View Full Version : Not sure why this show is listed as a spinoff of Happy Days

It was a crossover with Happy Days since the Pinky guest star as her Happy Days character. And the show came from the same creators of Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. No character from happy days was spinned off from HD and given their own show. And since the show had the same creators as HD and L&S, it was two crossovers. One in the opening episode and the other when Laverne appeared later in the season. Defintely not a spinoff

I thought it was because the character Nancy Walker played was on Happy Days the week before Blanskys Beauties first aired.

I’ve seen the Happy Days episode but it’s been so long I don’t remember exactly what happens in it.

Wikipedia:

Blansky's Beauties is an American sitcom television series and ostensible spin-off of Happy Days that aired on ABC from February 12 to June 27, 1977. The title character was played by Nancy Walker, introduced on an episode of Happy Days, then set in the early 1960s, then jumping to her life in Las Vegas in 1977 for this new series.

Was this why Nancy Walker left Rhoda, then returned a season later?

No she has 2 failed shows in the same season. She left rhoda for the nancy walker show in fall of 76 and it was cancelled in December. Then ABC gave her another show that started 2 months later in feb of 1977 and cancelled in may

Its a stretch to call this a spin off but technically it is. But the time difference with the shows was more than a 70's trip. Happy Days was set in the 1950s yet this show was current time. Then they had that trippy episode where Laverne from Laverne and Shirley goes in a time machine to go to the show.
Seriously folks that was nuts.

Don't worry after the series was cancelled Chachi came in the same time machine to the 1950s and Happy Days and he brought his 1977 hair cut!

You yourself said Howard's cousin appeared on Happy Days, then was given her own show.

That one I saw recently because a poster here had a copy of it and sent it to you if you asked. It was a flashback Nancy had about meeting Laverne. Laverne didn’t go to the future.

Ok thanks for reminding me. It was a flashback

But what about her meeting the Cunninghams in the 1950s on Happy Days that led to the spin off? Time machine?

Correct me if I am wrong but this was the lamest attempt at a spin off. Did they not bring her to Happy Days for an episode or two just to spin her off?

BTW, I was watching clips of it last night on youtube. The southern model from Arkansas was so overacting. Today it would be alleged she was making fun of people from the south. Many of the shows rejects like Richie's girlfriend Mary Beth came from this awful show. IMHO Happy Days would have been better without Chachi.

TVFactFan is going to have to buy the DVD and tell us if they tried to make her look younger (makeup, wigs, whatever) or they just didn’t care.

By the way, another connection between the two shows. Pat Morita was his Arnold character for all 13 BB episodes.

Ok just finished watching the 4th anniversary show and I was wrong and its definitely a spinoff

Nancy Blansky mentions she has to get back to vegas for show girls

Howard mentioned that Nancy is connnected to the Oasis Hotel in Vegas which is the hotel featured on Blansky Beauties

So Happy days has 4 spinoffs

L&S
M&M
BB
JLC

This thread did something really bad. It made me go to youtube and watch clips of episodes and the opening theme. Now I can't get that dumb theme out of my head. I have been walking around the house for the past 2 days singing "I want it all, I want it all." That's the only words I know and its not even that great of a theme song.
Was strange how the dancers would open the show different each time. The Arkansas girl was so over acting lol

I was reading something in the youtube comments that I thought was credible. This was another ABC attempt at jiggle TV. They already had Charlie's Angels and Threes Company debuted a month later after this show. Both were mid season replacements.
Guys would do anything back then to see a woman on TV in a bikini dancing or jumping up and down. ;)

This video explains some of the confusion with the time difference between shows and explains how the show failed. Laverne from L&S was brought in at the last minute in an episode trying to boost ratings. Blanskey traveled back in time to visit Laverne.
Weird

I think it made the show even more confusing. They made no mention when Ms Blanskey was in the 1950s on Happy Days saying she has to get back to Las Vegas with her girls and show. Yet for Laverne she goes back in time.
I am only guessing but when they showed women dancing they were professional dancers shown from far away. The key cast members were not professional dancers. That made things even more confusing. For example in the opening women are standing in front of Nancy near a water fountain. Slowing they all peal off revealing Nancy. Those women were not cast members but the professional dancers?
The show was trying to be too many things to too many people. Part jiggle TV, part teen idol (Chachi), part comedy, part dance show, and giving Nancy another try at her own show. It also was like the Facts of Life in season 1. Too many girls and it was hard to get to know any of them. These women would be in one scene, then leave and never be seen again the whole show.
But its such a train wreck and I love the mid 1970s so much that I wish it would be released on DVD.
