Or more specifically, people really only wanting to watch Columbo? I know that it sounds like an oversimplification towards what really happened (https://www.quora.com/What-was-the-wheel-format-used-by-NBC-and-why-did-it-eventually-fall-out-of-favor-with-viewers/answer/FeverIndex). But, to put things into perspective, did the wheel format (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_NBC_Mystery_Movie) ultimately prove to be very frustrating to viewers since they could only tune into Columbo once a month? Especially considering that television traditionally or typically relies on building habitual viewing. That obviously couldn't be done week to week because the core product completely changed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_series) every seven days. Like, one week you'll get Columbo, and then the very next week, you'll get McCloud, and then the week after that, you'll get McMillan & Wife, etc.
