This early network promo contains no footage, no Alexander Courage theme, and not even a glimpse of the pilot. Instead, NBC relied entirely on dramatic pans and zooms across a promotional painting commissioned from legendary illustrator James Bama.
At this point, Bama's artwork was essentially the public face of 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙠. It also became the cover art for the first James Blish novelization, making it one of the most recognizable images associated with the series.
Note the final line: "...the first adult space adventure..."
NBC was drawing a clear distinction between 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙠 and that other space series, 𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚. Gene Roddenberry and the network wanted viewers to understand that this wasn't a kids' fantasy with comic-relief robots; it was intended as serious, adult science fiction.
