My earliest barbershop memory, I must have been 4 or so, the barber picked up (and motioned with) an enormous plastic-case electric clippers, and seemed to threaten to use it on me. Intentionally scared me. Years later I realized it wasn't real, likely a salesman's sample. To this day I can still picture it, it was light blue, at least 16 inches in size.

Of what I remember barbers in the '60s they weren't particularly skilled in their craft. Seems like they gave everybody the same type of haircut. Short sides and the back, bit fuller on top. A step above having your mother give you a haircut, but not by much. Also, the dreaded summer crew cut that my father never told me about that he told the barber on the side. Then I'd have to wear a baseball cap for a month. The kids at our grade school gave the barber we went to the nickname of chop-chop. And his son used to work with him. And he was even more of a butcher.
