In the late 80s and early 90s, one toyline ruled them all: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Playmates Toys turned TMNT into a billion-dollar empire, with action figures flying off shelves faster than they could produce them. But that massive success came at a cost — and five other toylines paid the price.
This is the story of how Darkwing Duck, Toxic Crusaders, Skeleton Warriors, Earthworm Jim, and TaleSpin all ended up cancelled after just one wave of action figures. Every single one of these lines was made by Playmates Toys, and every single one was fighting for factory space, shelf space, and marketing attention against the Ninja Turtles machine. Most of them never stood a chance.
Darkwing Duck arrived in 1992 riding the massive popularity of the Disney Afternoon cartoon. The figures were well-designed and the show had a built-in audience — but Playmates had already committed their production lines to TMNT. Darkwing Duck got one wave and then disappeared, leaving collectors with an incomplete roster and cancelled Wave 2 prototypes that never reached stores.
Toxic Crusaders was Playmates' attempt to bring the ultra-gross aesthetic of the Toxic Avenger franchise into the kids' toy market. The action figures were some of the most creatively unhinged designs of the 90s, but the line was dead on arrival — retailers couldn't justify shelf space when Ninja Turtles figures were outselling everything else in the aisle.
Skeleton Warriors was arguably the most ambitious of the five. A fully original IP with a dark fantasy aesthetic, animated series, and some of the most detailed action figures Playmates had ever produced. But a toylines-only franchise with no existing fanbase couldn't compete with the Turtles' cultural dominance. Check out my deep dive on Skeleton Warriors here: • The Toyline Too Dark for the 90s | Skeleto...
Earthworm Jim should have been a guaranteed hit. The video game was a sensation, the cartoon was gaining traction, and the action figures captured Jim's bizarre charm perfectly. But Playmates spread themselves too thin — and Jim's toyline was another casualty. See the full Earthworm Jim story here: • These Earthworm Jim Toys Were NEVER Released
TaleSpin rounded out the Disney Afternoon double-death. Like Darkwing Duck, it had the backing of a beloved cartoon and recognizable characters — but it got the same single-wave treatment before Playmates pulled the plug to keep the Turtle factory running.
The real reason all five died? It wasn't bad toys or bad shows. It was a business decision. Playmates had limited factory capacity, and every production slot given to Darkwing Duck or Earthworm Jim was a slot taken away from Ninja Turtles. The Turtles were printing money — and Playmates wasn't about to slow down that machine for an unproven line.
Which of these five cancelled toylines do you think deserved a second wave? Let me know in the comments below!
