John Oliver Lands Guest-Starring Role on "General Hospital"
by Denise Petski
June 28, 2026

"Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver has landed his long-sought role on daytime TV with a guest arc on "General Hospital".

On his March 8 episode, Oliver admitted he was “jealous” when sports analyst Stephen A. Smith was cast in a recurring role on "General Hospital".

He now has gotten his wish. Oliver will appear in a three-episode arc airing on July 2, 3 and 6.

Oliver broke the news of his casting on Sunday’s episode of "Last Week Tonight".

“To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you,” Oliver said on his March 8 show. “Write me a role, and I’ll be on your set so fast, it’ll make your head spin. I only have a few conditions: First, I don’t want to play myself, I want to be a character. And I want his name to be ridiculous.

Also, I want to do something juicy — like murder or slapping or being slapped or being someone’s long-lost something — and, ideally, I’d like a dramatic closeup of my face. But in return, trust me, I will give my all to this performance.

General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”

"GH" executive producer Frank Valenti said in a statement:

“When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second. He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny and genuinely kind to everyone on set.

He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths with in Port Charles.”

Laura Wright on Working with John Oliver on "General Hospital": "It Was Incredible"
by Marlow Stern
July 2, 2026

Laura Wright, the beloved Daytime Emmy-winning actress who’s played Carly Spencer (nee Corinthos) on “General Hospital” since 2005, acted opposite John Oliver’s mystery character in his upcoming episodes, and tells Variety that the two had a ball together, and while he took the job seriously, he also had her cracking up during rehearsals.

“We had no idea what to expect,” she says of Oliver’s turn on the series. “A lot of times people like to come on and make fun of what we do, and I’m not a big fan of that. Our job is as important as anyone else’s, and we don’t consider it a different type of acting or anything like that. So, I was so impressed with the writing that honored what he does well while also staying true to what we do, and how he showed up and delivered. It was incredible.”

Wright says she was surprised when Oliver told her he’d never taken acting classes before, since he made specific choices in their scenes that a trained actor would make.

“If he was nervous, you couldn’t tell,” Wright maintains. “He was perfect with his lines. We were in the middle of a very intense storyline that has been building for months, so it’s really funny that he stepped right in and didn’t miss a beat. You would think he’s been on the show!”
