In the book I'm writing, Melting Away, automation is also taking over Oz. An inventor/engineer has created robots called Clank machines, and mechanical body parts that respond to thought, and is toying with the idea of being able to replace the parts of a human body that die off with mechanical parts in essence achieving immortality.

So it's the question: a finite life with one's humanity intact, or an infinite life losing one's humanity little by little until you're basically a robot yourself
