I think they were trying out potential wives for Danny, for the next season. Eventually they had a story arc at the end o the fourth season where Marjorie Lord took the role, which went on for seven more seasons.

This thread made me think of another of my favorite episodes, totally unrelated.

Some of the musical numbers aren't my cup of tea, but this one where Danny sings a song with Rusty at the end, around 23:30 is really fun. The episode itself is pretty funny, too.
