunno i liked same actually..
biffbronson 02-17-2012, 08:57 AM Orrin Pike -- Petticoat Junction (final season): Played by Jonathan Daly, the game warden and potential husband for Bobbie Jo generally has not gone over well with PJ fans.
Amanda Fuller and Jordan Masterson as Kristin (replacing the fired Alexandra Krosney (https://www.facebook.com/BringBackAlexandraKrosney?ref=ts&fref=ts)) and Ryan in Season 2 of Last Man Standing.
Worst cast additions:
Nick - Family Ties
Luke - Growing Pains
I kind of feel that Luke (Leonardo DiCaprio's character), that homeless kid that the Seavers took in, was added because Ben (Jeremy Miller) wasn't exactly growing up to be a Kirk Cameron type heartthrob (Ben w/ all due respect became quite gawky during his older years) and Kirk Cameron himself had become a holier than thou, self-righteous religious zealot (hence, why his character could no longer be a mischievous, underachiever).
Not only that, the way he became a member of the Bundy family sucks.
I never understood the purpose of adding Seven other than to make up for the pregnancy storyline from I think Season 7 that was dumped (and it was written off Dallas style as a bad dream of Al Bundy's) when Katey Sagal miscarried in real life. Adding a cute kid to the Bundy household was pretty much an anti-thesis of what Married...with Children stood for in the first place.
A similar thread that I just found:

If Cameron pulled any kind of trip on me and I was the show's producer, I'd remind him he's under contract and he will play the character as written by the show's writers and producers.
If he feels his character's not virtuous enough, he is free to leave at the end of his contract.

Dr. Thong 06-08-2013, 06:55 AM That's all you do, bird imitations?
I don't mind the B.J. character on M*A*S*H, but Trapper John was a much better sidekick and comedic foil for Hawkeye in the Swamp. B.J. also got really self-righteous and annoying at times as the show went on.
McGillicuddy 06-08-2013, 10:54 AM Alex - One Day at a Time

http://whatculture.com/tv/10-woeful-characters-who-ruined-awesome-tv-shows.php
Falling in love with a television show can be very much like entering a relationship with a single parent. Initially, you get to know the characters and how they behave. You learn their catchphrases and find that time together once a week -or if on Netflix for 8 straight hours- comforting and protective. Then, after time they introduce their bratty precocious child who ruins everything. You struggle to look past the little tyke, despite their sudden and obnoxious insistence of being the center of attention. You long to embrace what you once could not imagine being without. We have all had the television show where a woefully obnoxious character is introduced and while they remain on the screen you have an incredibly difficult time reconnecting with the thing you once loved.
To take a quick look at where the love went wrong, I have complied a list of ten characters that really killed the connection. Let’s take a look at 10 of some of the most woeful characters in television history.

tooltime1987 06-18-2013, 07:41 PM Home Improvement- The Twins Clare & Gracie in season 8 & Wilson's Niece in season 7.
Gemini_89 03-27-2016, 03:18 AM George Clooney from The Facts of Life. He was useless and he wasn't even that hot! Jo at her peak had more testosterone.
Gemini_89 03-27-2016, 03:29 AM George Clooney (Facts of Life). He sucked and added nothing to the show. Jo was more than man enough for the "male presence" that they wanted.
