At what age did Maria give birth to Freddie? Was there any reason given why he was an only child?

the age Maria was when she Had Freddie is not mentioned in the book but Maria did say that she and Karl only wanted one child so they could give him(she said she knew he was a boy)everything he would need.
I wonder if this decision also had anything to do with the fact that Karl had already had 39but one died)children from his prior marrige,or the fact that he did lose a child?
