In the late 1990s, UPN was supposed to become the next Fox — young, edgy, and different from the Big Four networks. Instead, it spent years struggling to find an identity. Was it the Star Trek network? A home for Black sitcoms like Moesha and The Parkers? A youth network? A discount Fox?

Then in 1999, during the peak of the Attitude Era, the World Wrestling Federation brought SmackDown! to UPN — and suddenly the struggling network had exactly what it needed: a loud, reliable, must-watch hit. With The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, The Undertaker, Mankind, Chyna, Vince McMahon, and the rest of the WWF roster, SmackDown! gave UPN a Thursday night identity it had never been able to create on its own.

This is the story of how WWF SmackDown! became one of UPN’s biggest hits, why wrestling was the perfect chaotic fit for a network in crisis, and how SmackDown! managed to outlive the very network that helped make it a broadcast TV staple.

Were you watching SmackDown! on UPN back in the day? Did you know what channel UPN was in your area? And were you more of a Raw fan or a SmackDown! fan?
