Here’s what I wrote on Facebook after seeeing Exorcist II for the first time. Post is dated August 14, 2023:

“The Exorcist” is one of my favorite movies of all time. I fell in love with it when I first saw it in theaters during a wide re-release of a new cut in 2000. I’ve seen it countless times since then and it’s always quite a ride.

But I’d never seen the sequels. Until now.

Over the past several nights, I’ve watched “Exorcist” sequels, starting with “The Exorcist III,” then “Dominion: A Prequel to The Exorcist.”

Last night I finally watched “Exorcist II: The Heretic,” which I’ve always known is notorious for being one of the worst movies ever made. And hoo boy, is it ever. It’s a colossal ****ing mess and I can’t believe the final script and the final cut of the movie were ever greenlit.

“Exorcist II” is a clear case of a major studio making a sequel to one of their beloved properties $olely for the $ake of making a $equel. There is no artistic merit in this movie, but there is a lot of audience confusion. Seriously, it was such an incoherent cluster**** start-to-finish that I don’t know where to begin… but I will say I laughed my ass off early on when they busted out the medical device that magically allows two or more hypnotized people to synchronize thoughts and dreams.

“The Exorcist” screenwriter (and author of the book on which the movie is based), William Peter Blatty, and director, William Friedkin, didn’t want anything to do with this turd. The producers were only able to persuade three of the principal actors from the original, including Linda Blair, to participate. Ellen Burstyn flatly refused, so an obviously hastily put together scenario was cobbled together in which Regan was staying with the mostly useless Sharon character from the first movie while her mom was on location filming a movie.

And the locusts! My god, the locusts!

I know Richard Burton was in a career downslump at the time the movie was made and was in the throes of life-threatening alcoholism, but it still seems like he’s only in “Exorcist II” because he lost a bet with Pazuzu, himself.

I imagine screenwriter William Goodhart’s thoughts when he pitched Burton’s Father Lamont character to studio executives: “Remember Father Karras from the original movie? You know, he was kind of intense and was having a crisis of faith? Well, let’s give our priest his own crisis of faith, but without the intensity. Oh, and let’s make him milquetoast and unlikable.”

And Louise Fletcher, who was just coming off her Oscar-winning turn in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” is TERRIBLE in this movie. Her acting is wooden and her line delivery is monotone. I don’t blame her, though; the material is just that bad and she probably didn’t know what to do with it.

I spent the last 70 minutes or so waiting for the movie to end. I almost started rooting for the demon.

But James Earl Jones is in it, so I guess that’s cool.

Gene Siskel gave “Exorcist II” zero out of four stars. It has a 10% Rotten Tomatoes rating, which I think is generous. I award it no points, and may God have mercy on its soul.

When I know in the future that a movie is universally derided, maybe I shouldn’t bother with it and instead trust the overwhelming consensus. Think of all the tinfoil I could’ve chewed with those two hours. It would’ve been a much better use of my time.

That having been said, the other sequel and the prequel weren’t good, either, but they don’t get anywhere near the depths of “Exorcist II’s” repugnancy. And “Exorcist III” does have its moments and a decent performance from George C. Scott, but meh.

“Exorcist II” made me feel bad for Satan. I mean, this movie wasn’t his idea and it portrayed him poorly. He should’ve sued Warner Bros. for defamation.

I wrote that a few months before The Exorcist: Believer came out, which I was optimistic about because it was made by the same team behind the 2018 Halloween and because Ellen Burstyn was back in the fold — but it was almost as bad as Exorcist II.
