PicklesSorrell 11-22-2002, 06:11 AM Watching episode #1...
Is it just me, or does Dick Van Dyke look a little too heavily made up?! Even for black and white, you can tell the makeup department put WAAYYYY too much makeup on him...goodness!!!
But dont you just LOVE Lauras slacks and striped blouse?!:)
And the sets are different...all these years and I dont think I have ever noticed these differences! No wonder I never noticed that there were two different Pickles'....
Someone needs to slap me and tell me to pay attention! LOL

Yes, Dick was WAY over made-up. I've read in my Dick Van Dyke book that the reason for that was he was sweating bullets b/c he was SO nervous about the show and whether or not it would succeed. But you still have to wonder, didn't the make-up people know that he looked ridiculous like that?? LOL

Roz1013 11-22-2002, 02:37 PM Yeah, the make-up situation in the first episode is horrible. And is it just me or does MTM look *way* young in the first 3 or 4 episodes, and then all of a sudden look normal (as in looking like what she looks like throughout the rest of the series) in about the fifth episode or so? I don't know if they did her make-up or hair differently or what, but she just looks so different in the first few eps IMO.
Sitcom Sally 11-22-2002, 05:10 PM Yes! I'm so glad they tweaked the makeup later on... that first episode, well it looked like Dick was wearing false eyelashes, for heaven's sake! Roz, MTM's eyebrows were arched completely different than they would be later; maybe that's what made her look much younger. Also, you can see by the Rob/Laura interaction that they became much more comfortable with each other over time; Rob's affectionate parts here are almost, well, cloying. I always like watching that first show, it's an indication of the great things to come as everyone grew into their roles.
MTM1Fan 11-22-2002, 10:12 PM DVD also had to have the make up caked on because he had some fever blisters around his mouth.

Okay, I can buy that in excuse for the heavy pancake makeup and lipstick, but, what about the heavy rouge, eyebrow pencil and eyelashes??
Well, all that aside, I thought this was an incredibly *sweet* episode. I know that, as the eps wore on, Rob and Laura weren't so "sweet" and that was a realistic potrayal of married couples when the newness wear off, but I wished they could have retained that sweetness. And why didnt we ever see these neighbors again?

I just noticed MTM's eyebrows and different appearance in ep #2...notice that the arch isnt all that different - the eyebrows are *thicker*. And the other thing I noticed? Her teeth. These first eps they look a little "spaced", out of shape and duller. In later ep's, they look to have been bonded, whitened and filed. And I may start a riot, but I *think* she may have had a nose job. What do you all think?

I don't think she had a nose job. You know what I think it may be? I think she lost weight. She was never fat or anything but in the first episode she had a slightly rounder stomach and face.
Roz1013 11-24-2002, 12:26 AM I think you are right about the eyebrow thing, I think that does make her look younger. And MTM said in her autobiography that people always think she's had a nose job, but she never did. When she was a baby supposedly her mom thought she didn't have a nose so she would always pinch it up all the time, so she said in that respect she did have 'an early nose job', lol. However, in recent years she has had a bit of plastic surgery.

Well, I was looking at it and it looked like a babys nose, you know, little and round...but, Roz, when I compare it to the photo of MTM you have in your profile photo, it looks so drastically different...maybe her face grew into her nose LOL I mean, when my daughter was born, she had these huge ears. The doctor said as her head and face grew, her ears wouldnt look so "predominant" and he was right...everythings sort of evened out, now. So maybe this is what happenedwith MTM's nose...she was so young when she started that she hadnt quite physically matured (facially lol), maybe? She had such a baby face...but you can definately tell that her nose is different in these first few eps, especially when compared to her role as Mary Richards. Theres a drastic difference. But maybe it was just the growing-in-to-it thing, like my daughter.:)

Sitcom Sally 11-26-2002, 09:02 PM I don't think she had a nose job. However I can remember reading tabloids saying MTM had plastic surgery that date back to the late '60s. Supposedly she started having nips and tucks when she was still in her 30s... Take that for what it's worth. But I can believe she'd already had "work" done by the time the MTM show debuted. She has always been attractive, but by then her skin had retained a tightness that was a tell tale sign of plastic surgery techniques of that time.
MTM1Fan 11-26-2002, 09:56 PM I read her auotbio and in it, there was no mention of plastic surgery until the 80's. She could have lied, but she was brutally honest about everything else so I don't see why she would have to lie about that.
