Blair and Tad: A Love Story
By Ryan T. Morris

I guess the first time I ever saw Tad Matthew Warner, was at a Christmas party of my mother’s. It was 1989, at first I really didn’t notice him, I had guys come up and talk to me all night. Nothing unusual. I went up to the bar to get something to drink and he was standing there.

“Hi, there,” he said.

“Hello,” I said.

“I’m Tad.”

“Nice to meet you, Tad. I’m Blair.”

“The pleasure is all mine,“ said Tad, he looked at me and said, “You look tired.”

“You don’t know the half of it,” I said.

“I’d like to.”

“I was up late night studying for a important corporate law test I had today.”

“How did you do?”

“I think I passed”

“So, what year of law school are you in?”

“This is my 3rd year. It‘s tough but I like the challenge. I want men to know that I‘m more that just a pretty face.”

“That’s good.”

“But, I’m telling you It’s not easy being a 3rd year law student and owner of a private school.”

“What school?”

“Eastland Academy”

“Ah, yes, I’ve heard of it. That’s up in Peekskill isn’t it?”

“Yeah. It’s a great school. It’s my alma matter.””

“So, how did you come about owning it?”

“Well, it fell into some financial troubles last year, and I couldn’t just let it close down and bulldozed down. I had to protect it.”

“And, how is it doing now?"

"Better. I got a new headmaster, new teachers, and enrolment is starting to pick up. I think it‘s going to be just fine”

“No wonder your so tired.”

“Yeah. There are times I wish I could sell it, so I can focus on law school.”

“You can’t find a buyer?”

“No, Every person whose come to me about buying it, it just interested in tearing it down and putting up a shopping mall.”

“That’s too bad,” he said.

“Yeah,” I said, “Well, I better be going. It’s been nice talking to you, Tad.”

“Same here,” he said.

Then, I walked away. He seamed like a nice guy. If he would have asked me I would have gone out with him. But, he didn’t. So I didn’t really think about him again, until about a month later…

Natalie had moved to Soho, Jo & Rick moved to Manhattan, and Tootie moved to London. So, I deiced that I needed to get out on my own. I found a very nice apartment, about halfway between Langley and Eastland. Anyway, it was about a month after I first met Tad, and I was making myself some dinner when, the phone rang, I walked over to the phone and answered it, “Hello?”

“Hi, Blair, this is Tad,” said the voice on the other end of the phone.

“Oh, Hi Tad. Um, how did you get my number?” I asked.

“Your mother gave it to me.”

“Oh, so what can I do for you, Tad?”

“Well, I think I found a couple whose interested in buying Eastland.”

“Excuse me?”

“You remember, you told me that you wanted to sell Eastland.”

“Vaguely.”

“Anyway, a short time after, the party, I was having dinner with a friend of mine and. And we were talking about where we all went to school, and my friend’s wife said she when to Eastland. And I mentioned you and the problems you were having. And they said they would like to talk to you about buying Eastland.”

“Okay.”

“How does this Friday afternoon sound?”

“Good.”

“Great. I’ll let them know and we’ll meet you at Eastland, say around 5.”

“Okay.”

“Alright. We’ll see you then.”

“Okay. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Then I hung up the phone. I couldn’t believe it. This man, who I only talked to for maybe five minutes, was helping me sell Eastland. I wondered, does he have an ulterior motive?

Well, Friday came and I went to Eastland. And we negotiated, in my opinion, a very fair price for Eastland. They paid me the same price I paid for it, plus enough to pay back my loan. We all went out to celebrate. It was about midnight when Tad’s friends said they had better start heading for home. We said good-bye to them then Tad offered to drive me back to my apartment. I said, “Okay.”

When we arrived at my apartment building, and he asked, “Can I walk you to your apartment?”

I thought for a second, and said, “Okay.”

We walked to my door and as I was unlocking it he said, “I had a nice time tonight.”

I turned back to him and smiled, “So, did I. I’d invite you in for coffee, but I don’t want to give you the wrong impression.”

“The wrong impression about what?”

“Well, if I invite you in for coffee it will just be for coffee. Nothing else.”

“OK.”

So we went inside…

We didn’t just have coffee, we talked all night long. We talked all night long about our lives, our friends, and our families. It was almost 4:00am when I dozed off to sleep. It was about 10:00am when I woke up on the couch, to the smell of coffee and bacon frying. I had a blanket placed over me. I still had my clothes on, but, Tad did take my shoes off. I got up and walked toward the kitchen.

“Good Morning,” said Tad.

“Morning. Where did you sleep last night?”

“On the love seat.”

“Oh. What are you making?”

“Pancakes and bacon. It’s almost ready.”

“I better change, bet I look like a mess.”

“You look fine.”

“You think so?”

Tad smiled and handed me a plate with some food on it, “Eat your breakfast.” I sat down and stared to eat. “How do you like it?” he asked.

“It’s great,” I said, “were did you learn to cook.”

“My mother taught me.”

We ate our breakfast and then Tad said, “We’ll I better be going.”

“Okay. We’ll it’s been nice talking to you. I had a great time.”

Tad smiled, “Me too.” We got up and I walked him to the door. As he was walking out of the door he turned and said, “I’d really like to see you, again.”

“How about next Friday?”

“It’s a date,” then he gently kissed me on the lips, “Until then, my angel.” Then he left.

I closed the door and leaned against it. That was my first kiss from Tad. And, I felt like I was floating I felt so good. I couldn’t wait until next Friday…

Friday came again, and I wanted to look perfect for him so after my last class I went to the salon. I got my hair done, plus a manicure and pedicure. Then I went and got a new dress and shoes. I was just finishing getting ready when I heard a knock on the front door. I started putting my earrings on as I opened it and said, “Hi, Tad.”

“Hi,” he said, then he gave me a kiss, “these are for you.” Then he handed me a dozen red roses.

“Oh, Tad. They’re beautiful. Let me put them in something,” I went in the kitchen and put them in a vase with some water. Then I walked back, “I just need to grab my purse and coat and I’m ready.”

“Okay,” said Tad.

I walked back to my bedroom and got my purse then I went to the closet and took my coat off the rack. Tad took my coat and said, “Allow me.” He held my coat open while I put it on, then we left. He took me to dinner and a movie. I had a great time.

The next day, I went to Manhattan to help Jo plan Jamie’s 1st birthday party. I reached Jo and Rick’s apartment and rang the bell. Jo came to the door, as she was in the process of burping Jamie, “Hey, Blair. Come on in, I was just giving Jamie her lunch and then I was going to put her down for her nap.”

I walked in to Jo and Rick’s apartment. It was very nice, I did offer my help in decorating it but Jo said no. I think she did a pretty good job. Rick was doing quite well as a musician, and was off on tour, Rick hated being away from Jo and Jamie, he loves both of them so much, but he told Jo that this was his last tour for at least a year, and he was coming home for Jamie’s birthday, February 14th.

I sat down at the kitchen table as Jo put Jamie down for her nap. A short time later, Jo came out.

“Sorry for the wait,” said Jo.

“That’s Okay,” I said.

“Can I get you anything to drink?”

“I’ll take some coffee.”

“Okay,” said Jo, as she went to pour me a cup, “Here you go.”

“Thanks,” I said as I took the cup, then I took a sip, “I’ve had some thoughts about the party…”

“Hold on a moment. This is going to be a simple party, Blair. A cake and a few presents. That’s it”

“Okay. If you say so. So are Tootie, Jeff, and Tisha coming?”

“Yep. They’ll be here. And I talked to Mrs. G and she and Bruce are going to come too.

“That’s good.”

Jo took a sip of coffee and said, “How are things go going with this Tad guy?”

I smiled and said, “Jo, he is the best.”

“Wait till Mrs. G finds out that he spend the night at your place on the first time you went out with him,” said Jo with a smile.

“Nothing happened,” I said.

“Sure, Blair,” Jo said with a smile, “Sure.”

I gave Jo a dirty look

“Anyway, why don‘t you bring him to the party. I‘d like to meet him.”

“Okay…”

So I asked Tad if he wanted to go to Jamie’s party with me. He said he’d love to meet my friends. Soon, Valentine’s Day rolled around, and we went to Jo & Rick’s. I rang the bell and Rick answered.

“Hi ya, Blair,” said Rick, “Good to see you.”

“Same here, Rick,” I said, “Tad, this is Jo’s husband, Rick.”

“Hi, Rick. Nice to meet you,” said Tad, as he held out his hand.

Rick shook his hand and said, “Same here. Well, come on in. Everyone else is here.”

We walked in, and there was everyone, Tootie and Jeff were sitting on the couch with Tootie, Jo was sitting in a chair, Mrs. Garrett and Bruce were sitting on the love seat, and Jamie and Tisha were on the floor playing, and Natalie was sitting in a chair, she had a smile on her face, but I knew she was hurting. She lost Snake a little over a month ago, on New Year’s Day. She told us that Snake was coming to see her and that he had a surprise for her. On the way down, a drunk driver crashed head on into Snake’s car. He was killed instantly. And, when they were going threw the clothes he was wearing, they found an engagement ring in a ring box.

I introduced everyone to Tad, and they seamed to like him very much. We sat talking for a little while then Jo brought out the gifts. Because Tisha was there too, Jo thought it would be a good idea if we each got Tisha a little something so she wouldn’t be trying to open up Jamie’s gifts. Soon, Jamie and Tisha were playing with their new toys and me and Jo went in to the kitchen to put the finishing touches on Jamie’s cake.

“So, what do you think of Tad,” I asked.

“He seems like a great guy. You sure got a winner there,” said Jo.

“Thanks,” I said, “Everyone really seams to like him.”

“Yeah.”

“Natalie, looks good. How’s she doing?”

“She’s OK. She comes over for dinner about once a week. After dinner, me and her talk.”

“About what?”

“Oh, everything. You know, she’s close to a job as a news writer with ABC News.”

“Yeah, I know. I talked to her last week about it, she seams excited about it.”

“And, I’m glad that Tootie is coming back to the states, even though she and Jeff are going to be in California.”

“Yeah. Um, Blair?”

“What is it, Jo?”

“I’ve been thinking about going back to work.”

“That’s great, Jo. I’m sure they can really use your help at the center.”
“No not the center. I’m, um, thinking about a career change.”

“Oh? What?”

“I’m thinking about becoming a cop.”

“A cop? You?”

Jo crosses her arms, “Don’t you think I’d make a good cop?”

“No, no, no. It’s just I’m a little surprised. I think you’ll be a great police officer.”

“Really?”

“Really. Have you to Rick about this?”

“Yeah. And he thinks it’s a good idea.”

“Well, I think it’s a good idea, too.”

Jo smiled, “Thanks, Blair.”

We finished decorating the cake, lit the candle and took it to the dinning room. Everyone sang, “Happy Birthday.” And Jo cut the cake and everyone ate. Well, Jamie and Tisha tried to eat but most of their cake ended up on their faces. We all laugh, I looked at the clock and realized what time was. Me and Tad said our good-byes and left.

“Did you have a good time, Tad?” I asked him as we got on the elevator.

“Yes, I did. Your friends are great people,” he said, “So, It’s Valentine’s Day. What should we do?”

“It doesn’t matter to me, just as long as I’m with you,” I said with a smile.

“I have an idea.”

“What?”

“We’ll stop at Burger King, and get us some food and take it back to my place and have a candlelight dinner.”

“Okay,” I said as I laughed.

And, that’s how we’ve spent every Valentine’s Day since…

Over the next few months, we continued to see each other. Soon, it was Christmas Eve again. We were sitting in on the couch in front of the fireplace of Tad’s family’s cabin in the Catskills. We had a blanket wrapped around up.

“Tad?” I said.

“Yes, angel?” said Tad.

“This year has been great.”

“It sure has.”

“This is the longest relationship I’ve had in a long time.”

“Me too.”

I looked up at him, “I love you.”

He looked down and gave me a kiss, “I love you, too. I have a present for you.”

I Smiled, “Let me have it.”

Tad got up, got down on the floor next to the couch, go on one knee, took a ring box out of his pocket, opened it and said, “Blair Nicole Warner, will you marry me?”

I put my hands over my mouth and tears started to form in my eyes, and I said, “Yes, Tad! Yes! A thousand times Yes!” Then Tad placed the ring on my finger and we kissed.

I after I graduated from law school, that summer, we were married, in a simple ceremony, we only had about 500 guests. As a wedding present, Tad’s parents gave us the family hotel business, and after our honeymoon in Europe we started to work on building the Warner Hotel empire.

Well, that’s our story. Tad and I are still very much in love, and as you know me and Tad have finally decided to have children. We bought a very nice home in Peekskill and plan on enrolling our children at Eastland. And, I’m going to try to be a stay at home mom. Oooh! Sorry about that one of the twins just kicked. Yes, that’s right, I’m expecting twins. Tad and I have each named one of them. The first one born is going to be Joanna Marie, I picked that name. The other is going to be Christina Eve, Tad picked that name. I guess he was influenced by the due date of the twins, Christmas Eve. It seems like quite a few the most important dates in our family’s history has taken place on Christmas Eve. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

THE END.
