View Full Version : Has the Smart Phone KILLED our attention spans?
TheLittleFaerie 04-22-2026, 05:32 AM I love to write, stories, poems, etc. I try to present them on paces like FB or here for feedback, almost always get ZERO responses :( Same for if I have a topic I wanna discuss that's longer than 3 or 4 sentences.
This did not used to be the case, people would engage, discuss, critique, comment, give feedback, etc...
I've researched it and I'm not the ONLY one noticing it, many sources say it's Smart Phone usage, we're SO USED to SPLIT SECOND engagement, super quick CLICK, SWIP, SCROLL, etc... and anything that takes longer than a few seconds to read we scroll right over.
I try so hard to keep my posts CONDENSED so hopefully it gets engagement, but dammit it gets so annoying when you're trying to get folks to engage in anything CREATIVE these days!
stevea 04-22-2026, 09:10 AM In many cases, mobile devices have killed conversation. Project what you see in restaurants, onto dining room tables. People absorbed in their devices, rather than conversing.
Also, communicating via text rather than talking can lead to misunderstandings. Suppose you're arguing with someone via text, and you text, "sorry, I was wrong." The other person was typing and misses it.
In a conversation, in person or phone, you can hear inflections and sense things by tone. If you missed an apology, the other person is bound to say, "I said i was sorry!" None of this would happen by text.
We lose.

YES!!! Going out to eat used to be a TREAT, but ppl walk in the restaurant, through the door, to their table NEVER taking their eyes off their phone, paying NO attention at all to their surroundings! Ugh! Then when they sit down at the table, phones instantly come out, and a family of 4 are glues to their phones instead having good "dinner table conversation". When I'm out, I've tried to make it a point to stay OFF the phone while dining or anything. I sound old but I think it's killing our society in a way

I think they're ruining our society. For me nowdays, internet is for HOME when I'm lounging around, not public, unless I just NEED to be on it really quick
