Contractions never happen in the modern era of the Big 5 North American Sports. MLS has had a few but that was during its infancy. MLB got close to folding two teams in 2001 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Major_League_Baseball_contraction_plan). The Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos were on death’s door. And if it weren't for some convenient bureaucratic stuff there's a good chance those two teams might’ve folded.
