Hip-hop star Rob Base passed away on Friday at age 59 following a battle with cancer, according to an announcement on the artist’s social media page.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the announcement said. “Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
Base, whose real name was Robert Ginyard, was part of an iconic Harlem hip-hop duo, along with DJ E-Z Rock.
They are best known for the 1988 single “It Takes Two,” a “hip-hop staple” that was a top 40 hit and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
The duo is remembered as being pioneers of the crossover success that rap music would have in popular mainstream music.
DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney “Skip” Bryce, died at 46 on April 27, 2014 after complications from diabetes.
