Star Trek is in a strange, transitional state at the moment. While Starfleet Academy was rejected by much of the fan base earlier this year, Strange New Worlds Season 4 is off to an incredible start. Away from the saga's ever-vanishing small-screen efforts, Star Trek is gearing up to return to movie theaters. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves creative duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been tasked with adding to the space opera's mixed bag of feature-length projects. After months of silence surrounding what to expect from the upcoming Star Trek movie, the minds behind it have finally provided a compelling tease. It sounds...concerning, at least on paper.
Of all the Star Trek series out there, the currently unnamed movie has been teased to draw the most inspiration from the divisive Starfleet Academy. The 32nd-century story was slapped with the overused and dreaded "woke" label pretty much immediately. It failed to find much of an audience, but part of that was down to Paramount's lack of advertising. I actually quite enjoyed most of Starfleet Academy, although a couple of episodes were dull and meandering. Regardless of how underrated I find the series, I understand why Starfleet Academy Season 2 will bring an end to things sooner than planned. It also worries me that Daley and Goldstein seem so eager to borrow from Starfleet Academy's playbook.
